What is everyone's school experience? I am going a little crazy. We have live online learning of 2 increments of 30mns (maths & english) a day + homework that we have to supervise.

What is everybody else's experience?
The school is relying entirely on us to do the work.

I completely fail to see why if teachers are in with key worker kids in year groups, they can’t stream/record them explaining work to both the kids in the classroom and online at the same time.*
If I'm in my classroom, I'm at the board. That can't be recorded because the camera is on my laptop. It's not physically possible.

CuckooCuckooClock · 08/01/2021 19:23

Online teaching and face to face in classrooms is totally different. You can’t do both at the same time well

Bigbaddebt · 08/01/2021 19:35

I have 3 teens, 2 in exam years. We are in Scotland so not back till Monday but we’ve already had lots of communication from school, teachers have set work to be completed for starting back and full timetable will be in place from Monday. It will be a mixture of live lessons and work independently on tasks. Even S2 have been provided with work in advance. My s6 has calls scheduled with teachers for his free periods (that will be a shock to his system!).

We live in a deprived area so children have received IT where needed but teachers are also recording live lessons so anyone unable to access lessons at the time can catch up. I am so grateful that the teachers have made this as smooth as possible. I’ve seen the teachers emailing at midnight and weekends. They are trying so hard to keep the kids on track as well as their own lives. I can only applaud them.

GintyMcGinty · 08/01/2021 19:38

@Bigbaddebt lucky you. I am in Scotland too. We are getting no live or recorded lessons. We will get worksheets emailed at 9am. That's it. Same crappy shit as last time. More than half of my friends are experiencing pretty similar. Others are getting the same as you.

Shocking that Scotland has completely failed to have a national strategy on this and has left it up to individual schools to decide what to do.

Whenigrowupiwanttobea · 08/01/2021 19:38

Primary school are setting work via Google classroom and running live sessions too. None of the teachers are working from home they are all in school. It must be a logistical nightmare teaching the kids in school and the kids at home simultaneously. The headteacher was given a grant just before Xmas and she used it to buy workbooks and textbooks that were bundled into year group and given to each child. My 8 year old prefers working from the books than Google.
Secondary school is all Google classroom, Hegarty or Seneca. My 13 year old has to register online every morning or I get chased. We are allegedly going to be getting a weekly phone call for support as he has SEN.
I am again realising why I chose to be a Nurse not a school teacher!!!!!

simiisme · 08/01/2021 19:52

I'm a secondary teacher and working even longer days atm. Finally stopped work at 7:30 pm yesterday, 5:45 today.
Our school is following the students' regular timetables, uploading lessons on Teams. I have a live portion of each lesson, lasting from 15 to 25 mins, to explain the work and then point the students at the work on Teams that they need to complete.
I'm tracking 100- 150 students' work per day, answering all their questions on chat on Teams, answering emails from students.
If the students participate, they are able to work independently, freeing up parents to work or care for younger children.
I know teachers (former colleagues) in 6 different secondary schools who are providing work at this level.
Contrary to media/social media claims, we are not furloughed, reclining on our sofas, quaffing cocktails.
If your child's teachers are not providing suitable/enough work, in the first instance you should complain to the school. Please don't go marching off to Ofsted. Really. Just don't.

Bigbaddebt · 08/01/2021 19:52

@GintyMcGinty it seems to be a total lottery. I’m sorry that your school is providing rubbish work. I know that my niece is at a secondary school 2 miles away and is getting the same as you. We are sharing the resources that we are getting with her where we can.

The Scottish system has really dropped in standards in the last 5 years. I’ve seen the content level drop and I’m worried about the future for the younger students. Hopefully something will improve soon.

The school also shared lots of free websites that support the curriculum like National 5 free maths (it covers all years now) and is excellent.

I think it’s important for parents to try and help each other too.

Gooseygoosey12345 · 08/01/2021 19:52

Three 1hour lessons a day, and a stream for extra optional activities. DDs school is exceptional all the time though!

sheridanstar · 08/01/2021 20:09

6 hours live teaching per day, learning platform and worksheets. Private though, still paying fees.

Tessabelle74 · 08/01/2021 20:22

1/2 hour for reception, 1 hour for year 5 and 6. The only complaint I have is the amount of printing off we're being expected to do!

year5teacher · 08/01/2021 20:24

We have so many key worker children in that we are only able to free up one teacher per year group to do home learning for all the children in that year who are at home, or we would have 30 children in our classes (at least). It’s not possible to please everyone. We are doing our best.

Commonwasher · 08/01/2021 20:28

We are 4 days in, give them a chance.
Most schools spent time arranging covid testing not switching all their learning to online. Teachers had no more notice than we did about children learning from home.

