When do you think life will be 'normal'

Do you think by next Christmas? As in, allowing big gatherings, unlimited household mixing.. just wondering what people's best guesses are..

OP posts:
Onedropbeat · 28/12/2020 10:09

Sometime between 2023-2024

Fizbosshoes · 28/12/2020 10:10

I think a lot of MN are hoping for never....

covetingthepreciousthings · 28/12/2020 10:10

I think there will still be some measures in place by Christmas - whether that's social distancing or masks shopping etc.. however by that point I think people will have stopped following the rules so there will be more gatherings etc.

Onedropbeat · 28/12/2020 10:11

Being optimistic 2022

GoldenOmber · 28/12/2020 10:11

Later this year.

WalkingOnStarshine · 28/12/2020 10:12

I reckon around May.

onedayinthefuture · 28/12/2020 10:15

MN is the wrong place to ask this. With the vaccinations, sometime in 2021. Nightclubs are open in Wuhan, I believe the Chinese have a vaccine too.

Trinacham · 28/12/2020 10:16

Rather optimistically thinking end of 2021.

They did a proper lockdown in Wuhan - that's why they can have nightclubs open.
IcedPurple · 28/12/2020 10:17

Bearing in mind that nobody here has a better clue than you - incl those who will say 'We're never getting back to normal. Sorry" my guess is by this summer life will be close to normal. Perhaps some restrictions on travel and no large gatherings, but most day to day life should be pretty normal. Could be even earlier if Oxford comes on stream, as is looking likely. This of course is purely guesswork on my part, as it is on everyone else's.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 28/12/2020 10:17

I tend to think mid 2021 based on rollout of the vaccine.

onedayinthefuture · 28/12/2020 10:19

@QueenStromba but cases did re-emerge after their proper lockdown. This virus in a population the size of China will still be out there, they haven't eradicated it. Don't be so stupid. Spain did a proper lockdown too and look where they are now.

rosie1959 · 28/12/2020 10:21

I think April/May depending on the Oxford vaccine and if the powers that be really get on with distribution fast

tappitytaptap · 28/12/2020 10:22

I wouldn’t ask that here. There are lots of people who seemed to have such a dull life they are happy to live like this forever, not seeing any family or friends with barely anything like theatres open, no activities or hobbies for children or adults. It’s bizarre.

MistletoeandGin · 28/12/2020 10:23

Yeah, we definitely need to weld everyone’s front doors closed and have the army drop off basic food parcels for the next few months.

Eggsley · 28/12/2020 10:28

I think it'll take a while to be properly pre-COVID "normal", maybe by summer 2022. But I think this year will return to a more normal life - we might still have masks and hand sanitiser everywhere, and the tiers system will probably continue but hopefully with the vaccine being rolled out, we'll be able to meet up with friends and family for meals/days out, in their houses and have gatherings of more than 6 people.

Thefeep · 28/12/2020 10:32

By the Spring I hope. We can’t go on like this forever. Xx

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 28/12/2020 10:32

2022 maybe, unless we do some hard lockdowns whilst the vaccine is rolled out.

Given the current cases and the rule breaking going on, 2021 doesn’t seem likely sadly.

SmileyClare · 28/12/2020 10:33

By the summer. I'm very optimistic that our vaccination programme will control the virus.

I think we'll have corona virus season in the winter months, much like we have a flu season and the vaccine will be tweaked yearly to suit the most virulent strain that year. It will still be a danger to the most vulnerable and elderly and they will be vaccinated yearly.

We won't get rid of the virus, it's here to stay but it won't be the threat it is now. Travel to other countries may be restricted without proof of vaccine, as it is already for other illnesses; yellow fever, diphtheria, hep b for example.

Heartlantern2 · 28/12/2020 10:36

Summer 2021, I can’t handle beyond that, I’m cracking at the seams now!

Caramel81 · 28/12/2020 10:37

I think 2022 for things to be more how they were before March this year. I do think the second half of 2021 will be a bit more normal too though and we’ll hopefully not see any areas go into tier 3 or 4 again.

PhilCornwall1 · 28/12/2020 10:38

@Fizbosshoes

Exactly this.

So many thinking masks and social distancing should stay (along with not answering the front door and unknown numbers!!).

RMRM · 28/12/2020 10:41

My guess is 2022 - 2023, with gradual improvement the whole time.

Katie517 · 28/12/2020 10:56

By Spring. People here saying 2023/2024 have lost a sense of reality and perspective. It’s simply not possible for it to carry on once the vulnerable have been vaccinated. Yes there might be precautions, hand sanitiser, giving people more personal space in busy environments but it will switch to personal responsibility. Society cannot continue like this indefinitely and the government cannot continue to fund 80% of people’s salaries for any longer and people’s mental health will not take much more. You can already see a stark difference in attitudes now to back in March (if you ask real people not the lockdown lovers of mumsnet). People need joy and a reason to live at the moment we are just existing without the fundamental things that make life worthwhile and enriched.

Sarahandduck18 · 28/12/2020 10:57

I think masks, hand sanitising, the move to cashless and online shopping will all be permanent.
