What about nurseries?

There is a lot of talk and speculation about secondaries closing, and also potentially primaries but I can’t find anything about nurseries. I feel like I need my nursery child in childcare more than I need my older ones in school in order to work.

No one can answer for definite but I’m interested in views as I’m trying to contingency plan but it’s impossible!

I think nurseries along with schools and primaries will shut in tier 4 areas.

Bocadilla · 29/12/2020 15:43

They are shut in Scotland. Imagine it will become the same situation in England due to current levels being so high.

AutoIncorrect · 29/12/2020 15:47

20 staff tested positive in the week before Christmas at the nursery I work in.
I think they will close them.
The symptoms were all sore throats and shivers, no one had the usual symptoms. Personally I think the new strain has different symptoms meaning people are spreading it without realising, lots of kids come in with symptoms like this and it won’t necessarily be picked up unless they develop a high temp (none of us infected ones did) meaning it rips through like wildfire.

Remmy123 · 29/12/2020 16:01

They will remain open

LadyPenelope68 · 29/12/2020 16:02

Like Primaries, they will remain open

I have heard this from a very reliable source too, but cant provide a reference of that I'm afraid.

Alb1 · 29/12/2020 16:33

I think they will do whatever primary schools do, although I’m not sure what that is. If they do close I hope it’s not for long!

EagleFlight · 29/12/2020 16:34

I agree that they will do what primary schools do.

Hardbackwriter · 29/12/2020 16:46

There's no way they'll shut nurseries if primaries are open, but I also think there may be a u-turn on primaries in which case nurseries could shut.

MarshaBradyo · 29/12/2020 16:46

They’ll stay open

FlingingFlangingHardToOpen · 29/12/2020 17:20

My expectation is that there will be a new tier 5 and they will close in those areas. No evidence, just what I think. And am planning for.

Wherediditgo · 29/12/2020 17:45

Following with interest m. We just can’t know. Anything is possible!

OllietheOwl · 29/12/2020 17:52

I think they’ll stay open because parents can’t work with preschoolers in the house. Or primary age really. They’ll shut secondary as kids of that age don’t need as much parenting.

ChocChip01 · 29/12/2020 17:52

It’s so stressful not knowing. I’m not sure what I’ll do if they close. My nursery were even shut to key workers last time - but I was on maternity leave then. I’m NHS and partner military so no working from home for us Confused

MarshaBradyo · 29/12/2020 17:57

If you wfh you can’t look after a nursery aged child anyway

Ilovegreentomatoes · 29/12/2020 18:10

I can't see my dad yet I can go to work with no ppe and no social distance with a load of toddlers sneezing and coughing on me. Honestly nursery staff have always been treated like crap and we are still being treated like crap.I understand the need for childcare but my safety trumps looking after someone's child so they can go to work.

Are you vulnerable?
Rubyrubyrubyred · 29/12/2020 19:07

But that is the job you signed up for? @Ilovegreentomatoes everyone knows preschoolers are gross. It's a job where surely you know that and know that makes illness rife. I would say more so than primaries and secondaries that really it is an expected downside of working in a nursery. Obviously covid is riskier but I don't really see it any different to the position health care workers are in right now.

Rubyrubyrubyred · 29/12/2020 19:08

And my child isn't in nursery so I can go to work but for his development.

Invisimamma · 29/12/2020 19:10

Nurseries are closed in Scotland, open key worker children only.

Lazypuppy · 29/12/2020 19:14

I hope they keep the nurseries open.that first lockdown was horrific. There is no way i am WFH again with my 3 year old at home, and the other mums in my team have said the same.

In one way its lucky as we can have paid leave, however it will just add stress to when we are able to go back we'll have a huge backlog of work that needs to be done.

Sorry to jump on, another nursery practitioner here. Yes we signed up for the odd illness but if it’s bad enough for almost everything else to close it’s bad enough for us too! It’s also different than those working in healthcare because we are not really provided with PPE and certainly not as much as health care professionals!

Healthcare workers are given PPE

And yet, this is exactly what many, many people did for months in the summer...
