My dp came down with very mild cold symptoms on the evening of the 28th, we were both convinced it couldn't possibly be covid as we have both been so careful during the pandemic.
We both wfh and the only contact we have with others is a weekly trip to the supermarket.
On New Year's Eve dp lost his sense of smell and taste so we decided it was best for him to get a test even though he felt fine.
This morning he received a text letting us know he is positive and we are completely stunned by this.
I just can't get my head around it, I know sometimes it's impossible to avoid but we really have been so sensible and yet a close friend of mine has been completely irresponsible, she's constantly in and out of friends and families houses and travelling up and down the county but still hasn't caught it.
I have ordered a home test for myself and dc which will arrive tomorrow although I'm convinced I'm already positive as I began having symptoms 5am this morning. I know I'm rambling but I just needed to vent I guess...
Has anyone taken a home test? What's the turnaround time?

Oh no! That must be such a shock. 😧Hope you all feel better soon.

Loubylou79 · 03/01/2021 23:38

The new strain is spreading much quicker. Unless you stay in your house, there is always a degree of risk. The supermarket is full of people and you only have to touch something a carrier has touch to catch it. Even if you opened a gate on an outdoor walk, there is the potential to catch it. You have obviously been so careful and it’s such bad luck. Really hope you get well soon.

B1rthis · 03/01/2021 23:55

How old is your DC?
Are they unschool/home educated and only seeing people at a distance of at least two metres outside too?
Otherwise, they could be the carrier.

Dc are school age but have been home with us since breaking up from school on the 18th December.

They don't really know this yet. Generally speaking surface transmission doesn't seem to be a big factor for Covid.
BananaPop2020 · 04/01/2021 00:00

My home test was back after about 40 hours

Horehound · 04/01/2021 00:00

They could still have carried it

changingnamesandkeepingsane · 04/01/2021 00:02

I imagine your kids would be more likely than a supermarket. Especially since they were asymptomatic.

StartingOver2020 · 04/01/2021 00:03

As incubation period is up to 14 days it could have been transmitted by dc. So sorry you have this worry and hope you are all better soon.

Saylethewayles · 04/01/2021 00:05

I don't know why you're so stunned given you have children at school and you go to the supermarket

Fx for a speedy recovery for you, but it really isn't much of a mystery where you got it!!!

Saylethewayles · 04/01/2021 00:06

I've done two home tests BTW and they came back fairly quickly, posted on Monday and results back 2am Wednesday.

FindHungrySamurai · 04/01/2021 00:07

Child could have contracted Covid on 17th, incubated for several days, developed it contagiously but asymptomatically, passed it to DH who incubated it and then developed symptoms. Eleven days completely fits that scenario.

BananaPop2020 · 04/01/2021 00:07

@Saylethewayles makes a good point - in a pandemic with massively rising rates of infection, why are you “stunned”?

I have Covid at the moment and my mother had a very similar reaction when I told her.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 04/01/2021 00:09

Your friend might have had it and been asymptomatic. Whether she was spreading it or not is debatable.

lljkk · 04/01/2021 00:09

I hope your family continue to have only mild symptoms & be able to put this behind you soon, OP. x

2boysand1princess · 04/01/2021 00:10

So sorry your family are in this situation, but it sounds like your DC may have bought it back from school. The incubation period is 14 days.

AcornAutumn · 04/01/2021 00:10

Not sure why the surprise

Virus gonna virus 🤷🏻‍♀️

I have taken a test, it was a postal one. Results were in within 20 hours of me posting it. It was negative, I dont know if that goes out quicker.

I'm on public transport for work and care duty for mum at least two days a week. So it doesn't surprise me at all your friend hasn't got it. It's sheer dumb luck. Though i am an obsessive hand washer and do a nasal rinse amd throat gargle when i get home (pre covid, never fancied another bout of pneumonia either).

I hope you feel better soon.

InvisibleMoonDancer · 04/01/2021 00:10

Yes I suppose you are all right. It is a bit silly to be "stunned" I think I'm just a little shocked and rather frightened that's all.
My chest is aching and after everything we see on the news day in day out you automatically think the worst...

Beebityboo · 04/01/2021 00:11

I'd be stunned if I got it tbf. The only place we go is for walks in fields and race around the co op supermarket sweep style. I think even the co op might have to go now until rates come down.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 04/01/2021 00:12

I'm Sorry, it's scary when you feel you've been so careful.

You must have been out licking people though as apparently supermarkets & schools are 'safe' 🙄🙄.

Look after yourself, get an oximeter

You need to cut down on the news. Rest, water, vitamins. You'll be reet.
BluebellsGreenbells · 04/01/2021 00:13

Except all the hundreds of children and by proxy parents my kids have mixed with at school...

Saylethewayles · 04/01/2021 00:13

I don't do the big supermarket and haven't since March. I occasionally pop to the little sainsburys but only if I need one or two things like milk or bread and can be in and out in 2 mins.

My son is reception age but I pulled him out of school early December as I care for a CV relative and can't take the risk. He certainly won't be going back for a while now.

Saylethewayles · 04/01/2021 00:15

I personally wouldn't recommend using an oximeter unless you start to feel very ill, I think they just increase anxiety.

christinarossetti19 · 04/01/2021 00:15

Yes, it's probably from your dc who has had it asymptomatically.

Hope that none of you are too ill with it.
