Sorry I’m not sure how to link this but it’s on BBC news.

No one gave two hoots about the north

I don't think anyone cares hugely about anything except their own areas at the moment.

You would hope the government would though!
IrishMamaMia · 11/01/2021 08:06

Whitty said he thought risk of nurseries low and not worth closing on BBC breakfast. I just saw it on the BBC news site. That's promising at least.

TrashedWarrior · 11/01/2021 08:06

Nursery staff are heroes and apparently magically immune to the virus.

Tianatiers · 11/01/2021 08:07

Smaller bubbles in nurseries is definitely worth exploring although I know that my DCs nursery just has one playroom so I'm not sure how that would work.

Same4Walls · 11/01/2021 08:08

I dont think anyone is saying they are immune and of course they are appreciated but the truth is some services do need to stay open and nurseries are one of those services.
IrishMamaMia · 11/01/2021 08:10

@Lockdownbear thank you, that's exactly what I worry about in terms of effects. I think 3 months, pre-schooler will be fine but with school rapidly approaching another 3 months at home would be damaging. As you say, there has been very little for these age groups.
I thought it was worth it to get things under control last time but now it just isn't fair.

TheKeatingFive · 11/01/2021 08:12

Employing a nanny is extremely costly and totally out of budget for most. Don’t forget employers are responsible for NI/sick pay/maternity cover if it comes up.

It would be very helpful if the government put some guidance in place for how people can be temporarily engaged for childcare in more informal arrangements, but guess what? They won’t do this.

Tianatiers · 11/01/2021 08:15

There is another solution, vaccinate early years workers, right now?

IrishMamaMia · 11/01/2021 08:18

@Tianatiers I really agree that they should be vaccinated. I've read in the press about jabs left over at the end of the day, I think there should be a portal where nursery and education staff get to access these.

TheKeatingFive · 11/01/2021 08:18

Above people who are much more likely to die / be hospitalised by the virus?

I think that’s pretty selfish tbh.

When we start vaccinating the young and healthy, yes they should be prioritised.

Let’s get some perspective, for those under 45, no health conditions, flu is more dangerous. Did anyone insist all nursery workers get the flu jab before all this?

@IrishMamaMia you've just made me so happy 😅

MarshaBradyo · 11/01/2021 08:30

Me too. Whitty is brilliant I just heard the end of R4 interview. Wish I hadn’t missed him saying that.

CocoPark · 11/01/2021 08:36

Marsha I thought I was going to finally lose it with the headlines and chatter on MN this morning. That little snippet is going to get me through the morning!

IrishMamaMia · 11/01/2021 08:49

It's great news especially as it sounded measured rather than based on popular opinion. I also liked what he said in an earlier question about having a semblance of life as normal, and that's what it gives me.
If he seems it unsafe when we get further data I will be more willing to accept closures.

CocoPark · 11/01/2021 08:53

Yes exactly. I'll never be in favour, truthfully, but I can get my head around something that's clearly explained and data-backed. It's the demand for more disruption, based on absolutely nothing, that's doing my head in recently.

Hardbackwriter · 11/01/2021 08:56

Have just seen Owen Jones saying on twitter that he's debating Ann Widdecombe on Jeremy Vine on whether nurseries should shut... Hmm Obviously it would have been nice if they'd found anyone with any scientific expertise rather than two loudmouths from different ends of the spectrum, but if they were going for rent a gob was it so much to ask that they find someone who has ever cared for nursery-age children?!

CocoPark · 11/01/2021 08:58

@Hardbackwriter how annoying. I'm sorry but I really don't care to hear from people with absolutely no skin in the game.

MarshaBradyo · 11/01/2021 08:58

Yes Starmer was incredibly woolly. As a barrister he knows about importance of language but when it comes to science he seems to have let that leave the building.

Whitty finished interview in R4 by saying I’m a Dr, I’m trained to say how it is. Great he’s said what he has, far more weight.

Couchbettato · 11/01/2021 08:58

I'm surprised Kier Starker, the head of Labour (you know, the party for the working class) wants nurseries closed.

What, pray tell, are his recommended government assistances for working parents who will have to take unpaid time off, or risk losing their jobs if they cannot work due to having children around? Because we all know employers don't have to furlough.

Mine for example could have furloughed me on childcare grounds but as a company decided that it was only fair to every one if no one was furloughed.

I am a Labour voter but I just can't wrap my noggin around his half baked ideas. It's easy for him to say what he damn well likes because he's not dealing with the consequences.

MarshaBradyo · 11/01/2021 09:00

Me too Coco second time the wagons have circled on nursery closure for me, tense making

TheKeatingFive · 11/01/2021 09:05

but if they were going for rent a gob was it so much to ask that they find someone who has ever cared for nursery-age children?!

I fucking know right?

It’s ludicrous.

Par for the course when it comes to discussions on most thing that affect (or mostly affect) women and their rights.

WouldBeGood · 11/01/2021 09:18

Starmer really is a wet weekend.

I’m disappointed
