In the first lockdown were take aways open?

Messages today from friends about potential tier 5. Don't want to get caught up in worrying about this but one suggested that restaurants/ take aways may close. I am trying to remember if they were allowed to open in lockdown 1, I thought they were still open. But I can't quite remember.

Can anyone else remember? Thanks Smile

Yes. It was about the only thing that was open

ClarasZoo · 03/01/2021 15:27

Yes as I recall.

TurkeyTrot · 03/01/2021 15:27

Yes they were

SmidgenofaPigeon · 03/01/2021 15:27

Yes they were, and I hope they stay that way. I can’t imagine they’re responsible for much transmission.

Mrsjayy · 03/01/2021 15:27

Yes takeaway s were open.

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 03/01/2021 15:27

i had a birthday 4 weeks into lockdown in April and our favourite Indian takeaway was definitely open.

SendMeHome · 03/01/2021 15:27

Yep. Or at least they were allowed to be, it’ll be an individual decision on whether there’s enough business to justify opening.

finkking · 03/01/2021 15:28

Yes that's how I gained my paunch

Chickenfingers · 03/01/2021 15:28

Yes, it's food so is essential. There would be no need to them either.

snotnose · 03/01/2021 15:28

Yes I had 6 a week 😫

KinderWild · 03/01/2021 15:28

Thanks @dementedpixie.

A small thing I know, but they help us out - WFH/childcare/home learning, and I like being able to support local businesses.

They were allowed to be, but a lot of them closed. There was nothing to prevent McDonald’s etc closing, but they chose to.

Chickenfingers · 03/01/2021 15:29

No need to close them I mean. I absolutely want my takeaways still haha

Dementedswan · 03/01/2021 15:29

Yes, takeaways did deliveries here

KinderWild · 03/01/2021 15:30

Fab thanks all! Flowers

I can't see them being a risk either.

I asked the same as can't remember them being open!

But I'm GF so I'm so limited to what I can get and where from it's likely I just didn't notice because I can't really use them!

Newlockdownnewme · 03/01/2021 15:30

Nothing to make McDonald’s etc close, but they chose to!

(Sorry, sentence changed direction halfway through)

RedMarauder · 03/01/2021 15:31

Yes they were. I had the order one as I had no food to make a meal in and was told not to go out at all.

Wsdhgujn · 03/01/2021 15:31

There were but many didn’t in practice at least to start with both McDonald’s and coasts closed all branches nationally

Busygoingblah · 03/01/2021 15:32

Yes even in Wuhan, which had probably the strictest lockdown in the world, takeaways stayed open.

I really can’t see the tiny risk from takeaways. How else can you get food delivered to your doorstep with no advance planning in case of sudden isolation or illness? It’s also a great way of independent restaurants and pub diversifying to make some money at the moment. I’ve had some amazing takeaways over lockdown!

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 03/01/2021 15:33

In my town all the Indians stayed open and all the Chineses shut!

BlueBaubles12 · 03/01/2021 15:33

Yes, they were. I had several. I basically comfort ate my way through March to June.

RedMarauder · 03/01/2021 15:33

You reminded me my favourite chip shop wasn't open.

In the neighbourhood we thought it was because the owners are Chinese.

Wsdhgujn · 03/01/2021 15:33

Take away delivery seemed more common that take away to pick up, getting a take away coffee was impossible around us until may!

StatisticalSense · 03/01/2021 15:33

Yes. I would hope that the government would recognise that take-aways are the only source of hot food for a not insignificant number of people who are either unable to cook or lack access to the facilities needed (and are therefore more essential than just about any other business).
