Will there be another lockdown?

If the current measures don't work are we headed for another full national lockdown in 2 weeks time?
Is that the next step?

Possibly if things get worse.

It pretty much is lockdown for the majority of the country now, apart from schools.

Whatever9999 · 31/12/2020 16:00

Well for a fairly large part of the country there already is a lockdown. Then for most of the rest the only thing left to close is schools. So not much more can be done.
Thankfully the importance of fresh air, exercise and some sort of contact outside the house (meeting one person outside) has been recognised.

RedskyAtnight · 31/12/2020 16:03

Doubt the government would label it as such. They will simply move the whole country into Tier 4+ (tier 4 + schools not reopening) a few areas at a time and somehow convince the population that this is something completely different.

Frozenintime · 31/12/2020 16:33

Agreed. It's a sneaky way of lockdown

LadyCatStark · 31/12/2020 17:16

Most of the country is in all but name!

likeamillpond · 31/12/2020 17:46

First lockdown people were only allowed out for one lot of excercise a day.
That's the only difference I can think of.

I cba to look back at the original legislation but I'm not sure that was actually in there.

Was it a guideline rather than a law?

PicsInRed · 31/12/2020 17:51

Yes.

I hope we close the borders to casual travel from 1st Jan and utilise proper quarantine a la NZ and Oz. Otherwise lockdown will be another frivolous waste of time and money.

Elephant4 · 31/12/2020 17:52

Where I live - we're in Lockdown. Schools are shut. Everything is shut. We're being told to Stay at Home.

This is Lockdown.

lazylockdowner · 31/12/2020 17:56

Even tier 4 isn't a proper lockdown, takeaways, costa etc open, places like B&M are still open and rammed because they sell a few toilet rolls and tins of beans... madness it shop

Rosehip10 · 31/12/2020 17:58

@likeamillpond why do people keep perpetuating made up law? There was no legislation stating "one hour exercise per day" in the first, or any lock down - note that Gove saying it in a random TV interview is not the law Hmm

MereDintofPandiculation · 31/12/2020 17:59

Was it a guideline rather than a law? Wasn't it a throwaway line by a politician on the Andrew Marr Show? Grin

I didn't think so either

I cba keeping track of legislation as it has now changed more than 250 times I think? But i was very hot on the first set of legislation and printed out the parts relating to exercise and care.

NovemberR · 31/12/2020 18:01

We're in lockdown, frankly.

The only difference seems to be schools planning on going back. Nothing else is open in Tier 4 except essentials. Can't see any difference to the original lockdown.

TwirlingTwizzler · 31/12/2020 18:05

I hope so. People milling around or family excursions to town because all the coffee shops are open for takeaway, diy and garden centres are open so they're heaving, Poundland and B&M open so also heaving from what I can see as I travel home from work on the bus. Supermarkets just a free for all now too.

Infections in this tier 4 area are doubling weekly, masks are now firmly being worn wrongly, no one appears to give a shit about social distancing either.

I may sound like a grinch but I'd actually like to come out the other side of this by the summer and having so many 'essential' shops being allowed to open is just drawing people in because god forbid, they shrivel up without their coffee or whatever.

FoundSkipping · 31/12/2020 18:06

I am hoping the current restrictions work and numbers start reducing so we don’t have to shut all schools. As much as I dislike Boris I think this is much better than a full national lockdown

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 31/12/2020 18:07

I thought DIY shops could open during the first lockdown. Closing them seems a bit extreme, things still go wrong in the home

Whataloadofshit · 31/12/2020 18:12

We are pretty much in lockdown. Only difference is most primary schools are opening.

I don't think we will ever see a lockdown like we did last time.

Takeaways and most workplaces were never forced to close, many chose to. Places such as B&M were always open. Those places won't close again.

We won't see the same level of compliance and staying in that we did.

It wasn’t legislation, but it was official guidance. It was within Johnson’s lockdown speech, not any random TV interview.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 31/12/2020 18:23

I thought the one hour thing came from Michael Gove giving a stupid answer to a journalist. Sadly it played into the hands of the Covid stasi.

MarshaBradyo · 31/12/2020 18:24

It doesn’t feel that different in tier 4 contingency areas

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 31/12/2020 18:25

You're right @MarshaBradyo, to me this feels no different to the March lockdown.

KitKatastrophe · 31/12/2020 18:27

78% of the country are already in lockdown (tier 4)

Conveniently, the changing and widening of tiers does not require approval in parliament. Introducing a full lockdown does.

They'll probably put everyone in tier 4 soon, perhaps excluding the 0.001% of the population who live in the scilly isles, and it still won't technically be a lockdown.

MarshaBradyo · 31/12/2020 18:28

Exactly

PandemicPavalova · 31/12/2020 18:29

Probably but with all schools open.
