When will they decide about schools?

Ffs hurry up and let parents and teachers know what is happening. I was expecting some kind of announcement today but maybe they will see what the figures are like then tweet it later via some obscure number 10 person the resident mouse. I'm autistic and struggle so much with not knowing what's happening img. Tier 4 for us and rates have doubled in a week. I won't be sending primary ds back as I'm CEV and a lone parent but I wish they'd at least give us the choice and no threats of fines. I want him in school but he needs me to be alive more then he needs to be in school for the next month or so. He isn't due back until the end of the week anyway but ffs lots of schools are due back on Monday and still don't know what's happening 🤬

Schools are no more unsafe then supermarkets!

Very glad you're not responsible for my child's health or education.

Scotland's schools have already been told what to do, but I'd stand behind any teacher refusing to work next week.

Bagamoyo1 · 02/01/2021 17:44

@SeldomFollowedIt

It’s disgusting how they are leaving parents, teachers and kids in limbo.

Just fucking let us know you twats.

I thought the government had already said what’s happening? Primaries opening, secondaries staggered. It’s the unions making a fuss that have created confusion.
Noellodee · 02/01/2021 17:44

It's not teachers who are saying that cases will rise too much if schools go back. It's the government's own scientists. The debate isn't about whether teachers are more or less safe than shop workers, it's about whether we have the national infrastructure to cope with the amount of sickness schools being open would cause.

SImple answer: No, we don't.

rothbury · 02/01/2021 17:44

@Char2015 does that include primaries?

When from? Monday?

Allispretty · 02/01/2021 17:45

@nevernotstruggling

I wish they would get on with it as the 2 week goal might be realistic if they don't open Monday
You already have a decision? I don't understand this thread Confused your also very naive to think schools will close for 2 weeks only we'll be lucky if they are back after feb half term!
bailey999 · 02/01/2021 17:46

Supermarket staff worked all through the first wave and certainly where I worked we were told not to wear masks at the beginning as it may frighten the customers. It is also very hard to socially distance, I find it very difficult when shopping myself. I actually think schools should shut and feel very sorry for teachers with no PPE etc, but there are lots of other workers who have worked right through this pandemic and had very little PPE at the start whilst lots of others could work from home etc (including lots of teachers).

Bagamoyo1 · 02/01/2021 17:47

Please can someone post the ONS page that shows that transmission is higher in schools than anywhere else.

SeldomFollowedIt · 02/01/2021 17:47

@Bagamoyo1

Doesn’t mean shit when then U turn as frequently as they do. Anyway I get it now, they won’t be saying anything it will be down to individual schools and if they have the ability to open or not.

I know a fair few teachers in my family and close circle of friends, some are going in, some have said no. It’s going to be chaotic.

MarshaBradyo · 02/01/2021 17:49

@disconnecteddrifter

Just got an email from the union advising me to not go into school this week
What percentage of union members will do it? Is it everyone or just those who want to

I’ve not been part of a union for work so not sure how it works

Remmy123 · 02/01/2021 17:49

They have decided?

disconnecteddrifter · 02/01/2021 17:52

I don't know what ill do. I'm scared it will count against me if I dont go in. I hate remote teaching live lessons half the students wont turn on camera and love being in class. However I'm worried about people not accessing hospital services as well as people getting sick and potentially dying.
Lots of cases in my school before Christmas but contained as in the spread was directly from children not social distancing outside of school, going into each other"s houses, going to second homes and loose definitions of bubbling. Most kids did not get ill but their family members did. Literally they gave it to granny and some parents hospitalized. I think ill have to make a stand even if it goes against what I feel comfortable with for the greater good. Very sad for my own children too. And trying to not be angry at people I know breaking the rules socialising indoors because they've done a risk assessment and dont think they will get ill. Yes hopefully not but you'll close the schools down when positive cases go up

poppy1973 · 02/01/2021 17:53

I have had letter come through now from NEU. Just deciding when to send it in to the Head. I will wait and see what the union says tomorrow during the union meeting.

Char2015 · 02/01/2021 17:54

@Beebityboo
I reckon councils all over England are busy writing to schools as we speak. It's already looking like they are losing control. It will look somewhat better for Gov to announce all school closures NOW before all councils have a chance to get their letters sent.

@rothbury
It's advising primary schools to move to remote learning from the 4th.

rothbury · 02/01/2021 17:55

Thanks - very sensible decision.

hedgehogger1 · 02/01/2021 17:56

SAGE have advised the government to close schools. I think they have more info than the rest of us

KeyboardWorriers · 02/01/2021 18:00

all we can do is make plans for either eventuality. Surely everyone has had to deal with this uncertainty anyway given bubbles can close

frustrationcentral · 02/01/2021 18:01

@Kjc39

It’s a good job all the supermarket staff didn’t strike and refuse to work! Schools are no more unsafe then supermarkets!
Haha, I work in a nursery school. I hope customers don't generally go and sit on the knee of a shop worker whilst crying?! Seriously this is shit for everyone, but shop workers and people working in education are not at all comparable imo
MotherForker · 02/01/2021 18:02

@Kjc39 supermarket staff are entitled to join a union and collectivise their concerns to their employer. This isn't a strike, this is a refusal to work under section 44 of the employment rights act. That applies to all people working in the UK. If you feel your supermarket or workplace is unsafe you can do the same.

As it goes action such as this is why we have the employment rights we have today.

Fizbosshoes · 02/01/2021 18:04

I'm in tier 4 and so far DS due to be in school on wed, and we have had an email today with a plan A schools open and plan B school closed. (A lot of other schools in neighbouring councils are closed)

kurtrussellsbeard · 02/01/2021 18:06

@Kjc39

What a lot of rubbish.

Thewinterofdiscontent · 02/01/2021 18:11

We have had government advice. I am concerned that vulnerable/SEND children are one of the few groups allowed back whatever happens. Surely some of these ( and often their families) are likely to have just the conditions likely to be dangerous?
Personally I think some online learning and schools opened as childcare only ( like the first lockdown ) for keyworker children is the best idea. Trying to teach when you are constantly enforcing CV rules, no extra curricular activities to back up learning and kids and staff off every 5 minutes is pointless.

Kjc39 · 02/01/2021 18:15

It’s not rubbish. And by the way I do work in a nursery school and I do have children wanting to sit on my lap!!

ivykaty44 · 02/01/2021 18:17

When the cows get milked two weeks ago on a Tuesday

covetingthepreciousthings · 02/01/2021 18:17

I thought the government had already said what’s happening? Primaries opening, secondaries staggered. It’s the unions making a fuss that have created confusion.

To be fair I think the confusion started when the government made a U turn after the original announcement and decided to close all London schools instead of just the ones on their original listing..

nevernotstruggling · 02/01/2021 18:17

I would strongly encourage supermarket staff to join usdaw or similar. They really need to.
