Do you think the likes of home bargains/b&m need to close?

I don't understand why they are open.
Keep the supermarkets open (obviously ) but the majority of people don't go in home bargains etc for food so just close them.
They don't need to be open.

I can't get past someone saying 'cut an adult coat down for a child'

That is one of the most ridiculous things I've read in this whole sorry saga.

I really think we should make a point of saving these posts - along with the one where someone was seriously suggesting people be paid to inform the police if their neighbours have 'too many' guests on Christmas Day - because otherwise people will have a hard time believing the sheer insanity of it all, and just how easy it has been to get people to turn on one another.

Blimey, either yours is vastly different to our nearest one or you have an incredibly shit diet!!🤣
Ours only sells tins& crap(biscuits, crisps, sweets, energy drinks) and it has a tiny fridge with milk & cheese.
There's not a vegetable or bit of fruit in sight.

Yeah right. because pasta, rice, tinned goods, spices, dried goods, cereal, toilet roll, toiletries, washing powder, washing liquid etc don't constitute part of shopping? Hmm Fruit & veg I buy from the supermarket, but thanks for your concern for my diet. Hmm

NeverEnoughTea · 04/01/2021 19:55

@IcedPurple I was referring to Ryman and similar.

Ravenesque · 04/01/2021 20:40

I don't have a B&M anywhere near me but I do have a Wilkos who stayed open last time and I hope they do again. There are things I can get in there far cheaper than I can get in any of the nearby supermarkets (including online shopping at supermarkets). I really don't give a damn if someone goes in there and buys a cushion or a toy or a throw along with their essentials.

StatisticalSense · 04/01/2021 20:48

@WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants
When this is over maybe have another look at the contents of many of those tins (hint: fruit and veg are in many of them).

GabsAlot · 04/01/2021 20:51

anyone know if the shops are closing or is he still letting that slide

category12 · 04/01/2021 20:52

It's not letting it slide - they sell food, fgs.

Never said they didn't, but it's not fresh food.

When we had small pets I used to buy all their food, straw etc from Wilko's, much cheaper than supermarkets or the likes of of Pets at Home.

We have a smallish local Home Bargains, there's only 1 aisle of candles, furnishings etc, the rest is toiletries, cleaning products and food (the latter includes a small but decent selection of fruit and veg, plus fresh meats, cheeses, milk, yoghurt etc. HB is on the edge of an estate where a lot of people are on low incomes/ don't have cars. it's the only food shop within walking distance for them. I don't see the harm in it staying open, indeed it would be hard on those families if it closed.

DenisetheMenace · 04/01/2021 21:01

A lot of people have no option but to do their essential shopping there, they can’t afford standard supermarkets, even the so-called discounters. HB is much cheaper.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 04/01/2021 21:02

@vanillandhoney

Ours only sells tins& crap(biscuits, crisps, sweets, energy drinks) and it has a tiny fridge with milk & cheese.

There's not a vegetable or bit of fruit in sight.

Ours has bread, cereal, milk, cheese, two freezer aisles with plenty of frozen fruit and vegetables, tinned fruit and veg, soup, fresh meat and desserts, soft drinks, alcohol, fruit juice - as well as biscuits, sweets, chocolates and other things.

I would say it has about six-eight aisles dedicated to food. That's B&M. Home Bargains has a smaller selection but still maybe 2-3 aisles of food.

That's very different to our nearest one!!

As I said, people use them fir genuine fiid/cleaning/pet supplies so they should stay open, but I think people should be mindful if not pissing about in the fluffy cushion aisles touching everything and making the shop busier than it needs to be, putting other people at risk.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 04/01/2021 21:57

Also home bargains and b & m should be shut down long term as I go in there for some dettol and it tends to cost me £50

If the shops are crowded the solution is simple - reduce allowed numbers. Which will mean queues outside, as occurred in lockdown 1, which will deter people from recreational shopping trips. (Which are illegal, but it's a difficult law to enforce.)

I think banning shops from selling what government bureaucrats deem "not essential" will backfire. Wales tried that and it was deeply unpopular. As previous posters have explained it's likely to affect vulnerable people the most. (And pets). There are a myriad reasons I might need clothes, kitchenwares, appliances, and so on and be unable to order online.

Billie18 · 04/01/2021 22:21

Will have more time for shopping as can't do much else so will try out all the essential shops in my area to make things more fun. I do have plentiful cushions but none of them are fluffy. I've never been to B&M Bargains I wonder if they might stock them?

dementedpixie · 04/01/2021 22:24

The Range would be more likely to have them

Thank you. Just checked and I do have a branch of the Range nearby. I've never been so looking forward to checking them out Smile
Notnownotneverever · 04/01/2021 22:33

I am less worried about B&M/Home Bargains, etc but so think garden centres should be click and collect only to stop people popping for a nice little stroll round as a trip out.

Bananaman123 · 04/01/2021 22:34

A lot of people cant afford supermarkets so need to shop in b and m, home bargains and poundland for food. My food bill has doubled because im not going to these shops any longer and just doing online grocery shopping.

Heyahun · 04/01/2021 22:37

The more shops that close the more full and busy the supermarkets get as people go out to the shops just for something to do tbh

JaceLancs · 04/01/2021 22:40

I buy a lot of store cupboard staples at B n M and Home Bargains, most of my cleaning products and all my pet foods
I don’t go there to browse or for leisure
Occasionally use the range or Wilko eg for lightbulbs and diy bits for repairs
Supermarket for fresh food
Iceland for freezers
I try and go shopping infrequently so maybe once a month to each non supermarket - then once a week for fresh food

Garden centres are open? Great. I suppose it's too late to pot up bulbs for spring might check the early summer ones.
Beachybeach · 04/01/2021 22:51

I would say that people should only be served if they’re buying essentials (and if they want to buy a diamanté photo frame let them).

But you’d just know that a wannabe Mrs Hinch will have a haul then buy a packet of biscuits as ‘they’re essential’.

There’s been enough time for the government to develop a ration type system to stop people from ‘popping’ to the supermarket every day.

Quaagars · 04/01/2021 22:58

I would say that people should only be served if they’re buying essentials

You can't start policing what is and isn't essential though.
Who's to say what is?
My essential won't be yours for example.
People might need paint, or maybe a cushion for a tatty armchair or something.
You don't know what some people might need.
