I dont understand people celebrating school closures. This won't be for two weeks. This will be for months. I would be amazed if kids are back by the end of Easter hols. The unions won't allow it. We are talking about an entire generation of kids effectively losing two years of education. It is utterly dire and there is absolutely nothing to be glad about.

DrRamsesEmerson · 02/01/2021 13:51

Crossed posts, @PinkFondantFancy!

Ayupmeduck · 02/01/2021 13:53

@PinkFondantFancy

The hypocricy if teachers are willing to send their kids in to be cared for by someone if they're not willing to go onto schools themselves is staggering. 'But it's socially distanced' is a figleaf.
Plenty of teachers will be keeping their own children at home as they did last time I imagine. Not a single child in the key worker provision I taught belonged to a teacher. There were plenty that had a SAHP though. Perhaps you could furnish us with a list of who you would/wouldn't allow access to?
PinkFondantFancy · 02/01/2021 13:53

Are the unions also stating conditions for return to school? What case rate/death rate/alignment of moon and stars is required for 'safe'?

Kolo · 02/01/2021 13:53

Well done NEU. So pleased they're taking a stance against the government. I don't trust the government to look after my children, but I do trust their teachers.

Sinuhe · 02/01/2021 13:53

Will teachers still get paid if they refuse to attend their workplace?

(And please don't refer to online learning provision, that didn't work for many primary school age children, especially if parents still have to hold down a daytime job.)

Shitfuckoh · 02/01/2021 13:54

I have no idea how this works.

Do parents just send children on Monday & then find out if their school / class is open? Are we told before then? Is it up to each teachers whether they're going in or not?

This is a shit show - not aimed at teachers, but at Government. This is no way for teachers, parents & chilren to be treated. I have 1 school which 2 of my DC attend due to go back Monday as of Thursday we were told they were returning. Now I have no idea if they are or not.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 02/01/2021 13:54

Good for them!

Lie.

The NAHT are clear that they would like schools to close for a pause while effective mitigation measures are put in place to ensure an orderly return.

Perhaps if you would like schools to return promptly you should start supporting them.

theclockticksslowly · 02/01/2021 13:54

Fully support the teachers. It’s time the government stopped lying about schools being safe. They had the whole of original lockdown to look at ways to make schools safe but did nothing.

I hope the usforthem idiots stop bleating on. Opening schools with no changes is not ‘UsforThem’ it’s ‘teachersforus’.

Barbie222 · 02/01/2021 13:56

@DrRamsesEmerson

Hmm, so they’ll expect someone to turn up in school for their own children, but won’t do it for other people’s. Great, really principled.
No, teachers will be turning up to support key workers children so the rest of the country can continue to function?
PinkFondantFancy · 02/01/2021 13:56

I'd allow access to all children, since you ask. My children's hospital clinic appointments are happening with a plastic pinny and paper mask, to protect the children, not to protect the drs. They're in a small room, without ventilation, for prolonged periods, seeing many many families per day, making physical contact with the children.

noblegiraffe · 02/01/2021 13:57

I hope the usforthem idiots stop bleating on

They won't, they're an astroturfing organisation paid to do it.

DrRamsesEmerson · 02/01/2021 13:57

@noblegiraffe, what mitigation measures? The unions are really clear what they don’t want (to go to work and provide education- don’t talk about online learning, we had nothing marked between March and July at DD’s school). They’re not remotely clear about what, realistically, they do want.

kowari · 02/01/2021 13:57

@Ylvamoon

Fine, but PLEASE NOTIFY THE PARENTS!

I would hate the thought if my 10 year old being refused entry to school (he walks by himself).

Exactly, I hope they do or parents of older children may already be at work when children arrive at school.

It's not 2 years. Not even close.

Schools were open from September to March - 7 months

Schools have been open since September - 4 months (and if propper safety measures had been out in place there would have been far fewer bubbles isolating)

Open again from Easter (as per your GUESS) - Another 4 months.

That's 15 months of face to face learning in the 2 academic years you are talking about.

Is it ideal? No. But it's a pandemic. Ideal doesn't really come into it

Noellodee · 02/01/2021 13:58

@DrRamses The people who would be looking after teacher's children would be teachers - who wouldn't be able to do it if their own children weren't being looked after. They will be doing this so that they can also look after the children of nurses, doctors, firemen, police, refuse workers, prison officers, undertakers, farmers, power station operatives, etc.

Do you understand the importance of everyone who is not essential staying home as much as possible? Do you need someone to draw you some diagrams, explain how viruses work? Or are you just stirring up trouble for the sake of it?

I think we all know the answer.

SophieB100 · 02/01/2021 13:58

@Juststopswimming
It isn't about celebrating school closures. I'm certainly not celebrating the fact that I won't be teaching face to face from next week.
It is about the reality of the situation.
If schools go back (primary) next week, then they will close very shortly after. Either due to increases in the R number, or most likely, staff shortages. Then schools will close anyway.
There is no easy way out of this - we're in too deep now. The time has passed (September) for taking precautionary measures in schools. Cases were escalating before the Christmas holidays, and if the schools hadn't closed for the holidays, they would certainly be shut now - for the reasons outlined above.
I can't speak for all teachers, but personally I'm gutted that we can't return as normal next week (I'm High School). But the reality is that schools will close, very shortly, one way or another.

Ilovemyhairbeingstroked · 02/01/2021 13:58

Good for them - support them completely!

lcdododo · 02/01/2021 13:59

@Juststopswimming

2 years?

I've obviously been asleep for a year and missed half the pandemic Hmm

StacySoloman · 02/01/2021 13:59

@PinkFondantFancy

Yeah, except about 27 of my child's class of 30 is key worker. How's that going to work?
Seems very unlikely that 27 children have no non-keyworker parent?
Maladicta · 02/01/2021 13:59

And what about nurseries, special schools and alternative provisions? Social distancing nigh on impossible putting everyone at higher risk, vulnerable children who are often unable to access online teaching.
We managed before but had staff cases. Being in an original Tier 4 area with numbers now shooting up, saying ‘wash your hands’ a bit more doesn’t quite cut it...

princessandthedragon · 02/01/2021 13:59

@herecomesthsun

Maybe we should support them as parents Smile
And who will support me when I lose my job because I won’t be able to work with two children at home.
Oxonschools · 02/01/2021 14:00

The government needs to own it that schools aren't safe and do something about it.
