Homeschooling- does anyone have “live” help?

Lemons1571 · 06/01/2021 11:27

What I mean is, if your primary child gets stuck on a task, is there anyone available at the school that they can ask for help? We are struggling here. It’s a bit much for 10 year olds to be expected to keep a log of issues and review these at a later date?

Is there not a class email account? I know where I work we have an email and teachers are checking it a few times a day. Could you ring and ask the school if someone can get back to you?

TheGreatWave · 06/01/2021 11:36

I think so, a little at least. DD put in the chat that she was having issues (possibly due to me being in a teams meeting) and she got a reply quite quickly.

Lemons1571 · 06/01/2021 12:19

I’ve emailed the whole-school homeschooling email address 🤷🏼‍♀️ No reply yet!
No wonder there is so much catch up to do when they get back to school. Loads of kids must get stuck on different things that are never resolved as there isn’t the time / infrastructure to do so.

My kids school uses FFI and they can ask questions on there and a teacher gets back to them. My eldest asked one this morning and it was answered in 18 minutes.

emmathedilemma · 06/01/2021 12:34

Not wanting to teacher bash here but where are they / what are they doing given they'd normally be in the classroom with the kids? Surely they should be on the end of email / phone / Teams etc if they've set them a task to do?

ritzbiscuits · 06/01/2021 12:41

We have a daily Zoom at 3pm for questions, but teacher is also available throughout the day on Class Dojo. She responded to a message in minutes and marked his maths work as soon as it was uploaded.

Hippymama · 06/01/2021 12:41

Yes, our school is doing live lessons over Microsoft Teams. My Y4 child had one this morning and is about to start another this afternoon. I've been very impressed with how our school has dealt with home learning both this time and during the last lockdown, but I know from speaking with friends that many schools aren't as good in this respect. We are a very small village school so don't know if that makes a difference.

Aliwali77 · 06/01/2021 12:43

I am going to be teaching the Key Worker children in my class all day so would only be able to check issues for those at home intermittently during the day. Not ideal I know but that is the way our school has chosen to do it.

Imiss2019 · 06/01/2021 12:44

Ours are doing live lessons. Sometimes for the whole hour sometimes for 15 minutes and then they complete the work independently. On this case the subject teacher remains available on teams for questions and help

I would guess it depends on how many kids are in as key worker children / vulnerable children. As they will have to be in smaller groups to enable distancing (I assume?) that could mean one teacher to 12 kids, which would quickly use up all your teaching staff in the classroom.
emmathedilemma · 06/01/2021 12:54

ah i guess @SirSamuelVimes seems a bit of a crap deal for the kids at home though! We only had a handful of hub schools open for KW children here last time, not sure what's happening now.

Whyarewehardofthinking · 06/01/2021 13:01

It depends if they are covering keyworker provision; I'm in on days when I have my A Level students working on my classwork at home. I'll try to answer during the day but obviously I will be with other students. We have so many vulnerable/keyworker students that we have no way around this.

JanewaysBun · 06/01/2021 13:18

No wonder people are pushing the key worker rules of kids at school are getting full schooling in some schools (not all) and kids at home have no help.... I for one wouldn't blame them although of course it's spreading the virus more...
Furlough needs to be made massively more available for childcare reasons and you'll find many more kids at home, I would enjoy the chance to HS (I'm a HS advocate anyway and am. Considering for my DC) and I'm sure many other parents would take the chance if they could - steam through the class work then have more chance to teach your DC additional subjects.

SirSamuelVimes · 06/01/2021 14:47

Don't know what it's like now but in the Spring/summer lockdown the kids in my dd's school weren't doing "work" in the day, they were essentially being babysat and did lots of colouring in. I had a friend tearing her hair out because she was working full time, then trying to squeeze all the remote learning work into the evenings with her DD to stop her falling behind / getting upset she wasn't getting reward points for doing the work like her friends who were at home were doing. So basically everyone was losing!

MrsBobDylan · 06/01/2021 17:35

I've emailed 6 times today all about log ins and got replies quickly each time. DS school is using the most unbelievable amount of online learning support and we have to register at 8.45 and review at 2.45 via Teams every day.

He had a full time table for the day of things for us to work on and we have just been told to prepare materials for science tomorrow. It is exhausting but very impressive!

SaltyAF · 06/01/2021 17:37

Yes, Teams. I can receive questions all day and am live teaching 3/4 of my timetable. My primary DCs aren't getting the live teaching but can seek support via Teams.

SaltyAF · 06/01/2021 17:39

While I supervise KW/V though, they are largely being taught by their own teacher and I'm just overseeing, so I'm still available to answer messages at those times.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 06/01/2021 17:51

I submitted several pieces of work today on behalf of my children. All were commented on within a few minutes.
I also noticed a file that some people couldn't open had an alternative format within half an hour, with an apology for those who couldn't open it.

Apparently the teachers are available 8.30-4.30. All their work is designed to be flexible tp allow for shared devices and parents working hours (Primary).

Lemons1571 · 06/01/2021 17:57

Still not heard back. Guess we just leave what we don’t understand 🤷🏼‍♀️ Shit isn’t it

I work in a school (TA) and we are operating as such that every day there is 1 teacher and 1 LSA in to teach the children in school and 1 teacher and 1 LSA working from home to mark and answer queries from children at home. It is alternated who is home and who is on site but there should theoretically always be minimum 2 adults (per year group) available to help the children at home. Keeping my main screen open, I could see as soon as work was submitted or a question asked and respond - I imagine the longest this may take is an hour (when working from home I'll also have my 9 year old and 1 year old to contend with) but I think 10-20 minutes is realistic for most submissions.

MarshaBradyo · 06/01/2021 18:00

We have constant response from TA or teacher on their platform

Might be teams not sure

ceeveebee · 06/01/2021 18:04

Yes - very impressed with our school this time round. 3 class calls a day, 4 pre recorded video lessons can send messages to teachers through Google classrooms which they reply to very quickly
Teachers are teaching remotely, TAs are in the classroom with the key worker children who are doing the same online lessons as those at home. There are very few in class as our school was, quite rightly, incredibly strict (two key worker parents needed and must work out of the home)

EloraaDanan · 06/01/2021 18:10

Nope. Nothing. Just worksheets posted on Google classrooms, some of which can’t be edited to turn in and the format constantly jumbling things up or losing what she’s typed. Everything she has turned in hasn’t been looked at yet.

I feel so deflated for her tonight. DD is a child that loves to learn and since the last lockdown she is rapidly losing the motivation and confidence, I fear this will just finish it all of completely. I want to start supplanting what they’re putting online with mor engaging activities but the teacher hasn’t posted anything for tomorrow yet so I can’t plan.

Before I get jumped on, this isn’t teacher bashing, this is how it is for us and I feel let down.

EloraaDanan · 06/01/2021 18:10

Supplementing nor supplanting Hmm

MarshaBradyo · 06/01/2021 18:13

Have a look at this primary provision thread. There’s a few others in same boat but also there’s good advice on what to do if it’s not meeting guidelines
