Have just stumbled across Taffix which scientists say reduces risk of covid by 78%. How is this not bigger news, could be an absolute game changer especially for school staff

Also doesn't the virus get in through your eyes as well as your nose?

Ozzie9523 · 04/01/2021 18:17

@Deux

On the vitamin D, you can take several days or a whole weeks worth of dose in one go. I had a diagnosed vitamin d deficiency and both doctor and pharmacist told me this as the vitamin D is stored by the body and excess isnt peed out like some other vitamins. I think there’s more about that on the vitamindcouncil website.
That’s interesting to know, I bought some but forget to take it every day as it needs to be taken with food, if I only had to remember once a week that would be much easier!
Aprilrainbow · 04/01/2021 20:01

If it worked I'm sure it would be big news, are they real scientists & not just marketing types? Always trust what you see on Twitface.

Delatron · 04/01/2021 20:15

I heard an expert recommending First Defence back in March. To use before going out on public transport etc. So I have been using it. I also use it at the sign of a tickle/cold.

No harm and it may just work.

Aprilrainbow · 04/01/2021 20:22

How do people identify an "expert" of a "scientist"?

Delatron · 04/01/2021 20:51

It’s fine to dismiss. I’ve read quite a bit about these sprays. Happy to use as they don’t cause harm and if they work then brilliant.
Worse case I’m wasting £7. Best case...

I haven’t had a cold for over a year which is unusual for me. Definitely felt like I’ve been coming down with something a few times. All anecdotal. And yes it could be down to all the social distancing too.

I’m happy to try anything sensible to avoid getting ill as long as it’s not harmful. I figure if we wait for a meta analysis on this we’ll be waiting years.

Delatron · 04/01/2021 20:52

I can’t link to any study or even remember who the ‘expert’ was.
From memory it was a doctor on BBC 5live who recommended it. Good enough for me.

weepingwillow22 · 04/01/2021 21:20

A not very independent study undertaken by p&g showed some promising results www.medicaldevice-network.com/news/pg-health-nasal-gel-tech-covid-19/

The sprays that studies have suggested might help are the ones that are a powder that turns into a gel that coats the inside of your nasal passages.

My sister (a Dr in Australia) advised me to get a zinc throat spray (strongest I could find) back in Feb when all this started to kick off. I thought it couldn’t hurt so I ordered one from Germany. My Dh had what was undeniably covid in early March (no testing at the time) and we all knew very little about the disease. Anyway we’d obviously had contact in his infectious period 😳 and I didn’t get it, or if I did I certainly had no terrible symptoms. I’d been using the spray every day. I had a sore throat, slight chest tightness and exhaustion for about a day during the time he had covid. I wonder now if it was that?!?

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 07/01/2021 23:37

@RunnerDown

Hydroxychloroquine .
VERY dangerous for diabetics & certain other conditions
JacobReesMogadishu · 07/01/2021 23:54

@Fernie6491

I read about the vitamin D supplement possibly helping so DH and I have been taking it since the end of November. A higher of dose of 4000 IU was recommended , but as we couldn't find that, so I got some with 5000 IU and we take half a tablet each daily. Not quite the amount suggested but it gives us a bit more confidence.
Just take the 5000, you’re not going to OD on that.

Or get 1000iu tablets and take 4.

SmallYappyTypeDog · 08/01/2021 00:03

I haven't taken any nasal sprays or vitamin d, instead I have drunk vast amounts of wine, way above my normal consumption. Despite my husband having covid and me working in a hospital and having a covid positive patient pull my mask off and pretty much cough in my face (they had dementia and meant no harm). I have remained negative on all tests and haven't had a single sniffle all year.

So just get pissed folks. I am proof it works.

Ahh that's the secret.

More seriously for those taking vitamin D supplements you can overdose on them as it is a fat soluble vitamin, which means your body stores it.

If you are white, healthy and not overweight, particularly if you are under 60 and pale, you will definitely overdose if you take 5000IU daily for a prolonged period.

Mumsn0t · 08/01/2021 02:37

This is true for vitamin D2 but not for D3. I've been taking 40,000 iu of D3 weekly for the last 3 years.

Remember, your body, on it's own, makes 25,000 iu of D3 in just 15 minutes of full sun.

JacobReesMogadishu · 08/01/2021 06:33

There’s no way you’d overdose on 5000iu. You can buy daily 5000iu vit d3 sprays and it says nothing about not taking it long term.

RememberSelfCompassion · 08/01/2021 06:39

Nhs says not to take more than 4000 a day.

I looked as I did a thrivs test. Im obese and know I'm deficient so obviously want to get my levels up quickly due to covis. Im scared both of overdosing.... and of not getting the levels up enough.

We cant afford releat thriva tests (got it on an introductory sale before starting vit D).

RememberSelfCompassion · 08/01/2021 09:32

Wow thats still £30. And how often would you need to repeat test do you think?

We are on v low income since covid 😔

Vitamins and minerals are considered food supplements so don't need to say you can overdose or have serious side effects by taking them.

If you have been found deficient in the past you should have at least one vitamin D test every year to check your levels if you are supplementing.

Dudley901 · 02/02/2021 10:41

I have been campaigning for the last 9 months to get Nasal sprays looked at by government. On my email list include Sir James Bethel, Stephen Hammond my MP Sir David King od Independent Sage Dido Harding, Stephen Powys . Let me tell you there is complete resistance to this technology that has been with us for 15 years with new products appearing all the time.

Dudley901 · 02/02/2021 10:43

These Nasal sprays are being deliberately suppressed by government and scientists.

longwayoff · 02/02/2021 10:51

Years ago, my GP said 'you get a lot of colds. It would help you if you rinsed your nostrils with Oraldene - the dentist stuff - after you brush your teeth'. So I have done so ever since. I think it's been useful. Definitely had fewer colds. Might be useful re Covid. But don't rely on it, please.

Goodmorninglights · 02/02/2021 10:54

Dudley901 why do you think that is? I’ve just ordered some from Boots with next day delivery, they aren’t an expensive product?
