I think I need to test but I'm so scared

I'm sat here on my own. My kids are still in bed. I've had mild cold symptoms a couple of days but this morning I woke up with my chest drenched in sweat. The thermometer says I don't have a fever but I've never woken up like that before. No cough yet or loss of taste but I have that end of cold taste and tickle in my throat. I have to test, don't I, but I'm so scared.

It’s like people saying they’re scared of doing pregnancy tests. The test doesn’t make you more or less pregnant Hmm if you have covid you have it now the only thing that changes is you knowing.

Without key symptoms showing you have a 50/50 chance (at most) of having it so you’re in a worse situation not knowing and freaking out about it anyway. I had cold symptoms and sweats, got tested and it was negative.

I do think everyone who says how terrified they are of covid specifically because they’re significantly overweight might do well to use this as an opportunity to examine how they feel about that and if it’s something they seriously want to think about changing.

If you’re happy overweight that’s one thing but if it’s causing you severe anxiety/worry maybe start to address it.

(I say this as someone who has a BMI of 35 for several years)

migmogmash · 29/12/2020 08:53

for those saying OP doesn't have the symptoms...the virus is changing over time. I work for the NHS, all the people I know recently (including myself) who tested positive, have not had the 'magic 3' symptoms.

But to reassure you OP, no it isn't especially pleasant having it, but the vast majority don't suffer any complications. I hope you feel better soon whether it's covid or something else Smile

Strictlysilly · 29/12/2020 08:55

Best getting tested op the wait is very anxiety provoking but once you know it will be better. Remember your household needs to isolate now until you receive your results then take it from there. The test itself if a bit uncomfortable but not sore (I get tested weekly so I know) .

bathsh3ba · 29/12/2020 08:58

We haven't been anywhere since Christmas Eve and didn't plan to so isolating isn't a problem. I must have either got it at the supermarket or church, if I have it, as I haven't been anywhere else in the past 2 weeks.

DH just had it (we are out of his isolating period) and none of the rest of us got symptoms - we had to test yesterday for DD in theory going back to school and we were all negative so even if you do have it it doesnt mean that anyone else will. He just had a minor cold

CaMePlaitPas · 29/12/2020 09:03

Hi OP, like you I have a high BMI, I'm 30 and had Covid back in March. It knocked me for six, like a bad flu, but when you've got two kids you've just got to get on with it right?

I recovered fully in just over 3 weeks. If you're not coughing that's a good sign, don't forget it's cold and flu season, it might not be the dread C word.

TokyoSushi · 29/12/2020 09:04

I had a massive night sweat last night, but it's because I was having one of those dreams about Virgil van Dijk! 😍

Good that you've booked the test OP, everything crossed for a negative result.

Littlefluffyclouds13 · 29/12/2020 09:08

My god the lack of compassion on Mumsnet is appalling.
Op isn't feeling very well and has clearly stated she is nervous/scared.

Slow clap to all the heartless posters who responded with cold, unpleasant or condescending comments.

Littlefluffyclouds13 · 29/12/2020 09:09

Hope you're feeling better soon op Thanks

Velvian · 29/12/2020 09:14

People blindly complying with the list of 3 symptoms is one of the main reasons that we are in such a dire situation.

I can't believe all of the responses, "you don't need a test", "you don't have any of the 3 symptoms" - Where have you been?

It is a pedantry particular to MN.

Crowncan · 29/12/2020 09:17

OP it is ok to be scared. I had similar symptoms and my test came back negative. You did the right thing getting a test but there is every chance this isn’t Covid and even if it is there is a good chance you will be absolutely fine.

Isn't it just! Certain posters seem to revel in it. It's really an unpleasant response, when it's fairly obvious a poster is worried.
Redwinestillfine · 29/12/2020 09:35

Well done on booking the test. You have done the right thing. They are really straight forward and once done you can relax and focus on feeing better.

Beepbopadooda · 29/12/2020 09:41

You're doing the right thing getting tested. My friend is on the front line and said new strain has been displaying cold like symptoms compared to earlier this year. I wouldn't worry too much about your BMI, you're young

I was thinking exactly the same.
bathsh3ba · 29/12/2020 10:35

Well I'm back from the test. I actually feel calmer just knowing I've done something. So will now try to keep busy (in the house) until my result comes through. I just feel end of coldy at the moment, with a bit of a headache but that could be from crying earlier, and a slightly tight chest that could be anxiety.

OP posts:
starrynight19 · 29/12/2020 10:43

Hopefully it’s negative op but knowing either way will help you. Take it easy today. I was floored for three weeks with it and still trying to shake off symptoms. But I came through it. Take care Flowers

bathsh3ba · 29/12/2020 11:12

My daughter just pointed out my parents could be asymptomatic and have given it to me, which cheered me up a bit. I guess there's no point blame gaming. Just wait and see.... I think I will order a pulse oximeter on the 31st when I get paid though as it might help with anxiety if it is coronavirus. Everything I've read suggests I would probably have a few days before it went really bad if it did.

OP posts:
DianaT1969 · 29/12/2020 11:15

When did you see your parents OP? Perhaps tell them now to isolate, pending your test result?
Symptoms usually show around day 5 according to what I've read, so if you had contact with people on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day it could be that. I hope you get a negative. 💐

bathsh3ba · 29/12/2020 11:32

I've told my parents and they were pretty much isolating anyway so it doesn't make much difference. They are much less worried than I am! We are in a support bubble and they stayed with us from Christmas Eve to Boxing Day. I reckon I probably picked this up on either the 23rd or 24th, hopefully I may have not been shedding much virus when they were here. We didn't hug but didn't keep 2m distance - usually at least 1m except at mealtimes. Kept windows open and they had their own bathroom. They have no symptoms at all so far. They are 66 and 67 so not old old but my dad's an ex-smoker and my mum has a high BMI like me and hypertension.

I guess if it's usually about 5 days then if they are okay in two days time, so five days after they left, they are probably okay. But yesterday I was thinking I was maybe okay as it was 5 days since the 23rd and then wham overnight sweats.

HuckfromScandal · 29/12/2020 11:43

@bathsh3ba- well done
Here’s hoping for us both getting a quick negative response.

Scottishgirl85 · 29/12/2020 11:55

You don't have symptoms to warrant a test.
And why are you scared? Seriously, there are many worse things in life than Covid for the majority of the population.

bathsh3ba · 29/12/2020 12:05

To those querying why I'm scared, anxiety/fear aren't always logical. I thought I'd coped pretty well through a year of on/off lockdown on my own with my kids. This last strait has just been too much for me. I consider the sweat to be an indication that I may have had a fever in the night, therefore I'm testing to be safe.

OP posts:
VeganCow · 29/12/2020 12:41

are people lying about their symptoms on the app so they can get a test as so many are getting tested without the 3 symptoms?

HuckfromScandal · 29/12/2020 13:36

Well I didn’t lie
It asked if I had had any of the 3 symptoms. And I have had. I was running a temp.

So I have been tested.

It’s not the nicest process., so I can’t imagine people choosing to be tested for the shits and giggles.
