Symptom progression

I went for a test on the 27th and got a positive result back on the 28th. I was really shocked as I only had mild symptoms of a dry cough and chest pains but nothing else and don't feel flu like or have a fever.

My friend is a nurse and she told me that she had no symptoms when her test result was positive but that her symptoms kicked in with a vengeance after 5 days and she was very poorly after that.

I had hoped that I was going to be lucky and get away with a really mild infection, but now I'm worried.

I really need to know how your symptoms have progressed if you tested positive, and what your timeline was. Can I not relax until my 10 days of quarantine are up?

Feeling the same here OP, positive test today and no symptoms after 6 days from test but still can’t help worrying!

TiredyMcTired · 30/12/2020 22:01

@Ozzie9523, it's v worrying. I have tried to see if I can find anything online about how symptoms can change or progress but don't seem to be able to find anything about whether symptoms can kick in after having mild or no symptoms after a positive test Hmm

The thing is we don’t know how long we’ve been positive. There was one day between your test and the result but you’ve possibly and probably had it longer. I’m taking a bit of comfort from the fact that I’m at least 6 days in with no symptoms. Try and think positive. I agree tho with all the information floating around there’s very little covering this.

sazzysazz337 · 30/12/2020 22:51

DP was tested on 07/11 and received positive results back on 09/11 and the only symptoms he had was the most evil smelling farts and diarrhoea which carried on until late November c

Vargas · 30/12/2020 22:52

Did you get covid Sazzy?

littlerose12345 · 30/12/2020 22:58

We are on day 10 isolation after MIL who lives with us tested positive.
78 years with dementia.
She cant really tell us about loss of smell/taste but her appetite disappeared.
Symptoms:
Day 1-5 mild temps. Highest was 38 but most readings were around 37.6.
Day 5-10 coughing occasionally, mainly when talking more.

Praying she's had a mild case and we wont get any worse symptoms.

sazzysazz337 · 30/12/2020 22:58

@Vargas nope! neither me or DS did, it was very odd but I did go dettol mad and locked DP in the bedroom! but again we had no idea how long he’d had it for, so the only thing I could think of is 1) I’m extremely lucky or 2) I gave it him

UnderCaffeinated · 30/12/2020 22:59

I'm worrying. Went for a test on the 27th and received a negative result then, but a niggling feeling told me to go for a second test which I did on the 29th and this time I was positive. I feel better today than I did yesterday, but worried it's a false sense of security and it's going to get really bad.

emeraldcity2000 · 30/12/2020 23:07

Dh had a bad dose back in March. His was a v typical progression (at the time, I'm convinced the virus has mutated to become weaker in the second wave). Day 1-5 fever and mild cough. Muscle aches and fatigue. 5-7 breathing difficultly with the main deterioration on day 7 - couldn't count beyond 10 in one breath within a few hours. Day 8 onwards breathing got gradually better with fever subsiding about day 12. He isolated for 3 weeks and we don't think passed it to me, our dd or ds (then 6 weeks old 😬).

bumblingbovine49 · 30/12/2020 23:08

Some people have mild symptoms for 5-7 days , seem to improve for a day or two then deteriorate. This is a common pattern in people who get very ill with Covid and was observed often in the early days when only the sickest people were attributed to Covid because of lack of testing

So yes, in theory, you need to wait out 5-7 days of symptoms before you can be sure that you have got away with a very mild case as you might feel better for a bit but then deteriorate ( though this of course only happens to a small minority of people with Covid)

Fortherosesjoni70 · 30/12/2020 23:13

Its because it goes into the lungs. It starts off in the upper respitory tract seemingly [ from what i have read] and for some it goes into the lungs/other organs.

Fortherosesjoni70 · 30/12/2020 23:19

This might help

Fortherosesjoni70 · 30/12/2020 23:20

Not sure how accurate this is as some people have absolutely nothing except fatigue. Most people i know have had very mild symptoms.

Fortherosesjoni70 · 30/12/2020 23:20

Im sure you will also be fine :)

PapercraftNinja · 30/12/2020 23:27

I am also having this anxiety, I had a really bad headache and whole body aches but the fatigue at the moment is better than it was.

Fortherosesjoni70 · 30/12/2020 23:31

I feel i am going to catch it and this is exactly what freaks me out. I will be really anxious.

