Whitty saying we'll still have restrictions next winter

Fan-fucking-tastic. And I don't swear. Honestly don't know how I'm going to get through this.

@JinglingHellsBells nope, still think that's what he meant but if it helps others to think it'll get better, that's their call. I'm just concentrating on staying alive with these feelings of hopelessness thanks.

It's also a message that's been repeated on the BBC and other news pages so it isn't my personal over-reaction, much as you'd like it to be. It might be a 'may' but he didn't need to say anything, so the fact that he said it at all means he thinks we need to know, which means he thinks it's more likely than not. I never said we'd still be in lockdown, just that there'd be restrictions. And any restrictions at all next winter is just too much for me.

Delatron · 06/01/2021 10:16

He said ‘minor restrictions’.
What we have at the moment is not minor!

bathsh3ba · 06/01/2021 10:16

You can cope with minor restrictions next winter. I can't.

What bollocks. Britain and Europe aren’t doing this for fun. They’re doing it to protect healthcare. We are in an emergency situation. I fail to see how protecting the NHS is restricting freedom of speech. It’s laughable

No your comment is laughable. Save the NHS!Grin How are you going to achieve that with no money in the pot? You really believe in the next few years the current government is going to pump money in from a defunct public purse to cover the huge backlog in spending? Listen to the language. Just before this if you remember, they were tying NHS spending to tax revenue and they have quoted this since.

I won't bother to fill you in, you're clearly behind the news. But earlier this year a legitimate mainstream newspaper had a story banned from Twitter it was shut down. It was shut down because the political affiliations of Twitter founder did not align with the story. Another radio broadcasting program was shut down by YouTube last week. Facebook founder has had to answer questions on free speech appropriation.

These people are seeing their profits soar through this crisis. They have become too wealthy and too large to be moderated by government even before this and they can donate so much money there isn't political will to do much about them anyway. And there are others. That is the very tip of the iceberg.

But keep laughing. I wish I was as blaise.

Mousehole10 · 06/01/2021 10:21

Depends how minor he means. I can cope with limits on gathering numbers (under 50 for example) and wearing masks in shops. I can’t cope with not being allowed to see friends and family.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 06/01/2021 10:22

The reality is you will have to.

You sound so drowned in it all. Do you have anyone to talk it through with? More a counsellor than friend, someone who will not judge you or suggest stupid things that only annoy you more?

Can anyone explain to me why the fact hospitals are ALWAYs full this time of year isn’t usually a disaster?

The government get absolutely pasted for making promises they can't keep. Boris said he hoped it would be over in 12 weeks and the nation heard 'I PROMISE YOU, IT WILL BE OVER IN 12 WEEKS. ITS GOING AWAY. FACT!' Then were furious that the pandemic didn't go away.

They absolutely cannot give false assurances, it creates so much rage and lack of trust.

Whitty is a scientist, not a politician. He has to tell it as it is. I actually found him very calm and reassuring, I felt much better after hearing what he said. We have vaccines now, and the vaccines should be conducted by next winter so we don't need to face a ghastly lockdown ever again.

But there might be some restrictions if there's a need in winter. Beats the hell out of what we're living with now.

I'm genuinely sorry you live with anxiety, lots of others do too, including me. But neither the gvt nor their advisers have a duty to avoid triggering anxiety. We need honesty from them, sorry.

Assuming that was a real question...

... anticipated rise in use vs. unknown rise in use ON TOP of the usual rates

Actualy, on second reading. Apologies @Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow

I am in "Fuck your stupidty, covidiot" mode. It has coloured my reading ability.

You are right. The usual pattern of hospitals declaring emergencies is shocking and SHOULD be a national emergency!

MillieVanilla · 06/01/2021 10:28

I would take very little notice of Whitty. The man is a yes man for Boris, total idiot.
He said we would have 500,000 deaths a day by the end of November.
The only reason I could see for winter restrictions in November onwards is because the NHS is totally screwed financially, we are facing a triple dip recession which won't be taken out on the rich mates of Boris but on public services, pensions and benefits instead, the public purse is empty and just like before they won't manage winter virus season. It will be blamed on pesky (but convenient) covid.
That and lots of nurses and doctors are on the verge of quitting or will have to go back to Europe.
I would suggest telling any elderly or vulnerable to stop being daft and have the vaccine.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 06/01/2021 10:29

Ha ha ha ha ha! Well done. State the obvious, claim the man is a schill and call doubt on covid being real.

My hat is off to you... so much stupidity in such a short post!

ineedaholidaynow · 06/01/2021 10:30

Because it isn't usually so many hospitals at the same time, so if one in particular is struggling then they can move patients to another local hospital. This isn't possible now, if patients are having to be moved it is much further afield. This uses up ambulance time, so ambulances not available for other emergencies.

More staff are off sick or isolating.

Some hospitals are reporting struggling to cope with oxygen supply, which includes the infrastructure not just the oxygen, which is important both for many COVID patients but other ones too.

At other times of crisis patients can be parked up on trolleys in corridors for hours on end but they do get treatment, this is not possible with COVID patients.

With so many COVID patients taking up ICU there are no spare paces for patients with other illnesses etc which would also require an ICU bed

Where did Chris Whitty say we would have 500,000 deaths a day?

Now now @oneglassandpuzzled Not fair picking up on mistakes...

Mumsnut · 06/01/2021 10:40

Samphire - I thought his shirt collar was looking larger than ever last night! I doubt he got much Christmas pud this year

Indeed. The MNers calling for lockdown don’t consider that though do they? With the economy destroyed there won’t BE any NHS.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 06/01/2021 10:59

There is a compromise... one that we wil all disagree with, as is usual with compromies. That's the path we have been treading.

People don’t seem to get it, but the economic implications of lockdowns mean that the nhs will not be feasible in its current form in the future. I expect it will be reduced to critical care only within the next five years.
