Staff in Asda not wearing masks

HermioneMakepeace · 29/12/2020 06:28

I went to Asda yesterday and loads of staff were not wearing masks. How is this allowed? I am very wary and wear a mask at all times as we are shielding. I had a problem at the self-serve checkout and the staff member who came to sort it out was inches away from me, maskless.

Does anybody know why Asda thinks this is OK, especially when we’re in Tier 4?

They are probably exempt.

If you don't like it shop elsewhere.

Sparklingbrook · 29/12/2020 07:17
@Sparklingbrook I’ve done enough of that this week, trust me 😂
Oh. You are a serial complainer?

DontAskForMedicalAdviceOnMars · 29/12/2020 07:17

@HermioneMakepeace

PS apologies for using the term ‘Karen’.
So why use it in the first place?
lunalucie · 29/12/2020 07:25

So they shouldn't be customer facing? I'm interested to know what you expect Asda to do with staff who are exempt from wearing a mask, have you not heard of workplace discrimination? There would be uproar if Asda refused entry to a customer who was exempt so why should staff be treated any different?

HermioneMakepeace · 29/12/2020 07:34

@lunalucie If it has been just one or two, then I probably would have assumed that was the case. However, there were so many of them not wearing masks. And these were young people. I would be amazed if they were ALL exempt.

Oh so now young people can't be exempt? Your ignorance is astounding.

HermioneMakepeace · 29/12/2020 07:50

@lunalucie and you are astoundingly rude.

RosamundePilcher · 29/12/2020 07:51

I work for Tesco and we do have to wear face mask while customers in.

Wherediditgo · 29/12/2020 07:52

And?
May I suggest shopping elsewhere... or maybe not leaving your house? You can’t control everything, OP.

That’s so ableist language. You have no idea if they are or are not exempt.

PleasantVille · 29/12/2020 07:53

So not what she posted and I'd also be pretty surprised if in a supermarket with a large number of young staff they were all exempt from mask wearing

OutComeTheWolves · 29/12/2020 07:53

I don't think a little cloth mask is particularly effective anyway. I think the annoyance of having to wear one for a full shift at work (as opposed to the duration of a shopping trip) outweighs the perceived benefits.

Smileyoriley · 29/12/2020 07:54

I'm with you here OP. I avoid these staff like the plague or walk out.

Theredjellybean · 29/12/2020 07:55

Before tier4 I was traveling into London by train for work most weeks.
The number of train staff with masks round their necks, dangling from one ear etc made me furious.
Especially as the tanniy played announcement continuously about wearing a mask and fines if you didn't.

Wherediditgo · 29/12/2020 07:55

Has there even been any statistical proof that masks make a blind bit of difference?? They’ve been mandatory in so many places for months now and yet our infection rates have skyrocketed.

JacobReesMogadishu · 29/12/2020 07:56

I went to Aldi a few weeks ago, none of the six staff were wearing a mask.

I assume they think they don’t have to as they’re behind a screen on the checkouts.....however when you’re stood at the end packing there is no screen. The screen only runs down the side length of the checkout.

I won’t be going back.

Yes, lots of research/studies showing they are effective at reducing transmission.
HermioneMakepeace · 29/12/2020 07:57

@Wherediditgo medical staff have worn them for decades. I am sure there must have been some tests done at some point to check their effectiveness.

Medical staff wear PPE (not cloth face coverings) and are trained to use them properly.

Joe public chucking on a square of cloth isn’t the same thing.

I'm sure ive read that there have been many studies done, I'm sure you can look them up but the rise in infections isn't a simplistic result of one action.
Wherediditgo · 29/12/2020 08:01

When used effectively, maybe? We’re studies carried out in a controlled environment? And if they’re so effective, why is CV still ripping through the population?

HermioneMakepeace · 29/12/2020 08:01

Because people aren’t wearing masks.

Masks aren’t 100% effective. However , most of the transmission is when people aren’t wearing them : family get together , schools , restaurants etc
Wherediditgo · 29/12/2020 08:09

@HermioneMakepeace

Because people aren’t wearing masks.

But they are?? A few people in ASDA not wearing them doesn’t mean that nobody is Confused

I wear one.... however, I think they’re more of a placebo to try and convince the incredibly anxious that it IS safe to go shopping and spend their money.

There may be evidence that there is a benefit. But I would reckon it’s negligible. And may even be off-set by the false sense of security it infers on people.
