Clap for Carers

Was it tonight? Nobody clapped on my street (and last time everyone was out and really into it). I did hear a couple of fireworks in the distance at around 8pm. It was tonight... right?

I poked my head out the window at 8 and heard a firework go off, lots of dogs barking and a couple of very enthusiastic people nearby clapping and whistling very loudly for a little bit. No way as many as last year. I felt a bit sad that that spirit of togetherness is gone. However I just couldn't bring myself to join in as I have read so many comments about virtue signalling and about how much the people we're supposed to be clapping for don't want us to, they just want people to follow the rules, which I've done, so I just had a moment of reflection and thought about everyone I'm grateful to and all the people who are working so hard and sacrificing so much throughout this pandemic.

I don’t know if any of my neighbours did but I didn’t despite always doing it last time around...

My reasons being a) all but one of my neighbours has been breaking the rules pretty consistently so didn’t want to witness any hypocrisy, b) it isn’t going to help anyone, c) it’s FREEZING out there.

Nothing here. I think it may have dawned on people that clapping isn’t legal tender and not as helpful to key workers as, say, a pay rise, or not having to pay £120 a year to maintain professional nursing registration, that sort of thing.

We are moving this to the coronavirus topic area now

Yesnoyesnomaybe · 07/01/2021 22:06

We didn’t because I think the nhs staff actually don’t want us to. They want us to follow the rules and since so many people don’t then why be a hypocrite and clap. It was nice at first but to bring it back was just stupid.

Nothing in my cul-de-sac. Last time it was a good 75% turn out. I couldn't hear anything from anywhere else either. I'm a front line nurse. I'm pleased there was no clap. It had its moment, went on a bit too long and started to become too competitive/neighbour shaming.

Nothing here either
