Is this covid?

Dd tested positive on Monday after being asked to SI by school on friday and developing mild symptoms over the weekend. We did a postal test and were offered them for the whole family (3 of us). Me and DH were negative on Monday but have been feeling under the weather since around weds/Thurs.

We both have headaches, fatigue and shivers. Coughing occasionally and I feel a bit weird, like slightly dizzy and muddy headed. But, all the symptoms are slight and come and go. I'm beginning to wonder if I'm imagining it...

How likely is it we've got COVID? We've all been at home since Friday evening and we've not socially distanced from dd. Her symptoms were so mild I was surprised to get the positive result!

We have 2nd postal tests but can't post them back until Tuesday as there isn't a priority post box nearby doing collections until them. Our nearest test centre is 60 miles.

I'm wondering how likely it is that all 3 of us would have such mild symptoms!?

Sounds like Carbon Monoxide poisoning

LongPauseNoAnswer · 26/12/2020 18:15

I can’t understand these threads. Mumsnet doesn’t have some magical medical crystal ball. The only way to know is if you do the test again and it’s positive.

Until then it’s Schrödinger’s virus.

Benjispruce2 · 26/12/2020 18:16

Quite likely if you’re fairly young. We’ve had an outbreak at school and some staff had a bit of a sore throat, others were bed ridden. Shocked at your nearest test centre being so far away. I think I’d go though.

inquietant · 26/12/2020 18:16

If you are ill at the same time as living with a confirmed positive case I think it is highly likely to be covid.

Many people have mild symptoms, especially if younger and generally healthy. Fingers crossed it stays that way!

Unlikely as we aren't on mains gas.

I'm so sorry to have confused you, although I'm not sure how.

I'm asking for other people's experiences not a crystal ball. I think we'd always assumed that if all 3 of us got it then at least one of us would have properly recognisable symptoms. Of course that could still happen or we could all just have a mild case, which would be very fortunate.

We habe no way of getting to the test centre so will have to wait for Tuesday to send off the postal tests.

Given that your dd is positive and you're in the house with her I'd say its highly likely you've got mild cases. Certainly I'd suggest you wait 10 days from when you started feeling a bit rough before you go visiting any elderly friends or neighbours.

We are on tier 4 so won't be going anywhere!

Yes, I suspect it's covid, just thought it would probably be worse. Maybe we will get off lightly or maybe it will get worse.

It's mild to the point that in "normal" times we would both have gone to work for sure. I suppose that's why it spreads so easily.

Have you done the tests already? I'm pretty sure you're meant to do them just before posting so was struck by what you said about not posting them yet.

Sorry, don't mean to be patronising!

middleager · 26/12/2020 18:51

The three of us did not catch Covid after my 14 year old son did. He was symptomatic and did not have mild symptoms. We went to painstaking lengths though to avoid it due to one DS having asthma that is triggered by colds/viruses which always take a nasty turn on his lungs.

However, we have a few friends whose teenage DC have also had this, but mildly, or asymptomatic. The rest of the family did catch it, but with very mild symptoms too. I'd retest.

rosesinmygarden · 26/12/2020 19:04

You're absolutely right.

So no, of course we've not done the tests yet!

Will do them shortly before posting as per the instructions that came with them...

That's interesting thank you. We've not been distancing as we weren't aware dd was positive until Thursday even though she took the test Monday.

We are both relatively healthy and early 40s so hopefully it'll be a mild case.

Slightly frustrated we can't get to a test centre to find out sooner, hence ask8ng for others experiences.

Thanks everyone who has been supportive and helpful.

Even if you could get to a test centre, the results take around 48 hours so wouldn't be that much quicker. I've heard people get quite fast results with postal tests.

It does sound like Covid - both me and my DH had it and both had very mild symptoms, in fact he only tested because I'd got a positive result. Headache/fatigue/shivers sounds about right. I didn't really get the 'big 3' symptoms.

I'm also pretty sure both the kids had it before us (brought home from primary school) as a week before my symptoms started they had aches and pains and one had a weird rash - I didn't test as it didn't occur to me that it could be Covid at the time.

midnightstar66 · 27/12/2020 07:43

You probably have it - lots of people have none of the main symptoms and report what you are, however Tuesday will be pretty late for getting a positive result if it started on Wednesday so don't assume you were negative if of a year then says so. Ideally you want to test on day one of symptoms but after day 5 it's pretty pointless

Newnamedillydally · 27/12/2020 07:50

I think it’s highly likely you have it. My daughter was asked to SI from school due to a positive test. She had very mild symptoms for one evening so we had her tested and she came back as positive. As a result my husband and I took a test as feeling under the weather and both got positive results too. We did a drive through test and results came back in under 24 hours.

rosesinmygarden · 27/12/2020 08:20

Thanks everyone. We've managed to get walk in tests this morning at our very local testing centre after constantly trying yesterday. So we shall see.

I now have a tight chest and headache. Spent most of yesterday evening coughing but slept fine.

I'm still surprised there isn't a way to get the postal tests back quicker but I guess the postal workers need their break just as much as anyone else. Just a pity nothing was put in place to ensure people could return tests in a decent time window as I'm sure the data is needed.

They don't release the next days test slots til very late the evening before I had to wait til after 9pm to get ours so late night early morning is usually the only time. Good luck op - my results never did come back.

That's how I started and I tested positive three days after my husband started showing the same signs
Benjispruce2 · 27/12/2020 08:55

Op I got tested on Christmas Eve at 2pm and had results on Christmas Day 1pm. Very impressive turnaround. Good luck.

Where have you been for the past 9 months? Grin

I thought everyone knew that the testing system isn't perfect, there's are literally thousands of posts on here about the timescales, unpredictability, unreliability of the system.

Janefx40 · 27/12/2020 09:32

Good luck with your results. I'm sure you already checked this as you sound pretty thorough but I know our priority post boxes were doing collections even on Sundays and Bank Hols. Irrelevant now anyway since you got tested.

Hope you continue to just have mild symptoms

Stokey · 27/12/2020 09:41

@rosesinmygarden sounds very similar to us. My dd1 tested positive on 18th December and the rest of us got negative tests. By 22nd DH has a temperature and I had very sore throat and cold like symptoms. We did tests again and are both now positive. Dd2 also developed a temperature on 23rd but didn't bother getting her retested as just assume she's positive. I haven't had a temperature at all, just feeling quite fatigued and a bit achy, coldy.

AstridAv · 27/12/2020 09:50

Probably. My ds had it. I tested negative wheb he tested positive. A few days later I developed headache, slight cough, tickly throat and muscles aches. Tested positive. Symptoms did come and go.

rosesinmygarden · 27/12/2020 10:32

Our symptoms are definitely coming and going. I feel okay one minute, then rubbish again. DD still has a cough and seems a bit lethargic but then she is a lazy teenager so possibly not all Covid related.

@Janefx40 yes we checked. Lots of priority postboxes near us but the closest one taking Sunday collections is 20 odd miles away. We seem to be in a weird deadspot between areas where there are loads.

Oh well, clearly I'm really stupid then aren't I!

I always wonder what people get out of posting things like this. Do you enjoy feeling superior? Or do you enjoy trying to make other people feel bad?

Really strange response to someone asking advice when they and their family are I'll in my opinion.

We've previously sent back tests no problem and the system has worked very well from our experience. To have no priority postboxes being collected from in a 20 odd mile radius for 4 straight days is quite surprising, yes!
