DH felt ill yesterday - shivery and cold. Temp was fine, then high, then fine again. Had a Lemsip and felt better. Ok this morning but kept taking temp. High again this afternoon. No cough or other symptoms but booked in for a test tomorrow. I text my friend to tell her that he was going for a test as she has to sort out the rota for work and I’ll have to isolate till he gets the results. She was really off with me and has now stopped responding. She said he should have got a test as soon as his temp was high (38), even though it went down straight after. He hasn’t seen anyone in the 48 hours before the symptoms started as he’s off work. We haven’t broken any of the lockdown rules. Surely so many people have it now that it’s not an individual’s fault if they have been careful but still picked it up?

OP posts:
JinglesWish · 31/12/2020 19:43

He should have tested sooner. I waited 5.5 days for drive through results last week (thankfully negative, but a total waste of all of our time isolating). Hope he gets his quicker!!

MaryLeeOnHigh · 31/12/2020 19:46

@HaveITheRightToHoldYou

Temp yesterday, temp today, test not until tomorrow -a delay of 2 days to get a test is the reason she’s annoyed I’m guessing, she now has to contact people to rearrange shifts. Him not seeing anyone 48 hrs before is neither here nor there, what with the incubation period.
But it’s not a 48 hour delay - realistically he wouldn’t have got a test as soon as he began having a temperature. They calculate self isolation from the time you start showing symptoms, so if he does test positive it won’t make any difference to when you get back to work.
Lazypuppy · 31/12/2020 19:54

I wouldn't get a test as soon asi got a high temp if it went back down, i would wait over night to see if i still had a temp in the morning, if so then i would order a test.

I think its frustrating when you have to isolate because he may have it, but not you -i'm not saying its wrong but employers are probably finding it hard now when so many people have to isolate

Brogues · 31/12/2020 19:55

@MaryLeeOnHigh we were surprised a few weeks ago when we could get an immediate test locally just before closing time. Appreciate that could have been an anomaly! Results back within 24 hours too.

2020isalmosthindsight · 31/12/2020 20:03

OP couldn't control another adult's willingness or unwillingness to get a test on her timetable. FFS

Onjnmoeiejducwoapy · 31/12/2020 20:13

Sounds like she is annoyed the test didn’t get booked earlier, which would have avoided this all?

opinionatedfreak · 31/12/2020 20:16

@Lazypuppy then you are daft and not following the covid guidance.

Me - spiked temp overnight. Gone by AM. Test done anyway.

Covid postive.

Whatwouldscullydo · 31/12/2020 20:17

Not necessarily. I mean when I tried to order a test postal wasn't available and no drive or walk through centres nearer than 40 miles away were available. The time amd place may only have showed up on the list a few mins before.

And results can take days. Waiting a day to see if it developed into anything might well not have made any difference at all.

tigger1001 · 31/12/2020 20:21

She is being unreasonable in being grumpy. If the test ends up positive you need to isolate for the full time.

In the world of covid, these things are going to happen. And she is very unprofessional and is leaving the company open to question, by allowing her annoyance to show.

It's not your fault, and you are doing the right thing by isolating.

Staffy1 · 31/12/2020 20:53

It's only been one day so she's being ridiculous. It's not like he's waited a week.

Darbs76 · 31/12/2020 20:55

Agree should have booked a test straight away with a high temp, as that’s not usual to get one out of the blue and well known it’s a Covid symptom. Means extra hassle for your friend covering shifts until results in, and if every single person did that it’s a lot of lost work days

Frazzled2207 · 31/12/2020 20:57

Is the problem that you went to work after he first became ill? You should have isolated as a household and sought a test at the point of the first fever.

Ilovenewyear · 31/12/2020 20:58

@ejaudhekusjwksnsh

I don't think she's annoyed he's got it, I think she's annoyed he has delayed getting a test.
Especially given some tests can come back within 48 hours. If you had got the test when his temperature was first high, you might have had a result by now.
Ilovenewyear · 31/12/2020 20:59

@StatisticalSense

She is not cross because he has Covid symptoms. She is annoyed because she could have been sorting the rota out 24 hours ago and because you have needlessly extended the period that you will be isolation for (meaning she has to find alternative staff for a longer period of time).
And this.
GetawayfromthatWelshtart · 31/12/2020 21:07

I wonder how many people saying "oh he should have got tested same day" have actual had to get tested?

I don't drive so had to order test online (try doing that when you feel like shite and can't even get out of bed!) and think it took about 36 -48 hours to get to me (bloody amazed it came so quick!) then had to order a return next day (as they only pick up tests early morning) so had to get up at 6.30 morning after and swab so it was ready for pick up at 8am. Then it took 3-4 days for test to come back.

Some of my family or friends who can drive have had to wait a couple of days to get a drive in test slot in their area (only know 1 mate who got same day as their little one had systems and got tested late evening) and results took about 3-5 days to get them back.

Not sure where these magical unicorn "got tested same day the moment I got a temp, results in 2 days" testing areas are because everyone I know haven't experienced that.

StrippedFridge · 31/12/2020 21:10

You overshared when you told her the saga of the high then low then high temperature. All you needed to say was DH has a high temperature. He has a test booked for X. I have to isolate now. Letting you know so you can sort out the rota.

Oversharing DH's medical info has come back to bite you, don't do that again.

To be fair I think it varies wildly by area. I had a cough during the night last Monday (Tuesday early hrs) I booked a test at 8.30am for 9.30am at a testing site less than 10min drive. Had the results emailed before 5am the next day so under 19hrs. That's very typical in our area - North East England.
Baycob · 31/12/2020 21:29

@GrannyBags

Paracetamol is in Lemsip and is an antipyretic ( brings down temperature). Maybe not everyone knows this, so I sympathise! She is obviously stressed! You did the right thing !

HaveITheRightToHoldYou · 31/12/2020 21:42

@GetawayfromthatWelshtart

No magical unicorn.

4 tests in the last 7 weeks for this household. Offered slots within the next 30 mins every time. The same with a couple of tests during previous months.

@MaryLeeOnHigh
The 48 hours was op saying He hasn’t seen anyone in the 48 hours before the symptoms started which I was saying was irrelevant as he could have been infected several days before.

MistletoeandGin · 31/12/2020 21:43

I wonder how many people saying "oh he should have got tested same day" have actual had to get tested?

I’m not doubting your experience at all, but we’ve had to test between us 6 times in our family (three young kids who pick up every cold going). Every time we’ve got a test the same day, and every time we’ve had the results within 24 hours. Midlands.

MistletoeandGin · 31/12/2020 21:49

Actually one was 29 hours.

Shadeslayer · 31/12/2020 21:53

I got test results 4 times within 16 hours and from 5 tests all the same day. Depends where you live I guess.

Your friend if pissed off that she now needs to have someone work new years day which will be a nightmare at this point lots of people will have been drinking already I'm sure. If you told her yesterday then she would have found it easier to sort something even if you couldn't get a test in time.

I don't envy her calling people at 8pm on new years eve asking them to work.

MaryLeeOnHigh · 31/12/2020 22:27

@Onjnmoeiejducwoapy

How would a test avoid “this all”? If it’s positive OP is still going to have to self-isolate.
bluegreygreen · 31/12/2020 22:35

But he could already have a negative test result (if he'd booked it when he should have) so the friend would not need to be adjusting the rota.

I wouldn't be very happy if I were the friend

Onjnmoeiejducwoapy · 01/01/2021 01:52

@MaryLeeOnHigh but statistically it’s most likely negative. And they’d probably know by now.
