When do you think life will be 'normal'

Do you think by next Christmas? As in, allowing big gatherings, unlimited household mixing.. just wondering what people's best guesses are..

*Okay, I concede there will still be some people living in lockdown until 2027 like those Japanese soldiers in the jungle still fighting WW2 in the 60s.

Maybe coming out occasionally for food and supplies and to say “it’s going to be another fifty years at least but we need to accept reality, I’m afraid. Sorry.” as the rest of the country conga-lines past them on our way back to the pub.*

🤣🤣🤣

Mreggsworth · 28/12/2020 15:44

I think we are in for a rough few months with another March style lock down starting soon.

By late spring/ summer I think enough people will be vaccinated that we can all live at the equivalent of tier 2/1 . But I think the tier system will be eliminated by then and it will just be general rules of limiting crowds, early closing times, encouraging out door activities rather than gatherings indoors etc.

By winter / next Christmas I think on its way to normal. Still rule of face masks, attempts at limiting crowds however allowed into peoples homes. Holidays allowed, Christmas markets. Pantomimes allowed as long as following guidelines.

By early 2022 I think big venues can properly open with live gigs and so on, however may occasionally need to temporarily close due to outbreaks.

I think there will be some form of vaccine passport too however I think this will be used for the discretion of establishments and venues rather than something that will be mandatory and enforced- used to give places the choice of whether they want to reduce chances of short term closures and out breaks by only allowing vaccinated people in.

Thats just what I think. I'm fairly confident we are in the last spell of things being really shit but will get better after.

I reckon by the middle of next year things will be much closer to normal - household mixing to a degree, pubs, shops and restaurants open, etc but with some limitations on numbers. Then by Christmas I reckon we will be able to mix as normal.

Once the most vulnerable are vaccinated the risk of overburdening the NHS diminishes rapidly. I think by June / July we’ll be a good way into vaccinating the most needy.

CrackALack · 28/12/2020 15:50

You shouldn't ask this on here OP.

I sincerely hope no one suffering with poor MH reads half the threads on MN about this subject. Some people here love the idea that this will carry on for the next 50 years, we'll never go back to normal and so on...

Meanwhile if you speak to anyone in the real world, I think the govt would be lucky to get the compliance they are getting now from the public past say summertime 2021. People's patience is dwindling rapidly. Once the most vulnerable have received the vaccine people will expect to be able to take their own risks.

I don't care what the doom and gloomers say, you will not get people complying with lockdowns and tiers and restrictions until 2023 and so on. No matter how many times you chastise people for being 'selfish'. People don't care anymore even now frankly and the Govt know this.

Once the most vulnerable are vaccinated, why would they want to carry on destroying the countries economy, and the goodwill of their voters for a virus with a death rate so low?

It won't go away, it'll become like other viruses we have every year, flu etc... People will live with it, people would rather live with it than live like this like we do with many many other diseases.

ArabellaPilkington · 28/12/2020 15:52

Some normailty by summer 2021
Much more normal by autumn 2021

Terracottasaur · 28/12/2020 15:55

We will all be spending a lot more time in our own homes from now on. That is not a bad thing.

It’s a terrible thing for most of us. Humans aren’t meant to live in splendid isolation.

Your doom and gloom view is amusing but incorrect. Things will be normal again and much sooner than you think. The entire world isn’t going to bunker down at home to prevent a handful of people getting long Covid.

CrackALack · 28/12/2020 15:59

Yep. I know people like to spout about how selfish everyone is if they won't board up their windows and sit in a dark room until 2024 but in reality humans are naturally selfish.

If you think people will put up with losing jobs, homes, freedom, their family and friends and their mental health for the sake of others for much longer I think you're ridiculously deluded.

Fizbosshoes · 28/12/2020 16:01

Solitary confinement is a punishment for most people.
It seems like it's quite an appealing lifestyle choice to half of MN.Confused

Kazzyhoward · 28/12/2020 16:03

I don't care what the doom and gloomers say, you will not get people complying with lockdowns and tiers and restrictions until 2023 and so on.

You will if the law says so, re theatres, sports stadia, pubs, restaurants, etc. If the law requires them to either close, or restrict numbers, then that's what they will have to do. As we saw in Summer, there were some pubs which didn't comply with the SD rules which had their licences revoked by their local authority and had to close. Obviously, far harder to enforce smaller gatherings in homes etc which will probably have been forgotten by then. But, certainly, where the police/local authorities CAN enforce rules/laws, that's where the restrictions will linger for longer until deaths and ICU occupancy falls back to low enough levels.

Forgetmenot157 · 28/12/2020 16:11

I think by May, I also think it will really depend what other countries do... No way will the government let other cou tries economies get back to normal while ours is suffering...

PhilCornwall1 · 28/12/2020 16:17

That goodwill is going now to be honest. Regardless of what the MN hardliners think, plenty are now doing what they want. It's "rule breaker" city around here.

Roselilly36 · 28/12/2020 16:22

Autumn 2021

And that relies on the govt actually finding away to properly enforce strict restrictions for much longer. Which they won't (can't) do.
Pootle40 · 28/12/2020 16:28

@tappitytaptap

I wouldn’t ask that here. There are lots of people who seemed to have such a dull life they are happy to live like this forever, not seeing any family or friends with barely anything like theatres open, no activities or hobbies for children or adults. It’s bizarre.
MN definitely doesn't represent people I know in real life. Otherwise healthy families who haven't left their home since March Shock
MadameBlobby · 28/12/2020 17:37

I think it will be gradual. Once I have been vaccinated I will mix socially with other vaccinated people.

MadameBlobby · 28/12/2020 17:40

@Kazzyhoward

Masks will not be permanent

They may not be compulsory, but they will be pretty common. Before covid, people were ridiculed if they wore a mask. It has now become normalised. Some people, such as the vulnerable with health conditions, will be a lot more comfortable wearing masks in busy places, on public transport, etc.

My husband has said he’ll wear a mask in future if he has a cold. He doesn’t mind wearing them. I won’t be as I hate them.
MadameBlobby · 28/12/2020 17:43

@LitPeach

I don’t know why people persist with this idea that we’re going to return to ‘normal’.

We will never go back to ‘normal’ I’m afraid. Life has changed permanently as vaccines do not prevent transmission. Allowing COVID to let rip would result in millions of healthy people left permanently disabled by Long COVID.

There will be no more large gatherings or casually meeting a friend for coffee. No more huge Christmas dinners with family. Zoom will replace all of the above permanently.

We will all be spending a lot more time in our own homes from now on. That is not a bad thing.

There probably won’t be such invites for you anyway, who on earth would want to have a coffee or a night out with such a misery guts.

Crumpetycrump · 28/12/2020 18:18

Hopefully Easter or summer at the latest.

My masks will be going in the bin as soon as we no longer have to wear them!

AnneElliott · 28/12/2020 19:44

Hopefully by Summer 2021 as we've got a holiday booked (booked way before Covid was even heard of) and I'd like to go and not have to wear a mask on the plane.
