Vaccine 💉 availability for people who want to pay privately

Once vulnerable and key workers have been vaccinated, do you think the vaccine will be available to people who want to pay privately?

I am sure will be available privately in London. They will just source it from other countries.

Atalune · 07/01/2021 13:35

Well I think teachers are incredible and as a profession I admire them immensely.

I have my DipEd but have never been a class teacher. And from the horror of my work placements I was never cut out for it. A good teacher is worth their weight in gold and IMO should be paid far far more.

And yes it makes total sense to me for teachers to be vaccinated as a priority so schools can open. The elderly and vulnerable shield and we get the largest parts of society moving as a priority with those elderly and shielding be next.

But what do I know!

Ratherembarrassed2020 · 07/01/2021 13:52

Allowing a separate private route to vaccination for those that want it would relieve pressure on the NHS. I'm all for it.

Parker231 · 07/01/2021 14:04

Their are legal provisions preventing private vaccinations.
Why should someone jump the queue. There is already an order of priority for all of the population over the age of 16.

Is that definitely right? I mean if you bought it in Germany legally can you not import it into the UK?

unmarkedbythat · 07/01/2021 14:33

I hope not.

Iwantacookie · 07/01/2021 14:50

I'm sure I heard Boris say we wouldn't be allowed but its Boris as soon as him and his mates find a way to make money out of it they will.

lunar1 · 07/01/2021 14:54

I imagine it will be available privately once a tipping point is reached with the supply chain catching up and there being more than enough available.

This probably won't be until well after the vulnerable groups are vaccinated. It will probably only be the under 50's left to vaccinate at that point.

viccat · 07/01/2021 14:56

No doubt I'll get told I'm selfish but I really, really hope it will be - not right now of course but once they get through the priority groups and move to the under 50s group.

It already sounds like it's a postcode lottery with some areas vaccinating their over 80s as early as mid December while others are still waiting so it's not like there an orderly queue for it...

There are four pharmacies within walking distance from my house - if one of them was offering the vaccine privately say from June onwards for those who can pay, that would reduce pressure on the NHS roll out.

I'm self employed and being ill and unable to work and the risk of long covid would be problematic for at the moment (haven't been eligible for any financial support during covid even though I've lost work).

Hobbesmanc · 07/01/2021 14:58

I'm pretty sure that black market vaccines will be available soon. People have been buying prescription meds from Indian and Mexican pharmaceutical sites on the internet for years.

As for the administration- well there are loads of dodgy lip filler and botox "clinics"

Anyone with a decent printer will be able to forge a vaccination passport anyway so airlines etc will still rely on airport rapid testing

Parker231 · 07/01/2021 15:00

viccat - why should you have priority over someone who may be in the same or worse circumstances but can’t afford to pay for it?

NoSleepInTheHeat · 07/01/2021 15:40

As soon as there are limitations to what people can do if they haven't been vaccinated (flights for ex) I imagine it will be available privately. Seems fair enough, otherwise you would have all the 'younger ones' ie birth-50yo unable to travel vs all the 'older ones' able to.

blueangel19 · 07/01/2021 15:44

Of course it will be available privately. This should not clash with the ones the NHS or government ordered. I will not have it either way. But it is shortsighted to feel negative about more people having access to the vaccine. Some philanthropist may even gifted to their cleaners and nannies and the more people vaccinated the better.

Viccat did say once all the priority groups had been done. How would it be different to buying the flu vaccines, which anyone not on the Gap priority list does? It would actually help to take pressure off the NHS if private vaccinations could be available alongside them once the priority groups have been done. Or perhaps even while they are being done, but only available for the priority groups at the same time the NHS are doing them.
Staffy1 · 07/01/2021 18:26

*GP priority list

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 07/01/2021 18:32

Oh neoliberals all love the idea that them buying things they want that others can't afford "takes pressure off" to excuse their self-interest.

The problem is that "priority groups" will likely not cover all the people who will be facing risk re the virus much like "free school meals" only really covers those on the verge of destitution not the vast numbers of working poor.

It should not be privately available, it should be free to all at point of need.

How exactly are they going to legally provide it. You do realise it’s not a matter of doing what you want. It has only been approved for emergency use under directions but the NHS. It cannot be bought or sold or given to anyone else to use.
OnlyTeaForMe · 07/01/2021 21:42

It has only been approved for emergency use under directions but the NHS.

That is only for the two vaccines currently in use. Soon there will be many vaccines in circulation around the world and private providers who want to offer it will likely negotiate with another supplier. Let's not forget that some NHS doctors also do 1-2 days a week in private practice (very lucrative!). I'm sure if they want their company to offer it they will find a way!

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 08/01/2021 07:34

@oakleaffy

Just don't understand why trained volunteers cannot administer vaccine? It surely can't be that difficult to do?

Many civilians are trained to inject 'Prenoxad' or Insulin, or epi-pens.

This will probably happen, but administering an intramuscular injection from a vial is significantly more skilled than administering a subcutaneous injection from a pre-filled syringe or pen.

They won’t be able to do this legally. You can’t just buy and import medicines without appropriate licenses and permissions.
