My dp came down with very mild cold symptoms on the evening of the 28th, we were both convinced it couldn't possibly be covid as we have both been so careful during the pandemic.
We both wfh and the only contact we have with others is a weekly trip to the supermarket.
On New Year's Eve dp lost his sense of smell and taste so we decided it was best for him to get a test even though he felt fine.
This morning he received a text letting us know he is positive and we are completely stunned by this.
I just can't get my head around it, I know sometimes it's impossible to avoid but we really have been so sensible and yet a close friend of mine has been completely irresponsible, she's constantly in and out of friends and families houses and travelling up and down the county but still hasn't caught it.
I have ordered a home test for myself and dc which will arrive tomorrow although I'm convinced I'm already positive as I began having symptoms 5am this morning. I know I'm rambling but I just needed to vent I guess...
Has anyone taken a home test? What's the turnaround time?

I got my results for a home test after 26 hours. OP I'm no expert but from what I've read some people may have natural immunity to certain viruses (like you see with TB for example) or maybe the have caught it but we're asymptomatic. Try to ignore the behaviour of others (been there, done that. Tested positive after being at home for two weeks).

Unfortunately, no matter how careful parents, staff and children are, schools are hot beds of infection - it's how Covid came into our house when we were Wfh and ordering online.

Please take care.

TheSockMonster · 04/01/2021 00:20

I hope those of you who have caught it have a very mild case and feel better soon Flowers

As others have said, it’s most likely one of your DC picked it up at school but didn’t display symptoms. Average time from infection to symptoms is around 4-5 days, with the most infectious period between day 2-3 and day 8-9 (with day 0 being the day you caught it).

So DC catches it at school on 17th, is in the very infectious period between 19th and 26th (no symptoms), DH catches it around 23rd and displays symptoms on 28th.

NotSorry · 04/01/2021 00:21

We were stunned when my DH got a positive result. He’s barely been out of the house since March and had NO symptoms. We all isolated and none of the rest of us got symptoms either. We only got tested because our county council asked us to do so if we had a secondary age child. Hope you stay well OP, good advice upthread

Understand your shock, I tested positive whilst in labour (routine swab) and was completely asymptomatic, it is hard to get your head around. Hope you all stay well/ recover soon.

CanWeHaveSnow · 04/01/2021 00:28

The children broke up on the 18th

Husband started having symptoms on 28th more than likely brought it in!

But going to the supermarket is high chance too

Shock poor you! I'm glad you had no symptoms though.
CanWeHaveSnow · 04/01/2021 00:29

Confused why you are surprised really?

BananaPop2020 · 04/01/2021 00:30

Please try not to worry too much - whilst it’s not pleasant I have been able to carry on working from home (albeit with lots of breaks) and have also completed a 2000 word uni assignment. I think it is going to take a long time to fully shift though.

CanWeHaveSnow · 04/01/2021 00:34

@Saylethewayles

Thats the point of the oxi meter...

With Covid, You dont realise how low your oxygen is, so you dont get help quick enough and by the time you show symptoms, your oxygen has been low for so long, your very ill

CloseSchoolsProtecttheNHS · 04/01/2021 00:36

I hope you feel better soon. This shows how easily it spreads from schools. There really is no way of being 'careful' if you have kids in schools. You're just sitting ducks.

Greenbks · 04/01/2021 00:40

Ok hope you guys feel better soon but my gosh OP, From the way you titled and then wrote your post I was convinced it was going to end with DP is dead. So dramatic!

CanWeHaveSnow · 04/01/2021 00:42

@Saylethewayles silent hypoxia is very real with Covid and if anyone can avoid that, they may well just keep themselves out of ICU

I wouldn't worry. I don't go to the supermarket as often as you as we try to minimise contact, and I've had to have a test for my DD before now. It's really not hard. Just take the test, let it take as long as it takes, and be responsible in the mean time.
