3-5 Teaching Hours for remote learning?

I heard Gavin Williamson say this is the Commons today.
Anyone know what that means in practice? Is there any guidance yet?

For who?
How old is your child? Are you happy with what they are receiving? What is appropriate for a 6 year old is very different to a 14 year old.

Taken directly from the guidance:

When teaching pupils remotely, we expect schools to:
• set assignments so that pupils have meaningful and ambitious work each day in a number of different subjects
• set work that is of equivalent length to the core teaching pupils would receive in school, and as a minimum:

•	primary: 3 hours a day, on average, across the school cohort

•	secondary: 4 hours a day, with more for pupils working towards formal qualifications this year

@BertNErnie

Apparently this guidance is changing.

Ohbabybab · 06/01/2021 19:54

Yes he said it’s going to a mandatory 3-5 hours which will be Ofsted monitored. Just wondered if anyone new what that meant

Ohbabybab · 06/01/2021 19:57

I just wondered if this means active delivery or work set?

OP posts:
Ffsffsffsffsffs · 06/01/2021 19:58

It's work that keeps the kids bust for 3-4 hours a day. And by busy, they mean actively learning - could be live lessons, reading through a PowerPoint and making notes, essay writing, worksheets etc.

Ffsffsffsffsffs · 06/01/2021 20:00

My school are doing no live lessons, friends are doing some but have had huge problems with connectivity, engagement, inappropriate behaviour etc. My teenager prefers stuff she can just be left to get on with.

TheFallenMadonna · 06/01/2021 20:04

They have added today that it must include some video lessons, either live or pre recorded by the teacher, or another high quality provider, eg Oak.

BertNErnie · 06/01/2021 20:05

This is the new bit. We have no updated guidance yet.

@TheFallenMadonna that’s what I was hoping to find out more about. Did he say when the guidance would be out?

Yes sorry I was trying to find the info

Ohbabybab · 06/01/2021 20:06

@BertNErnie Ah I see

Which sounds a tall order for 4-6 year olds. I’m not sure mine could work that long without adult engagement and encouragement. Certainly not independently.
Ohbabybab · 06/01/2021 20:07

Is Oak Academy like BBC Bitesize?

I speculate it will be work set. They will also have to define what online lessons mean so there should be more clarity.

I would assume it means either pre recorded videos or live sessions. I'd also imagine Oak Academy will qualify as those are pre recorded.

TheFallenMadonna · 06/01/2021 20:08

My teaching tends to consist of explanation, modelling, lots of practice, feedback. So that is what I do remotely too. The explanation is the video, and I feedback individually.

Ohbabybab · 06/01/2021 20:08

I’m concerned about DD falling behind compared to the key worker children in her class who are being taught by the teacher. So just wanted to see if new guidance would help this or not.

TheWayOfTheWorld · 06/01/2021 20:10

There is absolutely no way I can teach my infant and primary school age children for 3-4 hours a day and do everything else I need to do Confused

We did 1-1.5 hours per day last year and that seemed fine.

TheFallenMadonna · 06/01/2021 20:10

Changing the guidance after plans have been made and provision has started is both irritating and unsurprising.

Ohbabybab · 06/01/2021 20:13

@TheFallenMadonna that sounds like a good offer. Unfortunately (and I know it’s early days but my understanding was schools should have an offer ready) we are just getting worksheets and links to bitesize

The provision in school should be the same as what is being provided at home. This should mean there is not a disparity of provision and those at home are not penalised.
Ohbabybab · 06/01/2021 20:16

@BertNErnie unfortunately from speaking to friends and threads on here, there seems to be big disparities in what the offers are

OP posts:
TheFallenMadonna · 06/01/2021 20:17

The video is short, because the "lesson" is that plus the practice, as it is in the classroom. That's what worries me about the idea of a video lesson.

Have you contacted your head teacher? If this is the case then it doesn't seem fair or right that the children in school are accessing different learning than those who are at home.

Ohbabybab · 06/01/2021 20:18

@BertNErnie I’m going to give them until next week as I do appreciate it’s hard all round but if it continues then I will.
