To think Macron is ridiculous

These poor lorry drivers are very isolated anyway due to the nature of their jobs. The chances of them catching this new super strain and transmitting it are even slimmer than most people’s very slim chances. Macron’s decision to close the border is a hysterical overreaction and no doubt politically (Brexit) motivated. Open the borders and let them through!
@jasjas1973 France is doing better than the uk by the absolute tiniest of margins. We have the 6th highest deaths worldwide and they are number 7 right now.
Well aware of that but i was making the point that Johnson is popular despite an even worse toll than france and our excess deaths is the worst in europe, so don't understand your shock that Macron is liked.

Both leaders have totally failed, but Macron doesn't want to make it worse still, so bans ALL peoples from UK.

Why aren't we doing as well as Germany or Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand ?

Snog · 22/12/2020 21:07

I see it as yet another poor decision by Macron

ListeningQuietly · 22/12/2020 21:08

JasJas
Manston has been the backup for Stack and Brock for YEARS

Well, I would say he has made things considerably worse in another direction.

Defenbaker · 22/12/2020 21:20

The UK has a much higher population density than France, and many other European countries. The UK also has a higher proportion of elderly people than many countries, and elderly people are more likely to die from Covid. These are the main reasons why our death count has been higher than many other countries (along with some non compliance from the public, on matters such as mask wearing and socialising against guidance).

jasjas1973 · 22/12/2020 21:29

@ListeningQuietly

JasJas Manston has been the backup for Stack and Brock for YEARS
Doubtful as Brock was only recently designed in the event of a no deal brexit- first thought about in September 2018.

Land purchased in November 2020.

It has little or no facilities, still being built.

ListeningQuietly · 22/12/2020 21:35

Brock : Work began in September 2018
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Brock

Manston has been an emergency car park since 2015
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manston_Airport

The DoT does not own Manston

jasjas1973 · 22/12/2020 21:40

Thats what i said LQ, sept 2018, so not years.

Never actually used in Operation Stack and the govt brought 27 acres of it as part of no deal planning.

I never said they owned it.

ListeningQuietly · 22/12/2020 21:41

September 2018 is over two years Wink

jasjas1973 · 22/12/2020 22:01

@ListeningQuietly

September 2018 is over two years Wink
Go on then, i'll play.....

Still not years - 2 is a couple, not a few and definitely NOT YEARS :) esp as it wasn't operational then or apparently not now either.

ListeningQuietly · 22/12/2020 22:05

Manston has been used for trucks on and off going back to the 80's

its been regularly used over the last 10 years

knowing it could be needed LONG predated COVID

Birdladybird · 22/12/2020 22:21

@Snog Macron is thought of favourably in France.

notimagain · 23/12/2020 00:16

@Snog

My SIL lives in France and says the French are pretty happy with how Macron has been dealing with coronavirus which I find astonishing given their poor statistics.
I think a fair percentage of the French population are happy enough with the Macron/Castex/Veran combination when it comes to expertise on matters Covid related.. FYI Veran, the Health Minister was a medical doctor (neurologist).

I also think there's a bit of a danger of people thinking what appears in the UK MSM is an accurate reflection of sentiment elsewhere (that's me being polite)

As far as statistics go I'm not sure which stats you are looking at, they're not great but they're not that bad...FWIW this evening's stats:

11795 new cases in last 24 hours ( yes, we can argue about the testing being done).
386 deaths in the last 24 hours.
8887 new hospital admissions in the last 7 days, with 1186 in ITU.
386 deaths in last 24 hours, running total 61702.

MrsMiaWallis · 23/12/2020 06:24

Our delivery driver (delivering components for our business) got to us! He's got a few more deliveries to go, then he's on the long road back to Romania.

He does NOT like Macron 😜

Graciebobcat · 23/12/2020 06:32

Macron has managed quite a feat to make himself more hated across Europe than Johnson.

Serendipity26 · 23/12/2020 07:09

I don’t understand how a negative test at this stage would make it ok for the truckers to go to France. Surely if they’ve come over in the last few days, any COVID they’ve picked up will not show up yet anyway?

Eve · 23/12/2020 07:23

@Girlyracer

Why do people who opposed Brexit and live in the UK, want us to suffer? Baffles me. Comments like "We deserve what we get"! Isn't a better attitude to try and make it work. Some very spiteful people indeed. Pathetic.
That’s rich considering the suffering leaving the EU is going to cause the country in terms of economic impact and job losses. You chose to impose this now own up to the consequences.
Nc135 · 23/12/2020 07:27

Another remainer here. But I really hope everyone can now grow up and make brexit work for Britain. I would love to see this country thrive. We now need to come together and help each other.

SOmuchsparkle · 23/12/2020 07:35

It's not Macron's fault!!!
Brexit & the handling of the virus in the UK are a fucking shit show.
God I hate this government! 🤬

Strawberrycreamsundae · 23/12/2020 07:42

The ridiculous thing is that lorry drivers stay in their cabs, according to EU COVID rules, at every stage of loading and unloading so we’re unlikely to pass on to other workers. Yes, they could pass it onto their families but I greatly suspect this new variant arose on the continent and that it’s already well established there.
It seems that Macron needs very little excuse to start stamping his foot, no wonder he’s so unpopular with many.

EmmanuelleMakro · 23/12/2020 08:13

I wonder what the French think of Macron
That he is a posturing little twat whose only positive characteristic is that he is not Marine ale Pen who might well have got in last time
Something like Boris having got in because wasn’t Jeremy Corbyn.
Or Biden getting in because he wasn’t Trump.
Better of two bad options.
And like Boris (tho not Biden) EM gives good voxpoppery.
EM let the gilets jaunes keep the country at a standstill - maybe people here in the UK didn’t notice that? Pandemic has bought him some time, but he is on his way out.

3asAbird · 23/12/2020 08:20

Hes got over his covid quickly
I was amazed when reported how close and cuddly he was to other world leaders.

Hes being a dick. I think French teachers threatened or went on strike in Paris.
France seems have regular strikes.

How many French truck drivers affected by this.

Whats % trade between us and France is it mainly cheee/ wine and some produce as well as tourism?

Maybe we should invest in new ports and ways crossing.
I think its opportunism and I thought eu said lift it and he hasn't.
He will just piss off other European companies for sure.
France haven't done that much better than us.
Apparently he's been as psychotic about schools as Boris has.
Also under French constitution can't ban gathering in private homes.
Theh had airlift some patients to Germany their health care was overwhelmed.
Always baffled how curfews have huge effect.
Didn't know french had their own vaccine.

All I know is from UK msm but he seems be making brexit negotiations more difficult.

Also quite random why has Europe not got decent genome testing.
Also have the regulators approved and rolled out any vaccines to any UK countries.
Problem is eu is vast numbers and would take so much time roll out and vaccinate all eu citizens.
Maybe leaving has been good for us in terms vaccines its one thing we doing well not much else .
I think in the end other countries will catch up we lost a lot vulnerable 1st wave deaths 2nd wave not as high.

It will take time work out where the virus originated.

Feel so sorry for those lorry drivers.
Think this will backfire in macron once hes damaged the French economy.

MrsMiaWallis · 23/12/2020 08:26

I'm surprised Germany hasn't, or Switzerland. Guess we are just better at it.

She is right though. I did not vote for this shitshow either but to actively wish hardship and misery on people as some kind of collective punishment is a special kind of spiteness and batshitery.

Yes, its actually really odd.

I just hope its people spouting bollocks on here otherwise they must be utterly miserable in day to day real life.
