There’s a man at the entrance to the tip. AIBU to think we’ve all gone a bit mad?

I mean the entrance where you turn in to the site, not at the bays and disposal units.

He asks everyone to take the window down. Then he tells you to carry on driving... the only feasible way to drive as it’s one way. He’s been there since covid and he’s a covid Marshall according to his high vis.

What are these ridiculous covid things?! I feel like the world has gone crazy. I mean I like the chap but honestly, why?!

The other day in John Lewis there were 6 staff at the door literally pointing down the one way system...no other option to go another way. We couldn’t help but laugh as it was almost like some royal greeting... all of them lined up smiling in high vis but essentially not doing much at all —except maybe ticking the covid box form—

There is a man at the entrance to our local tip. You have to book an appointment so he is there to check your Reg number etc and he then directs you to the next available bay for parking. Even without needing an appointment it surely makes sense to have someone there? It avoids too many people driving in if there are no spaces left etc.

inquietant · 01/01/2021 08:37

Presumably if the site gets too full he stops you?

I think trying to enforce sensible behaviour is quite hard, so give the staff a break.

There are a lot of utter idiots people acting as though covid isn't serious so businesses need to enforce things.

RolandSchitt · 01/01/2021 10:38

There's been a guy at our tip for a few months, whenever it reopened after the first lockdown. They prevent too many cars going in at once, and check your ID to see if you're from the LA.

I'm guessing John Lewis might have had issues with people "not hearing" their directions about one way systems, so have decided to up the ante.

ineedaholidaynow · 01/01/2021 10:41

We have a man at ours too, he directs you to the bay you can go to and stops too many cars going in. They have reduced the number of parking bays and don’t want people parking anywhere

emilybrontescorsett · 01/01/2021 10:55

Well one tip near me had to be closed down again because of the sheer nightmare it caused by reopening. Residents in a nearby housing estate couldn't get in or out of their estate as visitors to the tip had blocked all the junctions. The council then opened it up on an appointment only basis.
Where I work we have employed a security officer and trust me we need it. Dispite having a clear notice board outside stating our building is closed except to those with an appointment, you would not believe how many people have rocked up since March and tried to walk in. The security guard asks if they have an appointnent. No they say. Well you can't come in. Why not? Read the notice. Oh but I'm here now. Read the notice. Well I know but....... You can't come in. Well what should I do? Read the notice and do as it says. Oh but I'm here now. You CAN'T COME IN. Well I've travelled from (insert highly contagious area). Stand off ensues. Member of public takes out mobile phone and calls our number as stated in the notice," Im outside your office and the security guard says I can't come in, " Yep that's correct you need to make an appointment. Oh I'm here now, can I come in? No we are extremely busy, like it has told you on the phone as I'm no doubt you are aware you need to make an appointment. Oh, ok I didn't realise I thought I could just wonder in from a highly infectious area bringing in all my germs into your essential service office..........

Timeforabiscuit · 01/01/2021 10:58

The general public are entitled arseholes as a collective.

Yes - you need marshalls.

Timeforabiscuit · 01/01/2021 11:00

@emilybrontescorsett - I had similar measures in a secured building where people pulled exactly the same nonsense - so it's reassuring covid hasn't fundamentally changed human behaviour Grin

BarbaraofSeville · 01/01/2021 11:05

Tips are appointment only so they need someone to check that the people turning up have an appointment.

I like it and it seems to be working really well here.

I don't do anything at busy times if I can help it and just go at lunchtime while WFH. I can make an appointment for same or next day or whenever I like really.

Soubriquet · 01/01/2021 11:06

That’s nothing

Our local tip have been slated very badly due to their stupid policies

Only ONE person per car. Doesn’t sound bad does it? Except if you have a baby, child or dog in the car, you’re supposed to leave them at the gate, go in and do your stuff, then come out and collect them Hmm

The tip is on a busy main road and no where suitable for children to be alone.

You’re also supposed to book your slot....but you can only bring certain items on certain days so you could end up booking multiple slots in order to do all your rubbish

Honestly, it’s ridiculous

emilybrontescorsett · 01/01/2021 11:06

We also speak to people on a daily basis and the conversation goes as follows:
Customer: Oh hello I've been trying to get through for ages now, I appreciate you are an extremely busy office but I just wanted to check that I can't come in on person and do X now. I know it says on your website to do X and Y and I know the message at the beginning of this phone call also told me to do X and Y but I wanted to check with you.
Me: Yes the information you have just heard on the phone is correct.
Customer: Well yes I thought so, but I would really like to come in and see someone in person.
Me: why?
Customer: Err well.....no reason I suppose you are busy and I understand why you don't want to be in close contact with members of the public I really do understand, but I err......Well I just thought I'd check......you know.....It's nice to speak to someone face to face. I do undetstand. Sorry to have taken up your time, you are doing a great job. I'll go on line and follow the instructions.
Me: Is there anything else I can help you with?
Customer: No it's all very clear on your website.

