TheEchtMeaningofChristmas
To be fair to university staff, they've been under attack a lot lately. There's already been strikes before covid. Lots of highly qualified and experienced staff are in insecure roles with terms regularly being eroded.

There will be others in similar positions too.

SansaSnark · 02/01/2021 20:20

Part of the reason we have got here is because campaigning for PPE hasn't got us very far. Masks in corridors in secondary schools, and that's it.

There are still teachers being expressly told they can't wear masks by their SLT.

FrippEnos · 02/01/2021 20:20

and their children would have to be muzzled or wear face nappies.

SaltyAF · 02/01/2021 20:21

And from what I can see with parents refusing to consent to their DCs mask wearing on communal areas, they still don't think it's important. Neither are we allowed to sanction those who won't comply.

What is truly shocking is how many teachers seem to think teaching and the education of children is an optional frivolity.

Teachers are the only profession unprofessional enough to do this, and I think they have damaged their reputation for years to come.

Do you have any evidence to back either of these opinions up?

CoffeeCreamandSugar · 02/01/2021 20:22

@rothbury

Then you don't know anybody. My university lecturer friends have worked hundreds of extra hours to make online versions of their degrees using equipment they had to buy themselves. That's the real world of work during covid.

Hilarious. I am a University Lecturer at a RG Uni Grin

We don't get paid, we don't work. Our Union (UCU) is very helpful. You sound stupid saying things like "you don't know anyone." We don't all have to agree and we all have different experiences, but some of your comments are really silly and childish.

My husband is also a University Lecturer. He works many, many hours in the evenings unpaid.

What is your actual point? Just because you don’t work extra hours, it doesn’t mean that all University Lecturers are the same. I know my husband is not unusual as his colleagues are the same. Perhaps it depends on the specialism.

I wish my husband would take a leaf out of your book and work less!

@itsgettingweird

Justgeton you've not been reading the threads for months then or listening to unions.

Safety is what they've asked for for months. Since April when they wanted to start planning reopening.

The governments counter argument is "schools are safe"

Yet they will not release data to back this up.

And Boris himself said schools are safe, it's the mixing of households in them that's the problem Hmm

And as I read on FB the other day from a teacher that me me lol in response to this was "well we weren't worried about the buildings" Grin

Ha I knew Boris's quote reminded me of something... Miss Trunchbull: 'my idea of a perfect school, Miss Honey, is one that has no children in it at all.'
maddy68 · 02/01/2021 20:25

Why is it down tobyej teachers to ensure safety. They've closed the London tier 4 schools but not tier 4 anywhere else? Do the lives of teachers and children not matter outside London?

Let's all get behind this. The government are a shambles

CoffeeCreamandSugar · 02/01/2021 20:26

Teachers aren’t the only profession that work unpaid overtime. I used to work in the NHS and regularly worked over time. It was expected.

Seasaltyhair · 02/01/2021 20:26

@FixItUpChappie

I wish they’d just vaccinate teachers first before anyone else. We are failing a whole generation.

I agree - let's prioritize vaccinate teachers and parents with the goal of a functioning society

But as a teacher pointed out up thread, they still wouldn’t be happy as the vaccine doesn’t stop her passing the virus on to children who could pass it on to immune compromised family. ( which tbh could happen with any virus)

You can’t win.

Teachers are happy working from home and that’s where they want to be because they have been treated like shit for such a long time. Who wouldn’t want to go from being in a over subscribed class with kids that don’t listen to you, no real resources or funding to sitting in your own home in your PJs sticking work sheets and educational website links on line.

CoffeeCreamandSugar · 02/01/2021 20:27

And it wasn’t paid!

Because maybe there are areas not as bad as London Confused
dontaskforthe99 · 02/01/2021 20:28

About time, schools haven't been a safe place to work since the September return. If they had mitigated risk with blended learning, rotas, not delayed the mandating of masks in communal areas and classrooms we wouldn't be in the state we are now. The government and Williamson, put almost no resources in to protecting schools, students, staff. Support for disadvantaged students to support their learning with broadband and laptops has been woeful.

bluebeck · 02/01/2021 20:28

To be fair, I think a lot of the HSE legislation is down to unions, actually.

The Section 44 legislation relates to the Employment Rights Act 1996. Nothing to do with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1977.

I agree that trade unions have fought on behalf of workers to improve legislation around H&S and Employment Rights, but so many people seem to be jealous of those who stand up for themselves either directly or with support from trade unions.

I work in the legal profession and obviously we are renowned for accounting for every minute of our precious time and billing for it - take a leaf out of our book. As PP have pointed out, it really should not be a race to the bottom.

CoffeeCreamandSugar · 02/01/2021 20:28

And there are many areas that are just as bad. 800 in 100,000 in the area of my children’s school!

ForeverInADay · 02/01/2021 20:29

I 100% support them.

SansaSnark · 02/01/2021 20:29

Certain people hate teachers anyway, they always have.

In, say, 5 or 50 years time, I think some people will look back and praise teachers for taking action.

Honestly, parents probably need to start being nicer to teachers- at least if you value having qualified maths and science teachers, for example.

Oh I'm very sorry, I thought this was a forum for discussion not a peer review Hmm

Tier 4 doesn't mean the same everywhere.

Look at the numbers, some tier 4s have 1200 cases in 100,000, others that's 250 cases in 100,000. That's vastly different.

peardrops1 · 02/01/2021 20:34

Gogglebox20 · 02/01/2021 20:34

@Flippingnightmare
“Doctors and nurses have been going to work for the entire time in 'unsafe' conditions. So have health care assistants, care home workers, policemen, supermarket workers. SO HAVE SCHOOL WORKERS ONLY WITHOUT ANY PPE OR SOCIAL DISTANCING MEASURES. HOSPITALS AND CARE HOMES DO NOT ALLOW VISITORS. SUPERMARKET WORKERS CAN WEAR PPE, HAVE SCREENS AND CAN SOCIAL DISTANCE. GP SURGERIES PICK AND CHOOSE WHO THEY WILL SEE AND WEAR FULL PPE.

What do you think would happen if everyone in the UK tomorrow decided it was too unsafe to go to work? I think the NEU are being unbelievably reckless, it sets a precent for anyone to ow tools at any time if they feel 'unsafe'. I've felt very unsafe working in A&E on a friday night surrounded by drunks, but if I didn't turn up top work people would die. Should care home workers let elderly frail people ie in bed because it's unsafe to go in? CARE HOME WORKERS AND RESIDENTS ARE TESTED REGULARLY AND NO VISITORS ARE ALLOWED. A&E STAFF HAVE FULL PPE. TEACHERS/SCHOOL STAFF HAVE ALSO NEVER TURNED UP BUT DONT HAVE ANY PPE.

What is truly shocking is how many teachers seem to think teaching and the education of children is an optional frivolity. YOUR EVIDENCE PLEASE?

Teachers are the only profession unprofessional enough to do this, and I think they have damaged their reputation for years to come. YET YOU DEEM THEM PROFESSIONAL ENOUGH TO TEACH YOUR CHILDREN/ GRANDCHILDREN/ GOD CHILDREN AS AND WHEN IT SUITS?

What a crazy post.

Oi, bashers. Over here. It doesn't matter a jot how much you deride teachers (@Flippingnightmare I'm looking at you in particular). We've heard it all for years and particularly during the last nine months. We don't give a flying fuck what you think.

I laugh unprofessionally in your angry, ill-informed faces.
