How is 'organised sport' still allowed to go ahead

Hundreds of sports men/women and associated colleagues are mixing today

just watching the Newcastle v Gloucester game. Obviously no masks, they are close together, as is the game of Rugby. Medics wearing masks but inches from players, referees up close talking. someone has to clean the changing areas after them and drive them to and fro

I'm actually disgusted .... and i'm sure it all came to a halt back in March. They all travel the country, one end to the other then go home to their families. I can't get my head round it, how is this in any way safe? do their kids go to school?

I agree op

FuzzyPuffling · 09/01/2021 19:57

I'm disgusted that Casualty is delayed on the telly because of bloody football. That's adversely affected my mental health. Can football just fuck off please.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 09/01/2021 20:05

@FuzzyPuffling

Came on to say just that. Life is shit enough without tv schedules being disrupted for fucking football.

Agree - that's what the Red Button is for surely?
JayAlfredPrufrock · 09/01/2021 20:07

There’s enough sodding channels that football could be on.

BridgertonBride · 09/01/2021 20:09

is casualty still going? i'm more amazed at that!!

FuzzyPuffling · 09/01/2021 20:11

I cannot tell you quite how much I despise football and footballers at the moment.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 09/01/2021 20:12

So, I have to pay the licence fee so you lot can watch the shit that is Casualty and Eastenders etc. so why shouldn't I be able to watch football or any other sport?

JayAlfredPrufrock · 09/01/2021 20:16

You can watch whatever shit you want. There are enough channels to go round. Without pissing around with the schedules.

Meredithgrey1 · 09/01/2021 20:18

It's not as simple as those jobs are not allowed to be done so every other job should not be done. The testing and bubbling among teams/coaches/management is reasonable. A hairdresser/nail salon etc couldn't do that with everyone they come into contact with.

I’m not sure that’s a valid argument. They all have families for a start, plus they meet other teams regularly, so it’s not exactly a solid bubble.
I’m not saying they should be stopped from playing, but we can’t pretend they are in a safe bubble with no contact outside of it.

If they enforce mask wearing outside like some are suggesting, I wonder if players will have to wear them?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 09/01/2021 20:19

Surely if sport should be banned then the filming of soaps should also be banned. After all, it's completely unnecessary isn't it?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 09/01/2021 20:19

I know, I pay enough for the Sky channels as well as subsiding the shit on the BBC!
DrDreReturns · 09/01/2021 20:24

Shit is an appropriate adjective for Casualty

FuzzyPuffling · 09/01/2021 20:54

I maintain football is dozens of times more shit than Casualty. So ner ner ner ner ner...

Football isn’t an elite Olympic sport though is it?[/quote]
Yes it is.

yankeedoodledandee · 09/01/2021 20:57

It wasn't supposed to be.

GretaGip · 09/01/2021 21:04

So much televised spitting Envy

JayAlfredPrufrock · 09/01/2021 21:05

Sorry of course it is. I’m old enough to think the Olympics is still for amateurs.

But hurrah that Mrs Brown’s boys has fallen off.

I think it’s really wrong and so unnecessary. Sports are literally the most pointless jobs right now. They’re setting a really bad example by touching and hugging and wearing masked around their chins. DS was watching Liverpool last night and couldn’t understand why they could do their sport but he can’t do his, or go to school. Also, the amount of outbreaks in teams show that the (enormous) ‘bubble’ idea isn’t working.

Totally agree, especially where rugby is concerned - with so much close contact, it can't possibly be safe during such a contagious pandemic. Also, it smacks of one rule for professional sportsmen and another for the general population.

Yep if sport is unless soaps, game shows and comedy programs are all unnecessary.

Also some of the elite teams are allowing their stadiums to be used by the NHS.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 09/01/2021 21:09

Now that's one thing we can agree on @JayAlfredPrufrock! My friend told me how great Mrs Browns Boys was so you can imagine my disappointment when I watched 5 minutes of it!

BTW is Charlie still in Casualty? I used to watch it years ago and remember him being really stilted.

BridgertonBride · 09/01/2021 21:10

Halifax town played today

non elite for sure!!

BridgertonBride · 09/01/2021 21:11

i thought soaps had stopped filming. we can watch repeats if we have to.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 09/01/2021 21:13

Apparently not, I read in the week that Eastenders and something else was still filming.

If sport is non essential then so are soaps!

JayAlfredPrufrock · 09/01/2021 21:13

Soaps are filming with social distancing.

I think Charlie is still there. I usually Mumsnet whilst it’s on.