satnighttakeaway · 01/01/2021 11:14

My local tip is appointment only now so has a person checking you in but we'll before Covid often had someone asking what you had and directing you to the right area. Normal here but Im sure different councils do things differently.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 01/01/2021 11:14

Ours isn't, and no man at the gate either. I've been there a lot over the last few weeks and not had to queue up either. Everybody is respectful of SD as well.

makingmyway10 · 01/01/2021 11:25

I work in a school , we have signs at the entrance, big visible signs saying you can not enter without an appointment. Reminding parents that they too can not enter without an appointment. We have the same message on our website and we remind parents in a weekly email . There is another sign on the Reception entrance repeating the message. We still get people turning up and trying to walk in!! Parents bringing in a forgotten hockey sock or a a snack (I kid you not)! Random strangers who thought they could just pop in to drop off leaflets , salespeople!! Who tries to drop into school without an appointment during a pandemic! Never mind ignoring all the signs asking them not to.Angry I can see why there is a man at the tip entrance !

80sColourfulChristmas · 01/01/2021 11:29

It reminds me of those people you see outside events winding their arm round in circles to indicate "keep driving, keep driving" when you still have a mile before the entrance 😆 Well yes.......perfectly aware of how to drive thanks!!

ancientgran · 01/01/2021 11:29

There's been a man at the entrance to our tip for years. He checks what you have as some stuff is chargeable and some things you can only take a limited amount. As an example when I took all the tiles off when I did the kitchen up (about ten years ago) I told him I had x number of bags with tiles, he said that was my limit and took my reg no, name and address and said if I brought any more tiles within a certain period (can't remember how long exactly but it was months) I would be charged at trade rates.

80sColourfulChristmas · 01/01/2021 11:32

Omg they expect you to leave your baby or toddler at the entrance???? Wtf?!
Lougle · 01/01/2021 11:33

Our tip is amazing. Booked appointment slots, ANPR to ensure the staff aren't letting people in who haven't booked. Efficient staff who help you by telling you where to put stuff. A helpful hand with large items. Always cleaning, sweeping and generally maintaining the area. Absolutely great.

ptumbi · 01/01/2021 11:35

I don't really understand why Tips are closed/covid marshalled or ridiculously over cautious. The tips are outside and people are mainly in their cars, only getting out to dump stuff. No one needs to go near them, unless they have something heavy or sensitive (like asbestos) so why is our local tip shut? Why have someone demanding your window is down to speak to you? Why have an appointment - surely having a long line of cars (like normal) is completely safe?

SquareOnTheHypotenuse · 01/01/2021 11:39

We have someone at the entrance to our tip. Since CV we’re only allowed one type of waste per visit, so he asks what you’ve got then sends you to the appropriate bay. It works really well and keeps you away from the idiots who still don’t understand social distancing.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 01/01/2021 11:40

Besides Covid, they need to ensure tip users are just dumping their household waste. Builders and other commercial users have to pay and follow a different system, but small businesses sometimes try to get around that by doing repeated small loads in their wife's car etc. The guy at the gate will be looking out for familiar faces.

StitchesInChristmasTime · 01/01/2021 11:51

There’s been a man at the entrance to our local tip (or recycling centre as they like to call it) since Covid too.

There’s no appointment system, but they’re only letting a certain number of cars onto the site at once. So the man at the gate has cones blocking the entrance, which he moves when you can enter, and he asks what you’re getting rid of, and directs you to the appropriate bays. It seems to work quite well.
It’s been much nicer visiting the top since they started limiting numbers actually. It used to get uncomfortably crowded on the site pre-covid.

Thewiseoneincognito · 01/01/2021 12:03

OP fools such as yourself are why Marshall’s are needed. Some people are unable to follow rules or will deliberately go against them so these Marshall’s are a necessity

GrannieD · 01/01/2021 12:07

We have security on all entrances to the hospital telling staff to gel hands and to put masks on !

GrimSisters · 01/01/2021 12:14

No-one at the entrance to ours and, to be fair, they could do with one. Is absolute mayhem. People parking where they like. People waiting for the bay right beside the area they want to become free and blocking traffic in the meantime because heaven forbid they park in the nearest available and walk a short distance. There isn't a booking system or anything either.
It doesn't help that there are often loads of huge vans parked up as well - those who work there make a decent amount of money on the side by turning a blind eye to commercial waste or flogging off anything half decent that comes in.

MarinPrime · 01/01/2021 12:18

Only ONE person per car. Doesn’t sound bad does it? Except if you have a baby, child or dog in the car, you’re supposed to leave them at the gate, go in and do your stuff, then come out and collect them

Getting rid of stuff isn't an emergency, couldn't you wait until its convenient to go on your own?
