Going on holiday

Not sure how to create a poll So if you could please share your opinion.

Our holiday to a very safe destination had not been cancelled. Flight still going ahead.
We had been isolating for over a week and paid for expensive pre travel PCRs for all of us.
If our PCRs are all negative, why should we not go?
How is this fair?!?
I worked from home and hardly had seen any people all year.
We had not been anywhere for the whole year.
Desperate for some sunshine and walks.

You are looking for permission to break the law as I understand it

likeamillpond · 20/12/2020 15:59

@Didiusfalco

I’d be worried about my return flight and I imagine British travellers won’t be particularly welcome abroad. My friend works for the foreign office and she said most of those needing to be repatriated as the pandemic first kicked in were idiots who hadn’t read the room properly or didn’t care.
This. I would feel a bit embarrassed at being a Brit holiday maker from a Tier 4 area. I wouldn't imagine the locals would be very impressed. Although if you're thick skinned and don't care about anyone except yourself Go for it!
BEANBAG765 · 20/12/2020 16:00

What bugs me is the post code lottery. Why someone living 15mins from me can do whatever they like?
The flights will not be cancelled because my next tier neighbour can fly.
This means the unlucky will simply have to forget their money while others are not affected.
What happened to “We are all in this together “?
Obviously we are not.

What bugs me is that people think that illegal is something that be mitigated by feeling hard done by, a sob story and the expectation that you'll probably get away with it.

likeamillpond · 20/12/2020 16:03

It amazes me why anyone would risk booking a holiday abroad during this year from hell
It's madness and a huge risk.

Yeah it's shit. But it's been shit for those in Leicester who have been in lockdown since March. That's also a postcode lottery.

Your mistake was.... booking a holiday.

likeamillpond · 20/12/2020 16:07

@MrsTerryPratchett

Going from Tier 4 to a very safe place.

It's all a bit cunty, isn't it?

Very true
Doraismissing · 20/12/2020 16:08

My dd is due to fly back to Canada on the 2nd (she is dual citizen) to back to uni. The guidance isn't clear where this is allowed or not. Wish hey would be clearer or at least give a contact number where w can get clarity. As usual it's a major fuckup

BEANBAG765 · 20/12/2020 16:08

@forwardsbackwardsrebound We booked the holiday in January. No one knew at that time.

Students are normally exempt, I would class this as essential travel, but yes, the lack of clarity is just ridiculous.

It sucks, I'm sorry you have to cancel.

speakout · 20/12/2020 16:15

It's not just a case of you having a negative test.

As a human you are a potential for infection, to become infected at any point you can pick up and spread .
Airport lounges, coffee shops, aircraft, hotels, lobbies, cafes.
You are putting yourself and many others at risk.
We need to minimise contact.

I think anyone deciding on a holiday right now is hugely selfish.

Bridecilla · 20/12/2020 16:16

I wouldn't- there's no guarantee you'll get back. My brother is meant to be flying home from working in Norway on the 23rd. All flights cancelled now and he's stuck there alone.

canyon2000 · 20/12/2020 16:16

Looking for excuses to break the law is one of the reasons the virus is spreading out of control. You will be contributing to this.

A sob story? Have a bloody heart fgs. Of course they should not be going but they booked before covid and have probably been focusing on this to get through the shit show that is 2020. To lose money and the much needed break must be devastating. Its hardly a sob story.

Op I really feel for you. I can understand why you are looking for a possible loophole but I don't think there is one if you are Tier 4. You must be so disappointed Sad

cheninblanc · 20/12/2020 16:21

I'd be more concerned about getting back, which is looking unlikely from many countries right now

FourTeaFallOut · 20/12/2020 16:25

No, I'm all out of heart over foot stomping about holidays and wails of it's not fair. And I'm saying this as someone who will inevitably lose a January holiday booked before corona. It's just another one to chalk up to tough shit.

Dual citizens can travel but have to isolate in Canada.

How disappointing, is it possible to move the flights to later in the year, probably much later to be on the safe side so that you don't lose all the money. It may yet be cancelled as there are a lot of travel bans happening now. So many will be badly out of pocket because of all this.
baublesbaubleseverywhere · 20/12/2020 16:55

@BEANBAG765 so you know you can't go as it would be illegal.

I'd hope that if you'd booked at holiday in the midst of a global pandemic, then you would have also bought insurance to cover you for situations such as this, which were really that unpredictable.

Musicaldilemma · 20/12/2020 16:56

If it is illegal for you to go (ie you live in tier 4) and something happens abroad, you could find yourself with no insurance cover.

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 20/12/2020 17:14

There's only a few posts pointing out that travelling from Tier 4 to "a Very safe area" is truly a shitty way to behave.
You may have no idea when you board the plane if you are currently infected nor will you know about your fellow passengers.
If you're in a hotel and will be having staff coming in to clean up after you then how would you feel ? knowing you could be infecting some poor soul who is paid peanuts for picking up people's dirty pants and she probably won't get sickness pay if she catches it from you.
That's one scenario. There are many. All are irrelevant now as it's banned. But you know that, don't you Op? I get you're devastated and I would be too but unfortunately we've just got to get on with it. Nothing's fair in life as you already know.

LovingLen · 20/12/2020 17:15

OP booked last January before the pandemic, it's posted upthread. Lots of people booked then, we booked a holiday in January for last summer and lost £400 deposit.

B3ttyBoop · 20/12/2020 17:17

I'd say it's not worth the risk. Yes it's good to have something to look forward to and losing out on your holiday is miserable but there's alot that could go wrong here. Even with a negative test, one of you could still be carrying the virus. You may find it difficult to get back into the country. This new strain of Covid is doubling every 7 days which is scarily high so chances are it's only a matter of time before we all get the highest level of restrictions. 2020 has been a shit show but it will pass and you will get another chance for a break without all these complications.

AnyFucker · 20/12/2020 17:20

^What happened to “We are all in this together “?

Nope, we are not. I booked a holiday in January for April. Cancelled due to lockdown #1. Moved it to November. Cancelled due to lockdown #2. Moved it again to the middle of next year now at my own expense because Ryanair are still flying. It's shit.

But risking taking a new variant out of the UK is a step too far. Suck it up, I am afraid. Alog with many other people.
