Could chip and pin machines, self service tills and cash points be super spreaders?

Seems logical to me? Think of how many different pairs of hands are using these keypads! Unless they are sanitised between uses (difficult...but at tills i feel a spritz with sanitiser after each customer is reasonably do-able). I always use gallons of hand sanitiser after using, but I bet a lot if people don't bother. Maybe the contactless limit of £45 should be raised for the short term to say £100 or removed completely? I know it's there to protect if your card is stolen but a thief could do 2 £45 contactless transactions as easy as 1 £100 one 🤷‍♀️. I just wonder if we weren't all using these keypads it might help a bit??

Hmm
Haffiana · 10/01/2021 11:24

Why don't you google 'how is coronavirus transmitted?'

It will be a revelation, I suspect.

RaspberryCoulis · 10/01/2021 11:25

No.

Face to face contact with an infected person.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 10/01/2021 11:27

Sanitise before using to protect others, sanitise after to protect yourself, don't touch your face/eyes.

There's are So many other surfaces lots of people come in contact with - petrol pumps, shop door handles etc -all those things can't be removed, we just have to find practical and safe solutions. Not really a risk if you take the appropriate precautions

Fudgecakes · 10/01/2021 11:28

So why are there trolley sanitising stations in every supermarket if there isn't a risk of picking it up from surfaces? In that case why is everybody bothering to sanitise their trolleys? Isn't it because it's touching ashamed surface ie trolley handle....how us thekeypad any different?

Fudgecakes · 10/01/2021 11:29

Ashamed = a shared

Wash your hands op. Dont touch your face. Job done.

Seriously, it's not absorbed through your skin.

We are all still washing our hands arent we?

schmockdown · 10/01/2021 11:30

Apple Pay has no limit

megletthesecond · 10/01/2021 11:30

Surely they aren't touching them with their fingers? I try and use a sleeve, glove or tissue.
Same goes for the sanitiser dispensers, I use my elbow to touch those things.

BlueBaubles12 · 10/01/2021 11:31

Only if everyone is licking their fingers after using the self-service till, which I’m assuming most people don’t. I also understood that it’s generally accepted that transmission from surfaces is negligible. I’ve been using supermarket pin pads since the start and no issues here.

Fudgecakes · 10/01/2021 11:32

Yes...loads of shared surfaces...I know this is predominantly an airborne disease but if there is the slight risk, albeit small, we should maybe think of a blob of hand gel after using surfaces lots of people might have touched

OP posts:
Karmatime · 10/01/2021 11:38

It’s possible but most scientists are saying it’s not a major cause. Thing is it’s so easy to mitigate, just sanitise and then wash your hands before you touch your face.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 10/01/2021 11:41

Haven't we been doing this since last March? I believe there is a risk from things like keypads and petrol pumps etc but believe that risk is tiny, as you would need to then lick your fingers or rub your eyes. I keep sanitiser in my bag and in the car for these situations. It's not new OP

britnay · 10/01/2021 12:00

I don't know about other places, but where I work the work surfaces, pay points, till area, chairs, door handles and hand sanitizer pumps are all sanitized several times a day.

Fudgecakes · 10/01/2021 12:07

Although the general vibe im getting us this is old news, I'm sanitising etc... I'm sure a lot if people don't bother....I've witnessed it myself. I know you can't remove every commonly touched surface and a lot is down to personal responsibility to practice good hygiene, but going completely contactless at tills might help as thousands of these keypads are being used by multiple on a daily basis....I bet there have been some infections through their use.. bound to have been 🤷‍♀️

@ @britnay......that's refreshing to hear!

Yes, you probably can contract if someone has, eg touched their mouth and then the pin pad (or, like I have seen, hold the card in their mouth....), but it's fairly easy to use it and then use hand sanitiser or wash your hands afterwards.

toucancancan · 10/01/2021 12:17

You could use your car key or house key to type in the pin codeSmile

TheYearOfSmallThings · 10/01/2021 12:18

It's a perfectly reasonable question OP, and I'm sure there is some transmission via these surfaces. However it doesn't seem to be a main cause, so the advice to staff about sanitizing surfaces and advice to users about hand hygiene and not touching the face is considered to be adequate.

Doyoumind · 10/01/2021 12:21

I don't know where you are shopping OP but everywhere I go they regularly clean down self service checkouts. And there's little need to use ATMs when we're supposedly to be paying contactless as much as possible. Just keep your hands clean.

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 10/01/2021 12:22

I don't think fomite transmission has been ruled out.

That's why handwashing is important.

So when you have to touch something touched by many people (like the button at a pedestrian crossing) don't touch your face until you have had a chance to wash or gel your hands.

itsgettingweird · 10/01/2021 12:48

Shouldn't be because the messaging about sanitising hands has been clear.

Any touch point is a potential vector for spread but this is predominantly an airborne virus.

Kazzyhoward · 10/01/2021 12:50

Exactly. I use contactless where possible. I also wear disposable gloves to open shop doors, touch handles, touch the petrol pumps, etc. Everyone could do the same if they wanted to, to minimise their risks.
shinynewapple2021 · 10/01/2021 13:03

Agree with you OP. I always use hand sanitizer after touching but I imagine a lot of people wouldn't. All those on here who think that Covid can't possibly be transmitted this way for a start!
