Would you be more or less compliant, knowing then what you know now?

Thinking back to March last year...

  • Terrifying daily images of Italians dying on hospital floors.
  • Empty supermarket shelves.
  • Thinking we'd be locked down for a few weeks and all the kids would be back to school for summer term.

I was due to get married the weekend before lockdown. We postponed it to September over safety concerns. If I'd known then what I know now, I would have just gone ahead.

How about you?

I’d be the same as I am which is follow the rules but I would have let dc finish that last school week in March. Not that it matters much now.

jumpingwithjoy · 05/01/2021 19:45

@middleager I can remember being "brave" enough to order our first takeaway and doing exactly the same - oh the embarrassment when I look back now 😳😳😳😳😳

GhostPepperTears · 05/01/2021 19:47

Same than, same now, same in the future. I wfh, mainly shop online but with occasional shop-vists when necessry and always use masks and sanitiser, don't visit anyone, don't have visitors, walk the dog twice a day as far away from humans as possible (this last bit is less to do with covid and more to do with the dog being reactive).

I really do miss the family I have not seen properly for months.

Oh, I suppose I did wipe down all the delivered shopping back in March. I've give that up and wouldn't do it again.

fmlfmlfmlfm · 05/01/2021 19:52

I'd have bought shares in face masks.

SpnBaby1967 · 05/01/2021 19:53

I would have been less worried, and much like now would have followed the rules. But much like now I would think the rules are a bloody joke and been incredibly pissed off at them and probably looked for any manner to bend them, much like I do now.

Hardbackwriter · 05/01/2021 19:55

I wish I'd taken fuller advantage of the lifting of restrictions in the summer. At the time, stupidly, I thought that they would be lifted further not that it would be such a brief window... I did have a couple of meals out, trips to the pub, etc and I did see quite a lot of my family but I wish I'd seen a lot more of my friends and sort of stored up some relaxed fun to see me through this winter!

Allmyfavouritepeople · 05/01/2021 19:56

I'd have visited family in the summer. Meant to be staying with them but we were tier 3 so it wasn't allowed. Of course if we'd have paid to stay somewhere that would have been different....

I'd have done more recreation activities in general last year. We'll have been in tier 3 or lockdown for an entire year by March and whilst I'm not bored due to working I am ready for some new life experiences.

MsMeNz · 05/01/2021 19:57

Was compliant then same now. However as another poster mentioned I'm not no longer disinfecting every price of mail and every price of shopping that comes through the door.

Umbridge34 · 05/01/2021 19:59

Only thing I would do different is not let my self have a complete breakdown in tescos after all the shelves were empty, straw the broke the camels back but it was useless

BringPizza · 05/01/2021 20:05

I've been compliant from the start, I would be compliant again, I know I've done my bit for everyone else. This is not dragging on and on because of the people who are following the rules.

YouLikeTheBadOnesToo · 05/01/2021 20:11

I would have followed the rules still, the same as I am now. I would she been far less scared though. I remember when we had our first outbreak at work. I was terrified. DH and I seriously discussed sending ds to stay with his grandparents to protect him. It just seems madness now.

Cindy87 · 05/01/2021 20:21

I would not have deprived my children of seeing my parents and vice versa. Now we are bubbled it makes so much more sense. We are one household, 2 houses. So much more humane.

Misandrylovescompany · 05/01/2021 20:27

I would have done exactly the same because I’m not a selfish asocial asshole. Yes it has cost me emotionally but it’s worth it. If only other people felt the same. I despair for this country and how selfish so many people are, I really do.

Vitaminsss · 05/01/2021 20:28

Definitely wish I made the most of summer! I too thought restrictions would ease more eg shop fitting rooms reopened. Cannot believe TOPSHOP Oxford street has permanently closed - would have definitely had one last visit (used to work there!)

Eat out to help out feels like a lifetime ago, as my area banned eating out as soon as it ended. As if we could actually eat inside restaurants??

Vitaminsss · 05/01/2021 20:30

My birthday is imminent - last year I had to ignore it as it was the beginning of lockdown and bigger things to deal with etc. Certainly won’t be doing that this year! (I don’t plan on having an underground rave - don’t worry! Maybe a nice drive)

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 05/01/2021 20:30

Child would have gone as a KW child from the beginning. Would have gone abroad in the summer holidays. Would have seriously considered leaving my job in the summer too.

kowari · 05/01/2021 20:33

Definitely wish I made the most of summer! Same here. My mental health was in tatters after lockdown, with my young teen home alone while I worked, disengaged from school and friends and becoming more and more withdrawn. I wish I had just booked a week somewhere when we could and just got away, even though I didn't really have the motivation to do it.

yeOldeTrout · 05/01/2021 20:39

I don't watch TV so I've only heard about terrible images from Italy.

I'm complying perfectly with the laws now because they are easier to comply with now. I follow guidance as well now as ever. i am just as afraid of the Lockdown harms as ever -- have never worried about virus making me or most people sick, though.

Wakeupin2022 · 05/01/2021 20:44

I would be as compliant as I am now (which is very compliant, because quite frankly I am a decent person who is prepared to make sacrifices for the general good.

Its a real kick in the gut though when others are not prepared too.

Just seeing some of the KW threads and I would love my kids to be in school, and even though I could argue for a place, it just doesn't seem right as I am at home.

The selfishness of people is going to prolong the school closures impacting my children yet still I will be the gullible idiot who follows the rules.

Hardbackwriter · 05/01/2021 20:45

I would be as compliant as I am now (which is very compliant, because quite frankly I am a decent person who is prepared to make sacrifices for the general good.

And so modest, too!

Scottishgirl85 · 05/01/2021 20:50

Back in March we had no cases locally and not even that many in the county. Now we have so many but people are very relaxed. For my area I wish we hadn't had to be so strict 1st time round, so people focused more this time...

Wakeupin2022 · 05/01/2021 20:51

Hard

Yep Grin

sortmylifeoutplease · 05/01/2021 20:52

I would have been less compliant and met up with family as we had all essentially been isolating. I'd have ignored rule of six for baby and preschooler so that we weren't so isolated. I'd have tried harder to find some baby groups in the summer. Id have let kids mix on sunny days outside.

shinynewapple2021 · 05/01/2021 21:04

The same I think . I was very cautious early on, and am again now. However I did manage to make the most of the summer, went away for a few UK breaks, meals out and met outdoors with a couple of my friends .

The only people we saw indoors (during the summer when we could) were DS and his GF and even then we sat away from them and mainly in the garden when the weather was nice, although they did join us for a couple of breaks away I'm pretty sure that was 'allowed' at the time .

Baileysforchristmas · 05/01/2021 21:16

I have stuck to the rules, I made the most of the summer, I went out once a week with friends for a meal, I had family round in the garden for bbq, we went away to the Cotswolds for a few days. I went shopping in London and out for lunch. I was in a restaurant in London in December and went to the British museum just before we were put in tier 4. I never washed my shopping bags. I would do exactly the same again. I have stuck to the rules but have always done as much as I possibly can within the rules.
