Are you wiping down groceries because of the new variant?

I am. Are you?

I have a shitload on my plate at the moment so haven't started digging through articles recommending it or saying it's all nonsense to do so, but with the 70% more infectious strain we are doing it. Wondered if anyone had seen anything related to the new strain and what new precautions we could take?

Laughing I agree, the packer or driver could sneeze on something...

I did wash everything esp milk.
I will go back to rinsing... It's a hassle but it's worth it for my peace of mind.

notalwaysalondoner · 11/01/2021 17:48

Nope, never did. Life's too short.

I do think supermarkets need to enforce hand sanitiser much more aggressively - Morrisons is banning people without masks but I'm always shocked how using the sanitiser on entry is optional, no one tells you to do it. I would have thought mucky hands touching stuff is just as much of a risk as a few people not wearing masks and I'm pretty sure 95%+ of people don't wipe down groceries, a much easier approach is to get everyone to sanitise before they touch everything.

atomt · 11/01/2021 17:49

I've never done. From what I've read, surface transmission risk is miniscule especially after some time has passed (some people will tell you the virus survives on surfaces for 72 hours but that's only in very controlled lab conditions and survives enough to be detected).

I always wash my hands after taking in post and parcels and putting away my supermarket shop (I shop online for delivery).

Waxonwaxoff0 · 11/01/2021 17:50

No. And I never will.

Calmandmeasured1 · 11/01/2021 17:50

No, but as you are CEV, I don't think it is overkill to do so, especially as we don't know much about it other than it is much more transmissable.

2bazookas · 11/01/2021 17:53

No. I put it all away into fridge or cupboards then thoroughly wash my hands.

I also thoroughly wash my hands before and after handling food to cook/ make meals. Nothing to do with covid., just normal kitchen hygeine.

GreenUp · 11/01/2021 17:54

I've been wiping down all cold and frozen items since March. I put dry items in storage for a 3-5 days. There are very vulnerable people in the household so I'd do anything to minimise the risk.

If I lived alone I might just do the "wash my hands after use" but other people in my family can't be trusted to remember to do this every time so they might use an item and then spread the virus round the kitchen.

If I wash the stuff down then it is safe for everyone to touch regardless of whether they wash their hands or not.

airbags · 11/01/2021 17:55

Yes, haven't stopped since March.

Bit of kitchen roll to wipe the bottom of milk, that's about it.

higglepiggley · 11/01/2021 18:02

No. I never have either

From Sparklingbrook’s link

Food shopping advice

When you go food shopping, you should wash your hands before you leave the house, avoid touching your face when you’re out and follow social distancing.

When you come home, you should wash your hands straight away. Wash them again once you have unpacked and put away your shopping.

It is not necessary to sanitise the outside of food packaging. While there is some evidence that the virus can survive on hard surfaces, the risk from handling food packing is very low and there is no evidence that the illness can be transmitted in this way.

If you are sanitising surfaces or shopping bags, follow the manufacturer’s instructions about how much time is needed before wiping the sanitiser off.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 11/01/2021 18:04

No, not something I've ever done

1forAll74 · 11/01/2021 18:05

No, never wiped groceries down, never bought hand sanitiser either. I might rinse down some fruits before eating, but have always done that anyway.

EmmanuelleMakro · 11/01/2021 18:05

I expect this thread to be full of people saying you’re neurotic
You are totally neurotic! Is this really a thing? I assumed it was some sort of urban myth!
Bonkers

CandyLeBonBon · 11/01/2021 18:06

Nope. And I say they as someone who works picking online shopping in a supermarket 4 days a week! Literally no point me doing that! Grin

IfTheSockFits · 11/01/2021 18:06

No. Never have.

ChairinSage · 11/01/2021 18:07

No. I don't eat the packaging. I wash my hands when I prepare food and before I eat.

WankPuffins · 11/01/2021 18:09

I've just wiped down my cans of cider. Because people in the shop are always picking them up and putting them down.

(Classy).

Roselilly36 · 11/01/2021 18:09

We haven’t stopped wiping down, but I do have a chronic illness.

S111n20 · 11/01/2021 18:09

No I’m not.

wizzbangfizz · 11/01/2021 18:09

Never have never will

LyndaSnellsSniff · 11/01/2021 18:10

We did in Lockdown #1 and also quarantined non-perishables for a few days, but stopped and I haven’t started again. Yet!

Ugzbugz · 11/01/2021 18:12

I did at the very beginning then stopped and not about to restart but can see peoples points on it.

Upupupintheair · 11/01/2021 18:12

As an ex supermarket picker - you should wash your shopping down if you get it delivered..
