How is 'organised sport' still allowed to go ahead

Hundreds of sports men/women and associated colleagues are mixing today

just watching the Newcastle v Gloucester game. Obviously no masks, they are close together, as is the game of Rugby. Medics wearing masks but inches from players, referees up close talking. someone has to clean the changing areas after them and drive them to and fro

I'm actually disgusted .... and i'm sure it all came to a halt back in March. They all travel the country, one end to the other then go home to their families. I can't get my head round it, how is this in any way safe? do their kids go to school?

OP posts:
BridgertonBride · 09/01/2021 21:24

fully agree!

GreyTS · 09/01/2021 21:27

@MotheringShites

God forbid anyone should have any tiny bit of joy or pleasure in their miserable, imprisoned lives.

I swear some of you will not be happy until we’re all locked in a box.

This!! What the hell is wrong with people, so you don't enjoy football so you don't want anyone else enjoying it....and patriarchy? Who says football is a man's sport, I've been playing and watching soccer since I was 6, it's the love of life actually 😂
yankeedoodledandee · 09/01/2021 21:40

It's actually awful that anyone would be supportive of job losses. It's not just the players in the high wages who would be out of a job. Given the surge in mental health problems connected to covid it's actually sickening that so many people actively post that people should not be working. Ok, you don't like football. It's not just football though and you don't have to like it. You don't have to wish bad on the people involved either. People have lost their houses, struggled to feed their kids, and here you all are bitching about jobs being kept open. That's something we should all be supporting.

BridgertonBride · 09/01/2021 21:58

i dont think the op was even about football!

yankeedoodledandee · 09/01/2021 22:00

No, it was Rugby. Many many comments about football since though.

Madcatgirl · 09/01/2021 22:08

I’m very glad the rugby is still on. Granted some weekends make me want to kick the wall, but it’s a weekly glimmer of hope. I miss playing and coaching it, but at least I can watch it.

RugbyWAG · 09/01/2021 22:08

@yankeedoodledandee couldn’t agree more.

Professional sport generates a huge amount of money for the economy and employ many people. It also feeds in to many other industries - television and entertainment, hospitality, logistics, construction, transport and travel, healthcare, even tourism...

The big bucks contracts (in professional rugby anyway) are held by a select few, and in the main players are paid respectable but not outrageous salaries, comparable with other mid-level professions, and at the bottom end - pennies!

They contribute massively (or should anyway) to their local communities, particularly at youth level, and facilities are often used by many others too. Perhaps not at the moment, but if clubs go under, all that will be gone for the future.

Think what you like about a given professional sport personally, but it is of huge importance to many, and cancelling it has much further reaching consequences than just setting a good example. They’re doing their best.

BridgertonBride · 10/01/2021 10:08

Meanwhile it seems you can’t even sit on a bench! And really, it’s about money? Tell that to the people who have lost their businesses.

peak2021 · 10/01/2021 10:15

Two clubs were unable to field their first team this weekend, several games postponed, others with players missing. Unlikely to reduce in the immediate future. So in addition to the health reasons, there is also a sporting reason as it is not normal competition.

I still have the view it is time to call a halt for a while.

Cismyfatarse · 10/01/2021 10:16

On the news last night was a whole team indoors, singing an Adele song.

All indoor singing is banned, even in schools. Yet celebrating a win in football gets you congratulations on the 10pm BBCnews.

There's two live matches in BBC1 today. Awesome! Grin

Whole team tested. Whole school not.

There is a difference, event of people don't want to see it.

Cismyfatarse · 10/01/2021 10:23

But singing indoors. Not essential. Not part of elite sport.

And not really showing any awareness of the restrictions for the rest of us.

Either you can sing indoors. Or you can't.

TheDrsDocMartens · 10/01/2021 10:26

Some of the FA cup matches today include part timers who all have other jobs too.

BridgertonBride · 10/01/2021 10:27

All the cameramen and associated staff tested so much too??

EmmaWithTheGreatHair · 10/01/2021 10:40

I can understand the reasoning behind Elite sport being their job etc and they should be allowed to carry on, but showing the celebrations in the changing room on the main news certainly made me think wtf!

Lots of people need to work, lots of people also need testing regularly as part of their job but they can’t then go and celebrate, hugging etc with their team at the end of their shift! Can you imagine!

BridgertonBride · 10/01/2021 10:44

It’s not elite sport when it’s Halifax town playing. All the lower leagues are playing still including national league, some don’t get paid so it’s just like regular footie down the Rec/park..... that’s not ‘elite’

yankeedoodledandee · 10/01/2021 10:46

@TheDrsDocMartens

And some of them include minimum wage staff hanging on to an already very frayed rope.

Lower league football is nothing like just playing down the park. It is responsible for many jobs too.

BridgertonBride · 10/01/2021 10:49

Yeah I know what it is. I know exactly what it is.

And we wonder why it’s spreading like it is ££££

Well, their managers are coming out and saying the poor players just can't control themselves.

"Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola voiced similar concerns, saying: "When one guy scores a goal, I don't know if they can be controlled and not celebrate it.

"The joy to celebrate it, I don't know if [a player] is going to think: 'I cannot hug my mate for two, three seconds'."

Cismyfatarse · 11/01/2021 18:03

And the absolutely vital training in Dubai for Celtic has now resulted in a player with COVID.

I can't help but think that their "work" makes them a little bit special in the eyes of the law. They really shouldn't be hugging, singing indoors, or flying for a beach holiday.

RetailGail · 12/01/2021 18:13

Absolutely ridiculous it’s allowed to still go ahead in any capacity!!

Not exactly essential is it? Nowhere near
