What does total lockdown mean? Schools off?

Do we think the schools are going to be off? I know we haven’t got long to wait until the announcement but is that what this national lockdown means? Boz seemed hell bent on keeping them open. Thanks.

@SendMeHome
Ah thanks, could not see it before

SendMeHome · 04/01/2021 17:19

No worries, @emptydreamer! They seem to be shuffling it about a lot, so I'm not sure if they're adding to it.

Popcornriver · 04/01/2021 17:24

He could of course have only mentioned his regret of primaries closing and saying how important he believes face to face learning is so he can come out and say closing them was the last resort and they had no choice to prevent some of the backlash from those insisting they stay open for all. Guess we'll all know soon enough but if they remain open and I'm only allowed outside for a hour a day for exercise, there is no chance my children will be attending. Lots of reports from my area of parents keeping children home today in the schools that opened.

UneFoisAuChalet · 04/01/2021 17:43

Well, I went in to teach today. I would say about 10 kids in each class were kept home. It was lovely to see them but what was the point virus wise? We just mixed after two weeks away. The kids were happy though.

It’s unfortunate that we are being held ransom by an inept government. I don’t know if I’ll be in tomorrow to see my class and I don’t know if my sons are going to school tomorrow. It’s this uncertainty that is causing mental health issues. If we were reassured as a nation maybe we would have confidence in the measures and the future.

Manteo · 04/01/2021 17:56

@Cuppaand2biscuits

They did do that way in March, announced on Wednesday that they would close end of day Friday. But the difference was children were already mixing in school. Seems ridiculous to send them back for part of the week when they have been apart from classmates for 2 weeks.
My DD has been in school already today though.

Schools closed to Feb at earliest, full lockdown like March

EeeehElsie · 04/01/2021 18:20

I wonder if they'll redefine what constitutes an essential retailer? It's silly thing I know, but we have a lovely local cafe which pivoted to become a craft beer off licence at the start of LD1. A couple of drinks from there a week were a real treat and kept us sane (genuinely not an overstatement, me and DH turned part of our kitchen into a bar area and 'met' for drinks on a Friday and it helped us to decompress and not think about all the shit for a few hours). We've not been to a bar since March, even when they reopened in the summer, because we love ours so much!

Flyonawalk · 04/01/2021 18:20

Surely not, though I guess anything is possible.

Genuine question to those who support lockdown - presumably people who support it think it will work, but why would it when the first two lockdowns didn’t?

I don’t think they think at all actually. They’re too busy screaming “lockdown lockdown close the schools” to give it any serious thought.
tootyfruitypickle · 04/01/2021 18:24

BBC also saying schools definitely closed.

Only other options to add are closing workplaces like factories etc , like in March.

The first one definitely worked, in that it brought down infection rates and reduced pressure on the NHS (which was the aim). Lockdowns aren't intended to eradicate Covid - that ship sailed in early March, possibly even late February. It's endemic now and isn't going anywhere.
cyclingmad · 04/01/2021 18:27

No point speculating, just wait for official announcement and details

Flyonawalk · 04/01/2021 18:27

@Bagamoyo1 that is depressingly possible. I think you’ve hit the nail on the head.

Flyonawalk · 04/01/2021 18:29

@EeeehElsie I think we’re using different definitions of ‘worked’. I wouldn’t say that the first lockdown (or the second) left us with a working, educating society. To me this means that lockdown is a failed policy and that it didn’t work.

E1ffelTower · 04/01/2021 18:29

@SendMeHome it was never an hour for exercise in England, that was just something people made up.

Wakemeuuuup · 04/01/2021 18:30

What will they do about exams. My ds is due to take his mocks before Feb half term. If they cancel exams and he hasn't done mocks how will he get a grade.

Equally how can do exams if they're missing another 1/2 term of school

reformedcharacters · 04/01/2021 18:30

The only way to close schools is to close workplaces, the working class have been screwed by the unions.

Food manufacturing, hospitals and supermarkets should kick and scream and refuse to go to work as nowhere is guaranteed safe.

Jetatyeovilaerodrome · 04/01/2021 18:31

Why do people keep saying 'lockdown doesn't work'?

It worked to get the numbers right down March-July last year. Thats what it's for. It's not about 'eradicating Covid' it's about getting the numbers to a manageable level. Which we now need to do until enough people have been vaccinated to take over from lockdown to keep the numbers manageable.

Why is this so hard to understand?

Exactly. It's there for everyone to see in graphs. Don't know why it's so difficult to see or understand..
BathFullOfEels · 04/01/2021 18:35

I’ve received an email from my kids primary school (they had their first day back today) saying that they were told (didn’t say who by) they will be closed until after February half term.

I could cry. I can’t do this again.

noblegiraffe · 04/01/2021 18:39

Why do people keep saying 'lockdown doesn't work'?

Because they are lockdown sceptics. They also tend to say stuff like ‘we need to learn to live with the virus’. They also used to claim that vaccines were a decade away and there was no point in waiting for them to save us.

They now wang on about there being no evidence that vaccines stop transmission instead (there’s also no evidence that they don’t, the data wasn’t collected, so they are taking the worst possible position).

They want life back to normal for themselves and anyone worried about covid to lock themselves away.

cptartapp · 04/01/2021 18:42

I hope they keep orthodontists open. My two will be married with kids by the time they get their braces off.
DS1 has had his on that long, they've lost track of whether his teeth should be being pulled backwards or forwards Confused

Lifeispassingby · 04/01/2021 18:43

@noblegiraffe primaries in tier 4 are not shut. Am wondering what else they can do for tier 4 apart from schools and nurseries??
