Sorry I’m not sure how to link this but it’s on BBC news.

So a playpen isn't a solution that works for you

Unless you’re advocating leaving babies in one for hours, it’s not much use to anyone. No one can fit their days work into the 15 minutes a baby will stay in a playpen for.

Tanith · 10/01/2021 21:24

@MarshaBradyo

I’m afraid a playpen isn’t a childcare solution for people who do ft hours.

It’s a quick fix where noise doesn’t matter.

So much wfh isn’t doing in your leisurely time. It’s 14 people paying and expecting you to show up and be present. It may have been acceptable in first couple if months but not nearly a year on.

I didn't say it was. It is, however, a solution for parents who feel so desperate, they're reduced to strapping their children into chairs.
User5437 · 10/01/2021 21:24

I was shoved in a playpen, well I guess I was as my younger DB was when we were young as DM spent ages washing in the copper and mangling clothes and doing other household chores and didn't want us under her feet, this was very common then, early 60s

Lifeinaonesie · 10/01/2021 21:25

Playpen is a ridiculous 'solution'. I work 10 hours a day. Most of that is now spent either on constant zoom calls or needing to get my head into complex documents. What on earth do you think people do when they WFH? Do you think we are all lounging around watching Netflix? Confused

User5437 · 10/01/2021 21:26

Obviously it didn't matter if we made a noise but it wasn't seen as cruel it was what people did

GoldenOmber · 10/01/2021 21:27

Mine will climb out of a playpen. I suppose I could rig up some sort of netting over the top and blast white noise loud enough that I can't hear the yelling from the other room, but at that point we're beyond 'WFH top tips' and into '80s Romanian orphanage top tips'.

InterfectoremVulpes · 10/01/2021 21:30

Tanith are you a childminder?

Tanith · 10/01/2021 21:32

This is getting ridiculous! Use a playpen; don't use a playpen. It's entirely up to you. They exist. There's a market for them. People do use them.

Tanith · 10/01/2021 21:32

@InterfectoremVulpes

Yes, I am a childminder.

But not for 8-10 hours a day!

Yes, and most parents of young children know they exist. They just aren't a solution for how to work all day with a small child in the home. Maybe they're useful for the rare MNer whose hours are 25 minutes per day?
IrishMamaMia · 10/01/2021 21:35

I don't think I can stick both of mine in a playpen without having to ring emergency services due to pre-schooler attacking baby, oh wait, that would make me a selfish arsehole contributing to the strain on our NHS.

GoldenOmber · 10/01/2021 21:38

And I like playpens! We still have one in the loft, it was very useful when mine were babies and I could plonk them in it while cooking dinner or doing something else I didn't want them getting into. They're fine. They're just not a great solution for leaving your child in a room by themselves for hours at a time, because nothing is.

TheKeatingFive · 10/01/2021 21:38

Grin

Yeah

As I've already said, I suggested a playpen as a solution for a mother who was strapping her child into chair, I believe for one or two hours.

Personally, I think a playpen is preferable.

TheKeatingFive · 10/01/2021 21:51

Personally, I think a playpen is preferable.

If they’ll stay in it. Which I expect hers wouldn’t, hence the strapping.

Remmy123 · 10/01/2021 21:53

A 2 year old in a play pen ? All day ?

Get a hold of your self people if I said a year ago 'AIBU to leave my baby/toddler in a playpen for 4-5 hours'. Wouid you all tell me that is ok??? Or wouid I get flamed?

InterfectoremVulpes · 10/01/2021 21:57

Yes, I am a childminder.

A childminder advocating leaving toddlers in a playpen on their own 😬

Carryingon · 10/01/2021 22:02

An 18 month old drowned while his poor worked from home. What on earth do people expect working parents to do??)

Remmy123 · 10/01/2021 22:05

Anyway Keir Starker clearly has no idea what the consequences of this will do so he can do one.

Carryingon · 10/01/2021 22:05

My dc are older but I currently have to interrupt my working day to get them logged onto zoom calls/lunch/outside for exercise 6 times a day. I don’t actually supervise or help them with their work and that is already massively hard with work calls/production.
And that is for a job which can in theory be done from home. I despair for women with even younger children.

SinkGirl · 10/01/2021 22:12

I have a video somewhere of my twins - both autistic, limited understanding but good problem solving skills - working together to open the playpen when their were about 20
months. Each stood on one side and rocked the sides back and forth until the gate popped open.

Then piling the toys in there in a corner to climb out.

Then using upper body strength to just lift themselves up and pivot out, sticking the landing BTW.

Would not recommend leaving toddlers unattended in a playpen!

Rosebel · 10/01/2021 22:41

And what if you work outside the home? Just leave them in a play pen for 8 hours with no adult home? Not serious obviously.

Xenia · 10/01/2021 23:07

In the 1960s my mother and many others were very against playpens. We never had one as children.

Tanith · 10/01/2021 23:13

"A childminder advocating leaving toddlers in a playpen on their own 😬"

Go back and read what I said. Properly.
