75% of my school are in

ReginaPhalangee · 05/01/2021 22:24

That's it in a nutshell. Three quarters of my school are classed as keyworker or vulnerable. Might as well chuck the other 50 in and be done with it.

Lockdown 1... 12 children.

No PPE and we've got to double our workload for the ones needing remote learning whilst we are teaching our classes. And then making phone calls to check on them.

It's the same for every school in my area.

Schools are being used as a childminding service (hence no teaching and support staff watching them) so everyone who thinks its better their child is in school at the minute is wrong they are not being taught as normal.

Flaxmeadow · 06/01/2021 00:45

During the first lockdown (March) many key workers didn't take up the offer of a school place. This time round, more will.

This time people will feel more confident about using it, people are not as wary now as they were back in the spring. We didnt know as much back then and a lot of people really did stay at home

If they're anything like last time, it will be an after school club type situation, run by teaching assistants.

LizDiz · 06/01/2021 00:45

Agreed. All this crap about 'my very important husband cant lose his job because we won't be able to pay the mortgage ' and ' I wah but it's really tricky' is no different to what we are all having to deal with. I really think the list needs to be looked at again, the priority s hould be for front line key workers only either LP or where both are KW , not Sandra with her part time job WAH and her husband Dave who runs his own business from home buthe cant possibly be expected to teach his own children whilst Sandra takes some video calls. WTF do you think the rest of us are going to be doing ?

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 06/01/2021 00:46

I see most families are fighting to return to school despite the obvious risks whether critical key worker or vulnerable or can’t otherwise home school.

Therefore as the risks are already high but seemingly acceptable - why not accept all 100% as only marginal elevated risk. Very high risk and super high risk is immaterial.

Once cases are detected the school will by necessity close anyway. Or possibly when not enough healthy staff available to remain open.

Like a wild forest fire it probably makes little marginal difference as to intensity once it's out of control.

Naturally not ideal as it defeats the scientific lockdown saving lives reasons for Covid control which will perpetuate more longer term cycles of opening up and locking down. Ultimately causing more lives and livelihoods lost in the longer term.

Fucket · 06/01/2021 00:46

Tbh if your work involves patient confidentiality, perhaps your employer ought to re-examine whether it’s truly possible to wfh. In those circumstances perhaps you ought to be going to a proper clinic, and contacting your patients from there.

LonelyandLost80 · 06/01/2021 00:47

@sweetea1 whilst I agree last time round we we’re providing a childcare facility this time round it’s very different. We have teachers and support staff working remotely and in school all following the same curriculum, whilst it definitely looks different to our usual standard I can assure you this time round the focus is back on maintaining education as much as we can!

At my children’s school the teachers are delivering lessons at the front of the class to the handful of KW children in school and the rest of class remotely simultaneously for the entire day!

happystone · 06/01/2021 00:48

Keyworker list is so long my dog qualifies. All the people on mums net saying “school have to stay open what about the vulnerable children” well the vulnerable children parents could be on uc or non key worker and there kids haven’t got a space Parents who took Keyworker place because they “found it hard last time my mh suffered” everyone’s mh did so did non Keyworker and old and unemployed every ones mh suffered.ffs. The more children who are in a class the more spread the more bubble burst. Frount line staff they have to say home and look after there children ie nurses police firefighters . Children who are on uc won’t be in school for ages because off the spread

LonelyandLost80 · 06/01/2021 00:49

Holy Christ - I should proofread first - I’m in bed exhausted but can’t sleep! Apologies 🤦‍♀️

Kokeshi123 · 06/01/2021 00:50

I think a big difference this time is the scale of the economic crisis we are facing has become clear, meaning that people who did their best to muddle through last time are now prioritizing their ability to work efficiently this time because they are shit scared of losing their jobs.

RedToothBrush · 06/01/2021 00:51

Is there anyone who cant blag they are keyworkers?

DH could im sure.

