How do you think this will end now?

Sorry if there's been a post on here already, I can't see it.
So if we vaccinate all the groups he said by February.
What do you think will happen next?

Will there ever be a need for lockdowns again do you think?

Will summer be relatively normal...

Not anxious about it, but I do keep seeing people online like Neil Clark who keep saying this will be life forever. Honestly can't see that, nor understand it.

OP posts:
marshmallowfluffy · 04/01/2021 23:07

If they vaccinate at the current rate, they'll reach the goal of vaccinating those 4 groups much later this year so February is a pop dream like the 12 weeks he cited last year.

Eventually they will realise ZeroCovid is the only way. New Zealand, Vietnam, China etc realised this quickly & now enjoy normal full lives & economic growth albeit with strict border controls.
In Europe & esp U.K. we are learning the hard way - you cannot “live with this virus” because your healthcare system will collapse & rampant transmission means the emergence of new variants that will escape vaccines & infection-acquired antibodies.
So the question is ZeroCovid now, or do we need another year of repeated lockdowns & our economy being wrecked, mental health ruined & kids lives being fucked up before we wake up & deal with this once & for all?

Think it's a bit too late in the day for that. I don't think you realise just how many essential workers there are. I'm one actually although a lot of people don't think accountants are. But just imagine how long lockdown would last once people stop getting their furlough payments.

And China??? Don't make me fucking laugh 🙄

PurpleFlower1983 · 04/01/2021 23:19

They would have to vaccinate over 2 million per week to meet the February deadline, they’re currently managing 0.3 million. I think Easter is more realistic.

WallopDollop · 04/01/2021 23:21

Oh for goodness sake. Of course it's not going to last forever.

Whether that's by this summer, I don't know. But people saying they don't think this will ever end are being ridiculous imo. Of course it will.

ovaldressing · 04/01/2021 23:22

I'm quite pessimistic and I don't think this round of vaccines will improve things. I think other mutations will spring up and we will always be one step behind. The vaccinations might be able to be modified but then they'd have to go back and vaccinate all the people who had the previous one.

Or, even if things do get better with Covid 19, another pandemic will arrive and it will make this one look tame. I can just imagine telling my grandchildren, "Oh, I remember what a strange year it was with the first pandemic..."

Bagelsandbrie · 04/01/2021 23:24

I want to be optimistic but I’m scared of the virus mutating again and vaccines not working. But then saying that they managed to pop these ones out quick enough.

I miss the old world.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 04/01/2021 23:32

the virus will be under control by the end of the year

some of form of restrictions - social distancing and mask wearing for example - will be enforced for another 2-3 years at least

no major outdoor festivals or sporting events with crowds in 2021

mass unemployment by the summer sparking riots and economic ruin that will continue for a decade or so

mac12 · 04/01/2021 23:39

China, why the laugh? Pretty much covid free. Yeah, a brutal lockdown in Hubei province that we couldn’t & shouldn’t tolerate here but it is certainly back to normal life - families, parties, sporting events & economic growth. We have fucking dust right now.
We should be looking at what worked in other countries (Taiwan, South Korea, NZ etc) that can be adapted & made to work here.

QualityRoads · 04/01/2021 23:42

I'd started to write my speculations but they were so pessimistic that I deleted them. Burying my head in the sand a la Boris.

Misty9 · 04/01/2021 23:43

I've been pretty relaxed and optimistic about all this. Until now. Now I feel quite worried about what's coming down the line. The pandemic and associated deaths are one thing. The fallout from this is another entirely. People talk of a mental health crisis now? This is a walk in the park compared to what's coming with unemployment and economic stagnation. Never mind a lost generation of young people Sad. And all in the context of a public sector which was pretty f*cked before the pandemic... People don't tend to collapse until after the crisis has passed. I work in mental health and I'm worried Sad

I also don't think this will be the last pandemic in our lifetimes. We've messed with the planet too much.

Layladylay234 · 04/01/2021 23:47

@FortunesFavour

I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.
Oh I love this..Thanks for a laugh in the middle of a really shitty night. Aliens, right?
Swearlikemalcolmtucker · 04/01/2021 23:47

The language hAs definitely changed. Lots of ifs now. Which could be arse covering. But between that and the state of Boris who looks like he’s aged about twenty years, I think they know they’ve made a colossal fuck up they can’t fix and are now panicking and clutching at straws.
I don’t expect to see schools opening in feb and I think a version of lockdown will remain in place until the majority are vaccinated.

I was feeling optimistic. I’m not now especially with the South African strain that is apparently causing worry because there’s concern the vaccines work against it.

The only small Hope I have is that if it mutates enough it will become much milder and the pandemic will gradually end that way as others have in history. But Spanish flu took at least two years I believe

Icantstopeatinglol · 04/01/2021 23:51

The pandemic comes from encroachment onto other areas we haven’t before and mixing with animals causing these leaps of viruses. According to experts though this has been well overdue and were going through it now and it’s shit. I definitely don’t think this is forever. The vaccines will help and they might need adjusting just like the flu vaccine but we will get back to normal.
The fallout from the economy being battered will have an impact for some time.

Elephant4 · 04/01/2021 23:59

Well - everything I think and feel has been said - by those who look on the negative side. Which I'm sure is the realistic side.

I can cope with this - just about. I've been through worse.

It's my kids - all the kids - I'm worried for.

Whatnext2018 · 05/01/2021 00:01

Shit, this all makes for horrific reading. If this isn’t going to end or there are more viruses to come, really what’s the point. Feeling scared and depressed for my toddler daughters future.

SpikySara · 05/01/2021 00:08

If the situation isn’t resolved by this time next year I’m going to emigrate to New Zealand. Virtually no restrictions there.

Flowers

Please remember that no one on this site knows what is going to happen. Plenty of people have much more optimism for the future. Posters here aren't experts and no one has a crystal ball.

Ivytheterrible79 · 05/01/2021 00:22

My son just asked me if tier 6 is where they just kill us all.

Anything possible at this rate.

You won't be allowed in. All their borders are shut, aren't they?

LaurieFairyCake · 05/01/2021 00:33

I'm getting a gnawing suspicion we're fucked - I've had this thought for about 2 weeks

Im starting to think this is pretty much a one way train...

I'm rarely wrong, I'm hoping I am wrong

SpikySara · 05/01/2021 00:34

They had the balls to do what the UK government was afraid to: closed the borders. It’s by far the safest place to be when the next pandemic arrives. Wait till Covid eases a bit and get over to NZ before the next pandemic (and there will be another as long as people keep eating wildlife).

Flaxmeadow · 05/01/2021 00:42

Better testing.

If an instant, easy, cheap, test can be developed then this will be a massive game changer. It would mean that we could be allowed in most places we are not allowed in now.

Donuts000 · 05/01/2021 00:46

I don't think this kind of speculation is good for anyone's mental health, vulnerable people reading this could really do something desperate.
We can only deal with one day at a time and things are changing so fast who knows we may get more vaccines available etc
There is no point worrying about things you have no control over, do your best to stay safe and hang in there. There can be unexpected positive things that happen too
