Do you know anyone who’s had the vaccine?

I know two people aged over 80 and both have now been contacted with regards to having the vaccine. One of them is due to have his tomorrow. Have the elderly people you know been contacted/had the vaccine yet?

OP posts:

I don't personally know anyone. But a pop up covid vaccination centre has opened at the cricket club next to my house. It was rammed yday

NeurologicallySpeaking · 23/12/2020 08:02

Yes one set of grandparents had it last week. No other 80+ year olds I know have been called though

FippertyGibbett · 23/12/2020 08:05

They are giving 4 month contracts to the nurses they are taking on to give the Covid jabs. That should give you an idea as to how long they think it will take.

OneInEight · 23/12/2020 08:06

My Uncle (80) yes. My dm (84) still waiting for the call although some in her village have been done. Difference might be my dm lives in an area with a higher proportion of over eighties.

Dr John Campbell (my go to person for everything corona related) said whilst it will benefit people individually at the moment, it won't start to really impact the population as a whole until about March. So normal methods ie hands, face, space and ventilate are still crucial until then.

I've had it. 56 and healthy. Many friends have had it too. Live in the UAE and it's free here for everyone providing you are local or resident.
No side effects. Easy to access too. I was in and out in 20 minutes.
Had an antibody test, then blood pressure and health questions. Then saw a doctor and more questions. Then had the vaccination.

@peasoup8

At the present rate of half a million so far it will take well over a year to vaccinate everyone, so not that impressive.

We don’t need to vaccinate everyone though do we? Once a significant proportion of the nation has been vaccinated then life will be so much safer for all of us. There are 3.2 million people aged over 80 in the UK so they’ve made a good start IMO!

Dh saw something on the news last night that indicated with the new strain we may need to vaccinate more people than previously to reach herd immunity/ be able to relax SD.

Vivana · 23/12/2020 08:25

I'm still waiting and so are the residents in my care home I work at

TheFairyCaravan · 23/12/2020 08:28

DS2 and DDIL have had it. They’re both nurses. They had absolutely no side effects at all.

BrigitsBigKnickers · 23/12/2020 08:33

Yes my DF had his first dose yesterday and MiL last Saturday ( both 82)

ChaBishkoot · 23/12/2020 08:35

We are in the USA. DH had his first jab yesterday. He’s a frontline PCP working with COVID patients (mainly homeless people) for our city’s health authority. He’s been working in full PPE for months now . No side effects and because he’s quite a shy person refused to have himself photographed as everyone else had done. The kids were a bit disappointed so he’s promised to get a photo next time when he gets his second dose. I am very very relieved.

ChaBishkoot · 23/12/2020 08:36

Relieved about the vaccine not the photo!

Scarby9 · 23/12/2020 08:37

My next door neighbour's mum (86 and shielding), but not her dad (90).
My dad (84 and shielding) has been called for the 29th December, but not my mum (85 with dementia but not shielding). I can see the priorities being applied.

Useruseruserusee · 23/12/2020 08:38

My Nan is late 80s and looking forward to being contacted about hers, we are in Tier 4.

I had to get a test earlier in the week and the testing centre had a separate area outside for vaccinations. It was full of people queuing for the vaccine, lovely to see.

rhowton · 23/12/2020 08:38

My DHs Nan who turned 90 in February.

ChaBishkoot · 23/12/2020 08:40

My MIL is in her 70s but has a severe respiratory condition. She will be vaccinated soon. My FIL is in his 80s but healthy so he’ll be a bit later as I understand it.
DH had the Moderna vaccine as I understand it, not the Pfizer one. We can’t wait for the in laws to have their vaccine as well- they have missed out on so much with the kids and us this year.

CMOTDibbler · 23/12/2020 08:41

FIL (in his 80's, living with MIL who is CEV and having palliative chemo atm) had his first yesterday. MIL could have had hers, but they needed to talk to the oncologist today about it when she goes to have the chemo

Unescorted · 23/12/2020 08:41

My Dad had it - no side effects.

How2Help · 23/12/2020 08:45

Relieved about the vaccine not the photo!

This clarification really amused me Grin

Fizbosshoes · 23/12/2020 08:47

My PIL and my BILs mum had theirs last saturday (they're mid-late 80s) and a HCP I know, and both her parents have also had it.

OP I too am encouraged that 500,000 doses have been administered especially as this is the first vaccine (of hopefully 2 or 3) and logistically the most difficult to transport and store....but lots of people feel everything corona virus related is negative.

Back in summer: a vaccine is likely
Negative MN: I'm afraid there wont be a vaccine
-Vaccine is approved
Negative MN: the gov are rubbish they havent ordered enough.
-NHS start vaccination programme
Negative MN: why wont they tell us how many people have been vaccinated
-500,000 people vaccinated in 2 weeks
Negative MN: that's nowhere near enough it will take 300 years to vaccinate everyone

And so on and so forth...

toolatetooearly · 23/12/2020 08:48

Yup, my mum had the first injection last weekend

Nomaigai · 23/12/2020 08:50

I'm in a country where a vaccination has been available to certain people for months (eg healthcare workers) and to everyone who can take it (over 18, not pregnant etc) for around two weeks (maybe a bit more). My neighbours have all had it (and a good proportion volunteered for Phase III trials like my household did) but that isn't typical from what I'm seeing. This worries me - once the vaccination program moves away from people who are personally at high risk (risk factors /occupational exposure) there might not be much uptake. This isn't helped by the fact that people keep saying the vaccines don't stop transmission - it's not that it's known it doesn't, it's that there isn't the data to know either way (yet).

Wigeon · 23/12/2020 08:51

Yes - two of DH’s uncles, one of my elderly relatives, and a hospital doctor friend of mine. 🎉

QuantumJump · 23/12/2020 08:52

My dad and uncle (both over 80) have got appointments coming up in the next few days.

Fizzydrinks123 · 23/12/2020 08:52

Yes - couple of my dad's friends
