To think Macron is ridiculous

These poor lorry drivers are very isolated anyway due to the nature of their jobs. The chances of them catching this new super strain and transmitting it are even slimmer than most people’s very slim chances. Macron’s decision to close the border is a hysterical overreaction and no doubt politically (Brexit) motivated. Open the borders and let them through!

Brexit is all Britain's fault, OP. ALL.

@LunaLula83

He is stupid. He bought down the age of sexusl consent to 15 because he was 15 when he slept with his teacher, now wife. He made it compulary for kids to go to school age 3 and he's banning homeschooling..........he doesnt even have kids
Perhaps the age of consent was already 15? and he has actually made it easier to prosecute with tougher charges?

Banning home schooling to prevent islamic radicalism.

Its nursery at 3, effects 2.4% of kids as vast majority are enrolled by 3.

Dont ever let what you read in the 'Express get in the way of the truth.

Macron is having to ban lorry transport for 48hrs to allow their experts to assess the risks, no more than you would be demanding if this new stain was endemic in Paris.

@CremeEggThief

Brexit is all Britain's fault, OP. ALL.
Well it is all related, isn’t it?

It’s why EU countries are paying £10 per dose less for the Pfizer vaccine than the U.K. is. That’s an awful lot of money. What are we at 68, thousand million? Multiplied by £10? Over half a billion pounds thrown away.

Most things now are about Brexit including the lorry park that has destroyed a lot of Kent to accommodate 4,000 lorries. The Hampshire lorry park on the A31 has just had lots of portaloos delivered.

LynetteScavo · 22/12/2020 08:50

@LunaLula83 He bought down the age of sexusl consent to 15

Really?

If the news had broken in France that there was a mutant strain spreading fast in the Calais region, people would have been shouting for Boris to close our border and never mind the lorry drivers stuck on the other side.

Not quite the same as Dover.

ChloeDeckTheHalls · 22/12/2020 08:52

Wow. Tying it to schools opening in the UK is a bit far fetched. Why only in Kent? Does the virus only evolve in the grammar system?

In fairness, this very issue of children being more prevalent with this strain and the issue with schools, is currently being studied urgently

GetOffYourHighHorse · 22/12/2020 08:52

'And if France doesn’t already have widespread infection with this mutation already, I’d be surprised. They just haven’t done the research that we have.'

I cannot wait for when the EU catches up science wise we find out it was identified there back in Sep. Kent! I mean as a pp said it was of course imported. Macron for once, able to enjoy a bit of power.

jasjas1973 · 22/12/2020 08:53

@StormzyinaTCup

It was identified here as we do extensive genome work which the EU doesn't. I bet it came from Europe, it was only a couple of weeks ago France had numbers in the 30k region

Yes, I read similar too that we have been doing extensive genome work that is not being done to the same degree (if at all) in other countries.

That doesn't add up, if they lack the research capability, how did they discover the Mink new strain?

and why aren't we offering our genome expertise to other countries and working together? send us test samples from weeks ago and we can find out definitively.

However, it does seem a bit coincidental that the new strain appears to have first occurred in Kent.

Kaliorphic · 22/12/2020 08:53

Not quite the same as Dover.

What's your point?

Barbie222 · 22/12/2020 08:54

Wow. Tying it to schools opening in the UK is a bit far fetched. Why only in Kent? Does the virus only evolve in the grammar system?

Maybe it just thrives in an environment where it can be passed back and forth at will, unchecked, with a large host reservoir, which is what we have made our children into in the UK. Maybe it might even mutate into a version that can do this even easier. It's much more likely to be able to do that if such an environment is at hand, which it is in the UK, but not in France where children wear masks in the classroom. So odds are it'll appear here, rather than France, but don't let the facts and crap geography about the UK ports get in the way of a bit of foreigner bashing.

DillonPanthersTexas · 22/12/2020 08:55

Brexit is ridiculous and we deserve everything that Europe throw at us.

Who is this 'we'?

This is the kind of sneery bollocks that you read BTL in the Guardian.

I voted remain but I just don't understand the feeble mindset that actively wishes maximum hardship upon the UK just so you can smugly say 'I told you so'. Grow the fuck up.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 22/12/2020 08:55

'people would have been shouting for Boris to close our border and never mind the lorry drivers stuck on the other side.'

Unessential travel yes. Freight is essential and that hasn't ever even stopped until now. Perfectly possible for a man sat in a cab, on his own to SD 🙄. Even at the other end they don't tend to go out socialising with customs staff.

Unescorted · 22/12/2020 08:57

That would be the economic advantage of being in a large trading bloc.... like the one the population of the UK voted to leave. That is not Mr Macron's fault.

ChloeDeckTheHalls · 22/12/2020 08:58

and why aren't we offering our genome expertise to other countries and working together?

The U.K. already has shared and is working together. I posted a link further up.

notimagain · 22/12/2020 08:58

^^ Fundamentally..this..

Even last week people were whinging on about how the UK should have shut their borders and stopped flights in January . Hmm

Yet when the PM and Hancock talk up an "out of control virus" at the weekend in the south east UK the Dutch, the Germans, the French et.al. It's all spun as the foreigners, and most especially the French, are being utterly unreasonable on putting in restrictions at their borders to give their own authorities time to work out WTAF is going on in the UK

HelloMissus · 22/12/2020 08:58

So is it more likely that this mutation appeared coincidently in Kent rather than say Nottingham which was Covid capital not long ago, or say London which has the most school children per square mile than anywhere in Europe?

Or is it more likely that it arrived in Kent from ...

randomer · 22/12/2020 08:59

It may indeed be that Macron is ridiculous but compared to our shambles he is a demi God.

Unescorted · 22/12/2020 09:00

They are assessing the risk of allowing drivers to travel with their freight. The closure is temporary while they do that. Every government has a duty of care to it's own population. It is ours that has forgotten that.
Beccasb · 22/12/2020 09:02

So many questions for people who think like you OP.

Why do people who think like you always want the British borders to close though? Bet you’ve posted comments like that on social media.
What would you want if there was a new strain in Brittany?
Why do you think one man is in charge of France/the EU?

MrsPernicious · 22/12/2020 09:03

It was identified here as we do extensive genome work which the EU doesn't

It was identified here as we do extensive genome work at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) which the EU funded (before Brexit). Luckily they also funded labs in other countries.

Yes, this variant seems to have started here, there is widely available research if you want to check. There are even threads on MN with accurate information about it.

Macron is trying to act in the best interest of his people. Not something that our politicians are renowned for.

To the PP who she they did not even know the name of their MEP. please don't ever bother voting again. Had you ever even attempted to inform yourself, you would have discovered that you had several MEPs and were free to contact any of them that you wished to.

Forgetmenot157 · 22/12/2020 09:04

This whole border thing is just ridiculous... This strain has been here since September... If they honestly think its not ravaged around Europe already than they are just as stupid as our government.

It is defnitely a "this is what will happen if we don't get a deal" show by the bloc using the pandemic for political gain!

jasjas1973 · 22/12/2020 09:04

@ChloeDeckTheHalls

and why aren't we offering our genome expertise to other countries and working together?

The U.K. already has shared and is working together. I posted a link further up.

If so, then we know the new strain didn't originate in europe? so Macron is surely being reasonable.

If the new strain was discovered by France, i would expect no less from Johnson, until we could assess the new strain.

This idea lorry drivers just stay in their cabs is completely wrong, they use m/w service stations, local shops, cafes, toilets, garages and returning EU drivers will be going home to their families.
