Vaccine 💉 availability for people who want to pay privately

Once vulnerable and key workers have been vaccinated, do you think the vaccine will be available to people who want to pay privately?

And why should teachers get priority when there are many other professions working in scenarios that put them at risk - ie. police being spat at?

Because the 'childcare' that comes with schools being open enables multiple other parts of society and the economy to be open. The same is not true for police officers. It's not about being kind to teachers it's about how much society needs teachers to be at work and healthy.

Thatsnotmynamename · 06/01/2021 23:13

Initial reaction is that it would be wrong to be made available privately. However if we get to a point that we have stores of the vaccine in the UK and the only thing limiting roll-out is the speed at which the NHS can administer it, then actually, I can't see a problem with it. As long as it's not taking available vaccines from the NHS, then it would mean 1) more people being vaccinated - which how can that be a bad thing? 2) people jumping up the priority queue faster as those who have had it privately won't need their appointment.

To stress - that is only if supply allows private jabs could run along side those free on the NHS without having any impact on slowing down the NHS roll out, so no one would get their jab later than if it was solely available on the NHS, but people could get it sooner.

Staffy1 · 06/01/2021 23:22

No. They stated it would not be allowed to be bought privately until "everyone" had been offered a vaccine, so I'm guessing never as they're going to take forever to do everyone and no one under 18 will be offered one anyway (unless they eventually change this). Bit strange really as people over 16 with severe learning difficulties are somewhere in the prioritised list, so that's a contradiction.

cdtaylornats · 06/01/2021 23:22

The government have ordered enough to vaccinate everybody.

MiddleClassMother · 06/01/2021 23:28

I would definitely pay for it and even my entire family if it means I can go see them. However Boris has supposedly ordered enough for everyone, so it won't need to be available privately (unless you have a private GP of course)

Parker231 · 06/01/2021 23:28

No - there is a set order in which people will be vaccinated and they will work through the tiers until ever over 16 years old has received their vaccinations.
There is a paper (which I now can’t find) which prohibits it being sold for private use.
Why should one group who can pay jump ahead of someone else?

maggiso · 06/01/2021 23:31

My understanding is that all over 16 and adults will be offered the vaccine by the nhs in vulnerability and age group order. The first wave is for those over 50, but vaccinating the oldest ( over 80) care home residents and carers, nhs front line staff and most vulnerable first. The second wave will be for younger healthy people. . The nhs information says that it will not be available privately.

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 06/01/2021 23:37

I don't know, I mean every other vaccination seems to be available to pay for privately. So possibly.

Peppafrig · 06/01/2021 23:39

No but I think construction workers who are mixing and traveling all over the county should be vaccinated high up the list

Peppafrig · 06/01/2021 23:41

@CloseSchoolsProtecttheNHS and we don’t need police officers to be at work and healthy . They should be equal on the list to get vaccinated

BungleandGeorge · 06/01/2021 23:42

Stage 1 is about protecting individuals at risk (be aware these groups are more than a third of the country). Stage 2 is about reducing the transmission and spread of the disease. Given the amount that covid has cost us I’m pretty sure that everyone who will take it will be eligible, to try and eradicate the disease if possible. At the moment children aren’t eligible but with further trial data then they may be added too. In the second stage perhaps people could be offered private jabs to skip the queue, but I’d also heard politicians have said no private provision

TableFlowerss · 06/01/2021 23:43

I don’t think, certainly not this year.

In a couple of years or so, maybe like the flu jab each year, whereby you can get the vaccine on the NHS if you’re vulnerable, but pay private if your not. (Well I assume you can pay private for the flu jab).

Certainly not until the wider world has been vaccinated.

QualityRoads · 07/01/2021 00:02

I sincerely hope not. Pity you didn't enable voting. The result might have been interesting.

Mumisnotmyonlyname · 07/01/2021 00:05

No. It would be utterly stupid and counterproductive to public health. Doesn't mean it won't happen, however, in these peculiar times. Though I also seem to remember that someone official said not (also not meaning it won't).

ZaphodBeeblerox · 07/01/2021 00:10

I don’t think it should be available privately but I am certain it will be.

Much like private PCR and antibody tests were available for £150-£200 in May 2020 when it was extremely difficult to get a test on the NHS.

Keepdistance · 07/01/2021 00:28

I think it needs to be after 50s but be available then because
1 people might want it before getting pg
2 going abroad - cost of travel insurance
3 people with kids or woh cant exactly shield
4 some young people have already had it and been hospitalised - it doesnt make sense not to vax nor those with long covid
5 others may not want to get covid every 2m and spend week(s) in bed
6 many categories are slightly raised risk - mild asthma- overweight, high bp
7 oxford only costs £3 or so so pretty much every sibgle person could afford that.
8 cost of self isolating with covid if you do get it frequently and your family.
9 time your kids would miss school when you have it again
10 to get economy moving and reduce sick time.
11 if they do reduce transmission everyone benefits
12 some poorer countries are hot countries and dont seem to have such an issue
13 30/40 to life expectancy if a long time to live with damaged lungs etc
14 at the worst extreme the death of a parent is going to devastate a child. If only 10% of population has had it up to 10x as many under 40s will die.
10 long term damage of catching (multiple times)
11 women at higher risk of long covid. Especially not great when they do more childcare and housework

LangClegsInSpace · 07/01/2021 01:25

I hope none of the people who think this is a good idea are the same people who were yammering at WHO to 'declare a pandemic'.

RingtheBells · 07/01/2021 04:16

Maybe next year, certainly not until everyone over 50 gets it.

PolarExpressislate · 07/01/2021 04:33

@Atalune

I hope not.

However I would very much like all education staff to jumpy to the front of the queue and also get a 10% pay rise.

You get paid enough for the very little you do.
PolarExpressislate · 07/01/2021 04:40

@NourishedOutdoors

No, it won't be possible.

And why should teachers get priority when there are many other professions working in scenarios that put them at risk - ie. police being spat at?

Teachers think they are above everyone, got no respect for them at all.
PolarExpressislate · 07/01/2021 04:44

@oakleaffy

Just don't understand why trained volunteers cannot administer vaccine? It surely can't be that difficult to do?

Many civilians are trained to inject 'Prenoxad' or Insulin, or epi-pens.

You also need to be trained in the safe handling of drugs, informed consent, Adult life support in case of Anaphylaxis, and biology.
Ginfordinner · 07/01/2021 07:04

Why the goady posts about teachers @PolarExpressislate? Hmm

Firefliess · 07/01/2021 07:46

Does every vaccinater need to be trained in all those things though @polar? Couldn't they train up a newbie in the basics of how to stick a needle in someone safely and buddy them up with a proper medical person who could watch out for emergencies, ensure good drug storage, etc for both of them?

Musicaltheatremum · 07/01/2021 08:01

We have been told to dispose of vaccine packaging along with the needles into the box that gets incinerated to ensure that people don't steal it to make fake vaccine!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 07/01/2021 08:25

@garlictwist

Well there aren't enough for people to be offered it anyway even if they did want to pay.
??? If you mean today, right now, you are correct. But that's because they are making it right now...
