Statement in parliament this afternoon on 'reopening of schools in England'

By Gavin.

I'm aware there are a million threads on this generally but this is specifically regarding the statement - any leaks/clues/predictions?

To state my own position: I think schools need to close to all except keyworker and vulnerable children. I feel it's obvious this needs to happen. My own two children are thriving at school and I'm not concerned about them at all - if their (primary) school is open, I will send them - but I worry for their teachers, any vulnerable parents of their classmates and of course the NHS.

My prediction (based on nothing): secondary schools blended/part time. Primary fully open. We are tier 4 fwiw and I disagree with opening schools in January...

@Passmeabottlemrjones

If that's correct, then that's not a small number at all.

Well, it is relatively to the whole of England isn't it?!

Well of course it's a small number compared to all schools in England, but from the way Gav was talking earlier I expected it to be a much smaller list.

Lovely. Local situation bad enough to smack most of us into Tier 4, but God forbid primary schools are given any additional time to be prepared to re-enter battle next week. It will be utter carnage. Thank you, Gavlar. My colleagues and I thank you for your continued support 😠
@GoldenLabbie

Unbelievable entitlement, and disrespect in equal measure for teachers. As you can clearly see in these threads.
I think it's more than disrespect. some of these people seem to actively hate the ones charged with the education of their children. It's fucking bizarre.

DownRightAmazing · 30/12/2020 17:26

Well we aren't on the list. I'm pleased for my own children but desperately sorry for their teachers and the NHS. I await more areas being added - probably on Sunday evening.

Has anything been said about nurseries in the hot spots where primarily schools are closing

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 30/12/2020 17:29

Those 49 areas look like the areas that went into Tier 4 first.

Nurseries to remain open, except for school nurseries which can choose.

By Sunday if the numbers have continued in a similar pattern then I sincerely hope it will be quicker and easier to list the areas without school closures.

Gov website says all early years setting should continue to open to all children as normal.
the80sweregreat · 30/12/2020 17:30

The isle of Scilly is fine to open schools apparently!

DfEisashambles · 30/12/2020 17:31

Interestingly private nurseries and childminders are exempt

GinAndTonicOnIt · 30/12/2020 17:32

I don't understand why secondary schools are staying open in these hotspot areas?

Emsie1987 · 30/12/2020 17:33

That's quite worrying. Thank you all

My little one goes to a private nursery and we are based in one of biggest hot spots

toobusytothink · 30/12/2020 17:34

What a joke!!!!

It's such a funny joke he's said it twice. Sad
Parker231 · 30/12/2020 17:36

Although my DC’s are older so not affected by today’s announcement, I am a governor at a primary school affected by the delayed opening this term. I agree it is the right thing to do but do have sympathy with the parents many are families with both parents working who now have limited time to find childcare. I know that not all are key workers or are in jobs which can be done from home.

He did that side eye thing though, it really did sound and look like a lie!
dreamingbohemian · 30/12/2020 17:37

I don't understand the London part of that list

Our borough is not on it but every borough surrounding us is. I don't think we're doing any better than they are?

kingat · 30/12/2020 17:38

How is this majority of schools that are open? They just started with that so they didnt have to clarify what is the plan for those closed primaries.

Are they just supposed to be on holiday for unknown number of weeks while their peers in Cornwall are learning

Ah my first deleted post for directing some well-deserved anger at people being smugly happy about others being placed in danger of death. Not sorry, they should be ashamed.