Its turned into not 'what is the responsible thing to do?' but into 'just how far can i push the regulations and take the piss?'

happystone · 06/01/2021 00:55

My dogs a keyworker therapy dog.

happystone · 06/01/2021 00:56

Yes your right parents taking the piss I bet the teachers fucking love it. Have some people no shame

ReginaPhalangee · 06/01/2021 00:57

RedToothBrush that's it precisely. So many people playing the game. I can't sleep I'm so upset about it all. Not just us in schools, all of it.

Teachears know who the piss takers are

Flaxmeadow · 06/01/2021 00:59

Is there anyone who cant blag they are keyworkers

Blag? Someone is either a key worker or not. There are millions of key workers and there are also a lot of children classed as vulnerable or at risk, eg known to/helped by social services. Accusing parents of being "blaggers" isn't really fair

More will use it this time around and so teaching assistants will need more help than they had back in spring.

Flaxmeadow · 06/01/2021 01:00

Teachears know who the piss takers are

What? Confused

happystone · 06/01/2021 01:01

If to many kids are in school the head teacher is being irresponsible and your work place is unsafe take advice from Union.Flowers to all teachears and support staff I hope you can keep yourself and family safe I hope your in a school where parents arnt selfish with a me me me attitude.

EachDubh · 06/01/2021 01:04

It will end with full closures and those to blame will be the ones who could have kept kids home.
I have no one at home to look after my kids whilst teaching, so I am using our parents very vulnerable. So when taking a place you don't need think about those you are risking by doing so. The actual critical workers dealing with this, burst bubbles no kids in, staff's families who are going the extra mile so they can look after your kids.
Anyway it is what it is, some will suffer the selfish will gloat for most we will just keep trying to get through the day.

happystone · 06/01/2021 01:05

Flexmeadpw. Piss takers such a long list my dog is one. Teachers need not many children in to stop spread. Everyone is a keyworker with the list.

Fucket · 06/01/2021 01:05

Yep the teachers will know, just like they know when the kids weren’t really sick for a a couple of days with a tummy bug, and you were actually a centre parcs. Kids talk, and don’t keep secrets, they have that naive innocence about them.

Chienloup · 06/01/2021 01:06

Yeah, my children's school had about 20 children in last time, and this time have 60. So about 30% of the whole school.
I'm a keyworker, I work in mental health services. I will have to deliver therapy sessions from my home with my 3 primary-aged children in the house - two with additional needs. My husband is not a keyworker, but is in a highly stressful job and is our main salary. We both work full-time Monday - Friday.

It will be hellish (as it was last time), but I think that the keyworker places should be reserved for single parent keyworkers, families with two keyworkers, and key workers who must work outside the home full-time. We will have tears, we will be shattered, it will be hard - but it is about everyone making sacrifices to stop transmission through contact, in order to protect those who are most vulnerable and those on the frontline NHS.

Plenty of children at our school have one parent who is a keyworker, with another on furlough on work very part-time from home who are sending their children into school on a keyworker place -it makes me so cross. Cases in our village are very high, our small community has had covid deaths in the last two weeks, and yet they are sending their children in for an easy life. Fuck them.

JerichosPenisInADeadChickHat · 06/01/2021 01:09

We are both key workers but have never used a key worker place because we are able to work around each other.

This thread though is making me wonder if I'm doing my kids a disservice. Are 75% of their classmates getting an education at school while I try my best (not great) to homeschool?

MrsFezziwig · 06/01/2021 01:10

@Billie18
Does seem very unfair on the 50 that are not allowed to attend. After nearly a year of messed up schooling and isolation there is an argument that all children count as vulnerable and if parents work to support their family isn't that essential? Maybe they could all be admitted on these grounds? Would be good for the children and no doubt easier for the staff than having to prepare and monitor two separate forms of educational delivery?

Or in other words don’t close the schools? Nice try.

ClaireP20 · 06/01/2021 01:10

@SnoozyBoozy

I'd be inclined to think that your school hasn't been very stringent on the keyworker requirements. Are they allowing children of households with just one keyworker?
Exactly....
happystone · 06/01/2021 01:11

I won’t to know what all the “Keyworkers “ will do when bubbles keep bursting. O I know work from home. The nurse police can’t work from home they have to stay home and not work