SarahTwin · 08/01/2021 20:30

Yr 5 state primary and we having normal lessons via Microsoft team from 8.45-3pm. Teachers are in school with any key worker children and online all day. The school planned from September for the possibility of a second lockdown so from Tuesday morning we are all logged on (albeit in a slight panic). We’ve been really lucky and the teachers have been fantastic. Lucky we had enough laptops in the house!

toocold54 · 08/01/2021 20:37

How are you managing to juggle the online and VKW children at the same time?
Especially year 5 are still quite young.

Supermum29 · 08/01/2021 20:41

Daughter in year 4, no live lessons. Work gets set for the day at 8:30 every day. Teacher provides a suggested timetable so the kids don’t spend all day on one bit of work. Two drop in sessions on google classroom every day so the kids can go on and ask questions about their work if they get stuck. Work to be submitted each day but we’ve not had any feedback on any of the work yet.

Clarityiskey · 08/01/2021 20:57

How might anyone complaining suggest that in schools where all staff are in teaching classes of 60% capacity (all KW/vulnerable) that they manage to do 4 hours live teaching, plus feedback and marking for children in class and home, plus keep on top of the really important social emotional non academic needs necessitating private phone calls or zoom/teams meetings, oh and trying to maintain some sort of personal work life balance and maybe even see their own children in an evening before 10pm, that they do it? Assuming of course that noone gets covid due to complete lack of social distancing or ppe. Yes I am referring to primary schools.

nerysw · 08/01/2021 21:00

You don't say if it's primary or secondary but either way give the teachers a break. This is week one (and not a full week for most). I have a primary with no online interaction and a secondary with some and what the schools have done at no notice and with having to teach in school for vulnerable and keyworker children at the same time as putting together remote learning is amazing.

bobisbored · 08/01/2021 21:00

For those of you wondering what the teachers are doing with their time, I'll tell you. We are in school teaching key worker and vulnerable children, we are planning online lessons that are suitable for children of all abilities, whilst being mindful that some may not have access to laptops or an adult who can support them. We are marking work that is being sent in online. We are replying to emails from worried parents. Some of us are trying to do all of that whilst homeschooling our own children, who actually qualify for a keyworker place in school but we know they're safer at home. So when you're bitching on social media about lazy teachers and complaining to ofsted perhaps just give your fucking heads a wobble.

Not the person who posted this, but am doing very similar.

My school is lucky to have a very small number of KW/V children (average of 4 per year group of 60). We have one teacher in and one at home each day. KW children are on our class laptops (we have enough because numbers are low) accessing in the same way as others. Only difference is that we direct their time more than we do with children at home. So in addition to the live lessons, we will direct their other learning time, whereas we can't do this for those at home because we don't know what else they're contending with at home. KW children have a break and lunch to play on the playground too.

I actually have liked being in school because it's giving me an insight into how those at home might be experiencing the lessons. They're also the bravest at yelling "Miss you're not sharing your screen any more!"

JaninaDuszejko · 08/01/2021 21:11

So when you're bitching on social media about lazy teachers and complaining to ofsted perhaps just give your fucking heads a wobble.

You know, I have lots of teachers in my family, I know how hard they have all been working and what a shit hand they've been deal with by the government and have a lot of sympathy for them (and think the vast majority of my 3DCs teachers are amazing and do a wonderful job). But honestly, comments like this just make me think FFS think about the fact that you are representing your profession on social media. If one of my colleagues posted a comment like this on social media they'd get the sack (and my profession is criticized regularly on here). So how about you @bobisbored and teachers like you (who I'm sure are a small minority of the profession) start acting a lot more professionally, stop complaining about your clients and maybe you'd hear a lot less complaints about teachers.

noblegiraffe · 08/01/2021 21:16

Clients?

We have pupils and classes not clients.

Gingercat86 · 08/01/2021 21:26

Same - 2 x 30 minute zoom (maths & English) sessions & where they explain to the children what the work is for the day, they then work through this. Tbh this is enough for us as both working full time and it's hard work with both children one with ASD.

Lynz78 · 08/01/2021 21:27

Very lucky with mine ds yr8 has all his classes on Googlemeet teachers give work or whole lesson online if only giving work they stay online for help. Dd yr6 has teacher online at 9am sets work is monitoring online for questions comes on to give answers back on at 11am and 1pm. Both are kept busy I have not had to do anything.

Yorkshiretolondon · 08/01/2021 21:37

@ivfbeenbusy

You can apparently make a complaint to ofsted if you feel that what the school is providing is sub standard
Nice... why not just speak to the school first. What happened to people
willandgrace · 08/01/2021 21:57

Genuine question - if teachers can’t do live lessons because they are teaching KW and vulnerable children in the classroom won’t they be 6 weeks (at least) ahead and everything will need repeating when the other kids get back?
