Close contact where you didn’t contract Covid?

Does anyone have stories where you had contact with a covid+ person and then didn’t go on to get covid yourself? A relative has tested positive and although we were distanced, we did not have masks and I am trying to keep my anxiety from spiraling out of control.

One of the experts (forget who) said you have a 30-40% chance of catching covid if someone you live with gets it. So most people don’t get it even if they have a close contact. HOWEVER this might not be be true for the new variant as it is much more infectious.

Fingers crossed you don’t get it. I guess this is a wake-up call to observe the rules.

DH was at the gym at the same time as someone who tested positive (each session is at hour so all there at same time). He does follow the 2m distancing where he can and hygiene, but it's a very small gym. He hasn't had any symptons. Also, I have a friend whose DD caught it, but no one else in the household had symptons.

JanewaysBun · 06/01/2021 13:29

Me and DS
Suspect I had actually had it earlier in 2020 though

CranberriesChoccyAgain · 06/01/2021 13:29

I started a thread just today about my concerns re the accuracy of the tests. I don't have much confidence in them. How prevalent are false positives? Up to 20% according to some sources.

Reallybadidea · 06/01/2021 13:29

I was nose to nose with a colleague in a packed lift the day before he lost his sense of taste and smell. No masks. He later tested positive. I never did.

storminabuttercup · 06/01/2021 13:31

I know couples where on had it, the other didn't, both had symptoms. One couple had kids too who weren't tested as no symptoms

yuyubooboo · 06/01/2021 13:31

Loads. Hugged someone- wasn't wearing a mask. Pre masks and social distancing. Been sneezed on a lot too by covid patients pre masks. Worked two 12 hour shifts with two positive colleagues. Didn't catch it. It's very strange to predict.

toobusytothink · 06/01/2021 13:31

Son had it. I didn’t socially distance from him during isolation. Dd and I didn’t (both tested negative 5 days after his +ve result). I know of quite a few where 1 person in household got it but others didn’t.

KitKatastrophe · 06/01/2021 13:32

Loads of people I know have had to isolate for a "close contact" and none of the developed the virus.

My brothers girlfriend spent an hour doing one to one martial arts training with someone who later tested positive. She didnt get it .

Brother in law tested positive, neither his wife or child developed it (child tested positive far later, having caught it at school)

I know of lots of secondary age kids who had to SI for 2 weeks after a "close contact" tested positive, none went on to develop symptoms. It is not as contagious as people seem to think.

Scbchl · 06/01/2021 13:32

My daughters best friend who she sat beside in every class tested positive and neither my daughter or any other friend who had to isolate got it.

LemonTT · 06/01/2021 13:34

Yes. Very close living together contact. bizarrely the closest contacts to the positive skipped it.

Lots of possible reasons for this. In the end those of us who tested negative sort of hoped for asymptomatic positive more than the negative. 🤷‍♀️

Quartz2208 · 06/01/2021 13:34

DH and DS had it over Christmas and neither myself or DD did.

That said we think we had it in March - but the same holds true then as it was the two of us who had it and the other two didnt.

In terms of false positives DH pretty much had classic mild covid with a cough and lingering symptoms that have taken longer than a cold to shake (although he is fine)

WishingHopingThinkingPraying · 06/01/2021 13:35

OP you have a very good chance of not getting it but I think it would be more helpful to properly address your anxiety rather than try to find other people's stories to rely on. Are you clinically vulnerable? What exactly are you afraid of?

BeesAnkles · 06/01/2021 13:35

A friend of mine was away for the weekend with two friends. They shared a hotel room and drove back in the same car (6 hours). Masks were only worn in public.

Two of them tested positive upon returning and the other one negative.

Parkandride · 06/01/2021 13:37

Parent had lengthy haircut and hairdresser tested positive a couple of days later. So masks but zero distancing and they didn't catch it

joystir59 · 06/01/2021 13:38

Sat having coffee and chin wag for two hours with my friend who went on to develop symptoms and test positive 6 days later. I didn't get it.

My ds had Covid end of March, very sick with it. I think i may have had mild symptoms a few days later but dh and dd didn't get any.

hotcrosswhat · 06/01/2021 13:41

My mum works at a nursery and was looking after a little one who had covid - they only had very mild symptoms and were fine, thank goodness, but it meant they were still attending for days while infectious. But my mum didn't catch it, and no one else there did. DM had no symptoms while isolating and an antibody test later on confirmed she's never had it.

Someone at my brother's college and another person at his work came in with symptoms followed by positive tests a few days later so he's been exposed twice I guess...he was unaffected both times thankfully.

(I'm the one who lives near Leicester, they're 100 miles away, but I only know one person around here who has had it, it's odd how different things look at an anecdotal/personal level!!)

yearinyearout · 06/01/2021 13:43

Well a few months ago my parents went out for lunch with my sister the day before she developed symptoms. They travelled in the car together (not far) and sat one across a table from her, the other next to her, with no masks as they were eating, and it was indoors. Neither caught it (unless they were asymptomatic)

planningaheadtoday · 06/01/2021 13:44

A friend of mine was on holiday living with a group and all 3 others in the group got it but she didn't,
another friend who's husband had it but she didn't get symptoms despite looking after him. And another younger girl (21) at university living with two others in her house who had it, she didn't get it and she was tested three times. Tested once with general screening when they found two of the house to be positive, then a private test a week later then a test at the end of isolation to check she hadn't caught it.

But as PP said this was probably is the older strain. Hopefully scientists will be able to give more information soon.

covetingthepreciousthings · 06/01/2021 13:44

We had a family bereavement in Autumn, which meant we had hospice visits and had to do a couple of trips to help clear a house - two sets of family members all contracted Covid during this time however both myself and DH didn't, I was surprised but relieved. Although I guess we could have asymptomatically spread it to them or we could have had it but been asymptomatic.

greyyaa · 06/01/2021 14:26

A&E staff, been around it day in and day out for 8 months, often just a flimsy surgical mask, haven't had symptoms warranting a test. (No antibody test since May though)

Crumpetycrump · 06/01/2021 14:29

I had a 3 hour meeting with my boss in his office in November. No masks but we were 2m apart for most of the time. He coughed a few times and had a nasty headache. He tested positive 2 days later but I didn’t catch it fortunately.

rosie39forever · 06/01/2021 15:11

My cousin (teacher) tested positive, really poorly for 4 weeks, her partner who she shared a bed with every night has tested negative every week (NHS employee) go figure!

ExConstance · 06/01/2021 15:15

I work in care. 30 members of our staff have had Covid and of these about half were the only person in their family to get it.
