Is it risky to going to a supermarket? (Covid)

OP posts:
Quaagars · 29/12/2020 00:20

I prefer to leave delivery slots for those who are less physically able to get to the shops or who might wish not to do so because they are in a higher risk group.

Exactly - there's no reason for me not to go in person to the supermarket, I'm perfectly able. I'd rather keep delivery slots free for those who can't as easily.

Alternista · 29/12/2020 00:24

Delivery slots aren’t under pressure round here (yet) so I’ll keep having my food delivered and concentrate on minimising load on the NHS instead, ta.

Risk assessment is all about looking at possible risk, balanced against benefit. Then thinking about what you can do to mitigate that risk.

So - how important is it to pick up your shopping in person, vs getting an on-line delivery? Can you afford an on-line delivery, if on a budget and perhaps only shopping for small amounts of food (so don't trigger free delivery slots). Can you afford to shop inthe shops that do on-line, or are you tied to Lidl and Aldi ?
Can you limit the number of visits ? Pre-Covid, some people went into supermarkets 3 or 4 times a week. Can you make that once a week, or once every 10 days ?
Are you vulnerable anyway ?
Do you make sure you wash your hands properly as soon as you get in ?
Do you use the spray at the door to clean the handle of your basket trolley? Do you wear a mask ?
Can you visit at quieter times of the day ?

etc
etc
etc

Nobody who shops online is preventing the needy getting a delivery! I can't believe people are still rolling out that old 'virtue signal'.

LoveNote · 29/12/2020 00:35

If you are a non mask wearer then try hard to stay away

Staff don’t appreciate you being there with no mask putting them more at risk than necessary

Givemeabreak88 · 29/12/2020 00:35

I felt as a single mum to 4 it was better to get online slots than dragging 4 kids to the supermarket (which you get judged for as well) seems you can’t win whatever you do

ZenNudist · 29/12/2020 00:35

Not particularly risky. I'm 42 and not clinically vulnerable. I go once a week and have done for the whole pandemic. I do wipe down my trolley and hand sanitised but I can't see that makes much difference. Once in there i shop as normal.

FreekStar · 29/12/2020 00:42

I shop online, my vulnerable parents insist on going to the supermarket because they like going and because they don't have the internet. I know lots of elderly people who are the same. I have to go to work in a school and the last thing the supermarkets need is to be full of high-risk teachers, mixing with the elderly etc. The fewer people go to the shops the better!

jessstan1 · 29/12/2020 00:48

I don't know, have all my stuff delivered.

LookMoreCloselier · 29/12/2020 00:49

I shop online because that's what idid pre march. I've not done a big supermarket shop in person in years and I'm not going to start now. I dont believe I'm taking slots away from anyone as there are still slots available.

Babyroobs · 29/12/2020 00:50

I don't consider it too risky if people are sensible but of course you can't control what others do. I watched a man in the supermarket the other day who picked up and scrutinized every pack of chicken on the shelf, he must have picked up about 20 packs, so clearly if he had the virus it is potentially over all those packs. Others completely ignore distancing rules, others take the whole family as if it's a trip out. I go in, grab what I need quickly, sanitise hands on arrival and don't hang about

ClearingSpaceOnTheTrophyShelf · 29/12/2020 00:51

Yes

PickAChew · 29/12/2020 00:51

Less risky than starving if you can't get a delivery.

PickAChew · 29/12/2020 00:54

I also use my own sanitiser because the stuff in my usual supermarket makes me cough.

Quaagars · 29/12/2020 00:57

Twenty? Or more like two or three?!

OK, annoying. I'm standing on the place where you're supposed to stand and others are sometimes right behind me.

others take the whole family as if it's a trip out
What about those who have no choice but to take the kids with them for example?

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 29/12/2020 01:04

I think it's relatively low risk, but you can lower the risk further by avoiding busier times of day, wearing a mask, sanitising your hands etc.

Is it risky going to a supermarkets?
Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 29/12/2020 01:05

Where have you been since March to be asking that question now?

BlackCatShadow · 29/12/2020 01:09

Big supermarkets should be fine as long as they aren't too crowded.

The 3 Cs are:
Closed spaces with poor ventilation
Crowded places with many people near by
Close-contact settings such as close-range conversations

Make sure to wear a mask, sanitise or wash your hands thoroughly, avoid standing too close to other customers and use the self-serve tills if possible.

GlowingOrb · 29/12/2020 01:19

Of course it’s risky. We get as much delivered as possible and use click and collect as well. We rarely enter any kind of store at this point.

1forAll74 · 29/12/2020 01:24

It might be risky going to the supermarket, even though you personally have done all the correct things, as you will not know about any other people, who have not followed any rules, and there are many of them.

bluebell34567 · 29/12/2020 01:25

click and collect is good.

GlowingOrb · 29/12/2020 01:27

Delivery slots aren’t at a premium here so I figure it’s my responsibility to use delivery and pickup to minimize the risk to retail workers. It seems like they would be much safer if we went entirely back to the days where you gave the clerk your list and they pulled your items. That way only employees would need to be inside the buildings and customer handoffs could be done outdoors.

RhubarbFizz · 29/12/2020 01:28

I would rather not go but cannot always get deliveries. It is a shame that where I am there are no queues so much busier and often whole families going round together (4-5 people together) so less room to avoid people.

ladylunchalot · 29/12/2020 01:29

I've really cut down the amount of times I visit a supermarket. I used to pop in on my way home from work most days but now I do a weekly planner and normally do click and collect. It's saved me a fortune.
I do sometimes do a weekly shop in the supermarket but make sure I clean the trolley and my hands and use scan as you go. I also go on a Sunday evening when it's much quieter.
