Vaccine Priority: Teachers or Police

Peachered · 07/01/2021 15:05

Only posting in AIBU for the voting (and I have simplified a massively complex issue) but hypothetically if an employment group was to have priority who do you think should be prioritised:

YABU - teachers should have vaccine priority
YANBU - police should have vaccine priority

(voting options don't reflect my preference necessarily).

And, should either of these groups have priority over those on the flu vaccine list (so pre-existing conditions but not CEV)...

Teachers and I say that even though Dh is a police officer. He isn’t close enough to people very often and can wear a mask, be outside etc.

SexTrainGlue · 07/01/2021 15:12

Neither group should displace the first phase (most vulnerable) groups. Because I want to see significant relaxation of restrictions and that cannot happen without vaccinating those who are most likely to be hospitalised

But I would put occupational groups at the top of phase 2, and would put the following in to top category:

  • emergency services, prisons, staff and residents of other residential units, social workers, teachers, military, other officials key to pandemic response

Next:

  • all other key workers
Spaghettipie1 · 07/01/2021 15:31

I think Police are much more at risk than teachers, they have to get very close to people who may be violent/spitting, sit in the back of a car with them, break up illegal parties and gatherings.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 07/01/2021 15:35

Apparently in some places police have been getting the vaccine to stop wastage at the end of the day. This is because some over 80s have been declaring they want the England vaccine not the American oneConfused

PheasantPlucker1 · 07/01/2021 15:36

As a teacher, I say police.

I can do an ok job from home. Its not great for any of us, but its ok short term.

We need police!

Francescaisstressed · 07/01/2021 15:37

Teachers. Key workers need to send their kids to school, and you have to think about that as well. No teachers - kids don't get to school - nurses and Dr's can't work.

FuzzyPuffling · 07/01/2021 15:38

I wouldn't prioritise any occupational group over Phase 1 (over 50s) as it is clear this is the group most at risk.

After that, I would prioritise occupational groups with teachers at the top, closely followed by police/prison staff, then anyone who is in close contact with the public.

PlanDeRaccordement · 07/01/2021 15:39

Police have my vote.
Both after all vulnerable, unless they have higher priority according to list because of their age or sex.

Stompythedinosaur · 07/01/2021 15:41

I think police are more at risk than teachers. I think bus drivers and supermarket workers should be prioritised above either group though due to the numbers of people they are in contact with.

blueangel19 · 07/01/2021 16:00

Fair enough 😂😂😂😂

spanieleyes · 07/01/2021 16:09

@Spaghettipie1
I was hit, punched, kicked and spat at yesterday. I have to sit next to 30 children on a regular basis and invariably have to break up fights ( although not too many parties!) Maybe police and teachers have equally valid claims!

buffyp · 07/01/2021 16:11

I can’t believe people think teachers should be vaccinated before the police. The police can’t work from home and despite what a previous poster said, they most certainly do get close to people. How else do they arrest people? As for the no teachers looking after key children then no police, what about if there’s no police because they have suspected Covid and have to self isolate. The criminals will have grew fun then. Common sense says police before teachers although hopefully they will be done as part of the same group after health and social care workers.

sherrystrull · 07/01/2021 16:21

I'm a teacher. No one should replace vulnerable groups.

I also think police should be done before teachers and nursery staff.

I do however think teachers should be next.

kwiksavenofrillsusername · 07/01/2021 16:27

I know a few police officers and the ones at the frontline tend to be young and physically fit. In my son’s school, there are a couple of TAs who are close to retirement age yet still went into classrooms of 30 kids. But I wouldn’t want to decide between the two groups and I’m glad I don’t have to make that choice.

Samcro · 07/01/2021 16:28

neither, no way should a young fit person get it before a disabled person(for instance)

unmarkedbythat · 07/01/2021 16:29

Police. They are more likely than teachers to have physical contact with people who want to cause harm. But school staff right after them.

ghostyslovesheets · 07/01/2021 16:30

Prison officers
Social workers
Retail staff

They should be added to your list!

Biscuitsneeded · 07/01/2021 16:30

But I'm a teacher and I'm not fit or young!!

Godimabitch · 07/01/2021 16:31

Teachers are less able to social distance or wear masks. Police officers can wear masks and visors and it would seem perfectly normal. But children wouldn't feel very comfortable if teachers did and typically, children have worse personal hygiene than adults which is what most police officers deal with. Plus, police officers are mostly outside, whereas teachers are inside and with larger groups of people.

Godimabitch · 07/01/2021 16:31

But people who are vulnerable before them.

Justcallmecaptainobvious · 07/01/2021 16:32

Who is this going to help OP? There is a huge amount of division in society at the moment, why are you trying to create more?

CakeRequired · 07/01/2021 16:32

Tough one really.

Police have the advantage of usually being outside and can wear masks, but they do get spat on by the lovely general public.

However teachers are in classrooms all day with walking plagues essentially that like to lick each other and anything, they have no masks on and they don't get to go outside a lot. But they are now working from home for most of them.

I'll go with teachers once they go back to the classroom, but police are definitely next, and police get priority while teachers work from home.

Cheeserton · 07/01/2021 16:35

It depends. Front line police officers who have to get down and dirty restraining people, break up covidiot parties, or getting assaulted by people who by definition are quite likely not to give too much of a Covid stuff, are in pretty acute need in my view. Other Police roles, not necessarily so.

I think teachers absolutely need priority too though.

Newgirls · 07/01/2021 16:36

Customer facing supermarket workers before both

I can’t believe the jobs they are doing, loading shelves etc with barely any protection and we all need to eat

Boofay · 07/01/2021 16:37

I hope we're including childcare providers under the same umbrella as teachers in this.
