Do you think the likes of home bargains/b&m need to close?

I don't understand why they are open.
Keep the supermarkets open (obviously ) but the majority of people don't go in home bargains etc for food so just close them.
They don't need to be open.

@gannett

I have to say mask-wearing is pretty good where I am too, and strict numbers in supermarkets makes SD easy.

The data also suggests that surface transmission is way less of a factor than aerosol/droplets transmission. I go into supermarkets with clean hands, am careful not to touch my face while I'm in there, and wash my hands when I get home, and I'm happy with that.

Yes, I still think the Hands Face Space thing is the best protection we have. I don't know about masks because people keep saying they do nothing. But if someone accidentally sneezes in my personal space and we are both wearing masks then isn't that better than not?

@BarbaraofSeville

If people truly want to freeze their tits off for half an hour outside just to have a mooch around, they can have at it

I find it hard to believe that there are people who are that bored that they see going for a look round Home Bargains as an interesting way to pass the time, but if there are, they are just making the queues longer for people who need to go in there to do their food shop.

Hopefully if people aren't going in there for anything in particular that they need within the next day or two, they won't bother joining the queue and just do something else instead.

I think people will do it under the 'there's nothing else to do' argument. Family outing to Home Bargains is all they have. Sad

I’m going to home bargain today.
They sell chopped chilli in jars 69p, minced garlic too.
Essential for my cooking.
I might also get some stationery - essential if you have school aged dc. I will continue to support their business - started in Liverpool. Their price points are at my level. I might even get a diamanté photo frame to cheer up my dd who is upset about not being in school.

I don't know if closing them is necessary and I would thing there's the risk of driving greater traffic to supermarkets.

But there definitely needs to be much tighter controls on the number of people in shops.

I think the deterrant will be if you can only be 1 of 10 people (for example) and have to queue for an hour or so.

I remember the first lockdown the thing that made me shop effectively was not being able to nip into Aldi in 10 minutes on my way home from work whoever I wanted.

I learnt to make far less trips!

And I think people are less likely to go for a day trip and something to do if you spent most of it in a queue - resulting in less queuing because on,h the people who actually needed to go - would.

Sparklingbrook · 05/01/2021 10:06

The first lockdown it was kind of ok to be queuing in the boiling hot sunshine but you wouldn't want to be doing it now.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 05/01/2021 13:55

@gannet ours all did but not so much now , aldi has traffic light and local tesco express sometimes has a que but supermarkets weren't before xmas , haven't been in to one since xmas so not sure on them now

Springersrock · 05/01/2021 14:39

Do these shops not limit how many people can be inside at once? All the supermarkets round here do

All shops did here at the beginning

Now the only shops with staff on the doors cleaning trolley handles and limiting numbers are the likes of Home Bargains, B&M and The Range. The supermarkets haven’t been for months

Fortherosesjoni70 · 05/01/2021 15:37

Home bargains NEVER did here.
It was packed in April with people. I was shocked

Why should it close?

It sells essential goods. Food, medication, toiletries, pet supplies etc.

Tenyearsgone · 05/01/2021 15:56

There are still queues here at Home Bargains and B & M.

The worst place I visited was M & S Food. It was dreadful. I actually complained to the Manager. My daughter also did a Mystery Shop there and was appalled at the lack of distancing inside the store.

Same! And we also complained, it was so bad. Wonder if it's the same branch or a general problem with them!
Indecisive12 · 05/01/2021 16:13

Also felt most unsafe in M&S food, no distancing whatsoever. Staff weaving in and out. No one ways. Haven’t been since July.

Comefromaway · 05/01/2021 16:26

At the checkout I actually asked the woman behind me who started to load her shopping onto the belt directly behind mine to please stand back at the 2 metre marker and the cashier intervened to tell me that she was allowed to put her shopping and stand there, even though it meant her having to stand right next to me. (Cashier had not started to scan my shopping)

MrsDThomas · 05/01/2021 16:39

Essential shopping in wales isnt as limited as it was in November. I went to tesco thus afternoon and bough tealights, candles and knickers.
common sense at last.