CopperheadRoad · 30/12/2020 23:38

It’s been a week since my positive test result, but as a rough estimate I’ve been ill with covid for two weeks (insidious onset of symptoms). I’m now feeling much better and have just been left with a sort of residual cold.

The first week was gradually increasing dizziness, malaise, muscle aches, stomach cramps and diarrhoea. This progressed to extreme fatigue, aching, sore throat and a really stiff sore neck. When this improved the “cold” symptoms started and I lost my taste and smell.

I had none of the three man symptoms prior to getting tested. Even now I haven’t had a fever or cough. My partner now has symptoms and my 12 week old is feverish, I’m just so relieved I’m well enough to hold the fort and look after everyone. I’ve been lucky with it, sure you’ll be ok too xx

Porcupineintherough · 31/12/2020 00:02

It is totally typical for COVID symptoms to worsen in the second week - this is particularly nasty if you already have significant symptoms during the first week. But - it doesnt always happen. It is possible to have mild or no symptoms throughout.

First time round I was sick days 1-6, felt better in day 7 then really ill days 8-14. Second time round was mild, in bed for days 5 and 6, then better every day. No one else in my family got worse during the second week either time.

Porcupineintherough · 31/12/2020 00:07

Sorry, to clarify: its totally normal for symptoms to worsen but that doesnt necessarily mean you will be dangerously ill.

OneMoreForExtra · 31/12/2020 00:12

This is the best symptom progression article I've found:

www.google.com/amp/s/www.kiro7.com/news/trending/coronavirus-how-covid-19-progresses-day-by-day-breakdown-symptoms/YRC3CCK2NFD2THIYJHT35447AU/%3foutputType=amp

Hope you stay well. I'm on day 7 and thinking I'm coming out the other side, ticked all the initial boxes but only mild-medium level, no breathing difficulties.

My DS, who i think was our plague vector, had the diarrhoea and evil facts too!

CrystalPuff · 31/12/2020 00:49

@Porcupineintherough Did you really catch Covid with confirmed PCR tests twice? If so, are you in touch with any medical institutes since that‘s incredibly rare. There has only been a few cases among 37million infections worldwide. www.ecdc.europa.eu/sites/default/files/documents/Re-infection-and-viral-shedding-threat-assessment-brief.pdf

Porcupineintherough · 31/12/2020 01:05

@CrystalPuff antibody tests the first time, pcr the second. It's not that rare as it turns out but yes I'm under a consultant at the COVID recovery clinic. I had low levels of antibodies in July, gone by September, sick again Dec.

Pansypath · 31/12/2020 01:18

Following as v interested. Have had three negative tests since dh got a positive - 2 days after his positive, five days after his positive and ten days after his positive. But I now have a stinking cold and no smell!

Jsummersun · 31/12/2020 06:26

I have also tried to find symptom progression answers. Mainly to alleviate anxiety which can easily get out of control!

I’ve concluded symptoms vary widely. I also think the original strain has different symptoms. Here’s my timeline of symptoms thus far:
Day 1 and 2 : mild nausea
Day 3 no symptoms but asked to take test by ZOE
Day 4 sore throat taste smell dulled /test positive
Day 5 taste/smell dulled, nausea returns, sore throat
Day 6 slight head and neck ache, nausea gone, sore throat gone, taste/smell dulled
Day 7 very bad headache, muscle aches across upper back. Taste/smell dulled

Today is day 8 and headache seems to have improved. Like the rest of you - the concern is what happens next.

I test oxygen level with finger oximeter - they are quite cheap on Amazon. All readings normal.

The odd thing is that for many people there is no high temperature or cough. Unless they report before those symptoms appear?

Hope this is helpful for people. Use the ZOE app to log symptoms to help research symptoms.
If you read this snd haven’t posted your symptoms - please do ! Factual up-to-date research is helpful for people with symptoms as the OP explains!

Iamsodonewith2020 · 31/12/2020 06:47

Porcupine I am the same. I’ll in March, antibodies detected in July then positive again Christmas Eve. My GP wonders if it’s because it’s a different strain as I am not the only one this has happened to in our town of just a few thousand. Currently a lot sicker than in March with it 9 days in
