List is growing longer. Wow. We're being well fucked now.
@amicissimma agree. How do they know it originated there or was brought into Kent.
Just been chatting to my other half about this too.

But do we really believe that europe can't discover a new strain when they were pretty hot on identifying the new 'mink strain in Denmark?

However, pretty remiss of the UK to ID a new strain in September and then not tell anyone else! though not surprising.

Either way, lets hope the vaccines still work against it.

BalaamsAss · 20/12/2020 19:27

@Pomegranatemolasses the Stormont meeting is at the request of Sinn Fein, SDLP, Alliance & UUP and is in response to the new strain and Boris’ new restrictions on Christmas - the request for the meeting came before ROI closed their border.

I would be absolutely delighted if (for once) we acted as a whole island to protect ALL Irish people, but we all know the Dupers will never close the border to mainland UK. Everything is far too political for them.

Rudolphian · 20/12/2020 19:29

@AnyFucker

Let's hope the UK govt haven't overstated the "new variant" risk in order to save face when they were forced to add a tier 4 for the SE and alter the Xnas guidelines then

What a fuck up that would be...

That's what's I was thinking. They said to save face when they locked down but didnt realise the effect it would have on the international stage.

Yes anyfucker - I'm sure it's just the UK government making it up

You might have a point if that is what I had said

It crossed my mind.

I'm sure it exists but was definitely a handy tool to scare people into better compliance with the rules and swerve the Xmas free for all.

Growth is accelerating though?

Flights from U.K. stopped

It’s not a small thing otherwise why the increase?

RudolphToldRedNoseNotSymptom · 20/12/2020 20:03

Ignore those who deny it exists. Lol.

@MarshaBradyo We saw rapid growth in many areas of the UK at different times; Derry and Strabane in Northern Ireland, Leicester, Manchester, Liverpool and Hull. These areas were higher than London at some time.

Was it this fast?

I don’t have the graphs or stats but it seems to be highly accelerated

Hopefully someone will post numbers

SilverGlitterBaubles · 20/12/2020 20:14

Pretty convenient that there will be little or no travel to Europe when post Brexit rules come into forceHmm A gift for the border control of things are quieter.

RaggieDolls · 20/12/2020 20:18

@Bacter I would join you at the hat eating dinner but... you know.... no mixing.

Of course it's rife in continental Europe.

Mrsbrownsgargoyle · 20/12/2020 20:23

It will already be all over Europe. Banning travel from UK will buy them a week or so at best. It will be all over the UK very soon.

VenusOfWillendorf · 20/12/2020 20:25

Its great that ROI are stopping flights from the UK, but there is no chance Arlene will. She doesnt give a shit about protecting people in Ireland.
She would rather see people die in an ambulance queue than face the fact that that NI is not actually in England.

RedToothBrush · 20/12/2020 20:40

@OpheliasCrayon

Can we buy things from abroad? Will they still come here on like.. oh I don't know what planes they get here on! (I'm being serious... I have an order coming from France Blush)
Good luck with that...

....its not coming before Christmas if its not already in the UK.

Rudolphian · 20/12/2020 23:15

I think they've really fucked up.
They bigged it up so the public would accept the tier 4 lockdown but they didnt expect the lockdown the other countries would force upon them.
I really believe they needed an excuse to lockdown before Christmas so they embellished the truth.
They just didnt realise the backlash and now freight is blocked from France and people panicking about the supermarkets running out of food.
They have really fucked up.

Nc135 · 20/12/2020 23:57

Scientists are worried about this new strain. Read the strain thread on here to dig into the science and find out why. The best and most informative Covid thread I have ever read. And full of facts.

MG2020 · 21/12/2020 00:07

Watching the news right now, 48 hours atm. Boris is holding a Cobra meeting early today. Let's hope all is sorted soon and everyone is up to speed from lessons in March.

VulvaPerson · 21/12/2020 01:02

@RudolphToldRedNoseNotSymptom

First noticed in September might I add - in Kent. 3 em days, no sorry, weeks, no sorry, MONTHS ago.
This is why the flight thing makes little sense to me. It will already be everywhere.

It reminds me a bit of how so many thought banning flights from china would mean the virus stayed there, despite it not being picked up on til January and patient X being in Autumn, or something along those lines.

VulvaPerson · 21/12/2020 01:03

(I could understand them banning on account of our dreadful figures though, just not on account of the 'new but not new' strain)

MrsPernicious · 21/12/2020 01:10

How do they know this new strain started here?

Seems that scientists across the world have been tracking new strains.

Yep, exactly Hmm

A head of government announces that his country has a super-virus and the country as a whole is surprised that other countries want to avoid it? How strange - not.

TurquoiseBaubles · 21/12/2020 01:21

Oh, and what Rudolphian said.

I'm sure there is a new variant. There are new variants everywhere; that's what viruses do. I was reading yesterday about one in SA, there were more in, I think Thailand and India recently. But unless a new variant is (a) resistant to treatment or (b) able to outwit vaccines it's fairly irrelevant. Unless used by a politician to excuse his fuckwittedness and lack of forward-thinking Hmm

MercyBooth · 21/12/2020 01:28

I dont deny it exists but i agree with @AnyFucker and @Rudolphian

I think they overstated it to try and scare people into compliance. And its backfired in the most spectacular way. Metro had a big headline MUTANT COVID. Boris and Chums have now also finally learned that using the MSM to scare ppl has completely recoiled right into their faces.
