Having witnessed the start of our rollout of COVID vaccinations this weekend I feel like shouting this from the rooftops. The work and organisation that has been put into what is a logistical nightmare is unbelievable . All in a short period of time.
The majority of this work has been done at grassroots levels by staff who have gone above and beyond.
But it has been made worthwhile by the reaction of the people who received their vaccines. I honestly think we have so much to learn from our over 80s. They have been isolated and often frightened for almost a year. The tears of joy and gratitude we have witnessed from them on being offered the vaccine has been overwhelming at times. Even those told they have to wait another few weeks have been stoic and undemanding. There's been little mention of Facebook conspiracy theories just gratitude and relief
Sorry for going on but it's been a long time since I and my colleagues have felt such job satisfaction

That’s lovely to hear. It must be a welcome sense of being part of a solution this year Flowers

Mindymomo · 20/12/2020 11:12

Totally agree with everything you say, well done to the NHS.

middleager · 20/12/2020 11:13

Thank you Flowers

movingstars · 20/12/2020 11:13

A huge thank you to you and your colleagues

I loved seeing the elderly arriving at our local Covid vaccination centre. I just wish there had been some thought put into the car park for them. (It's the local leisure centre, and they are using the same car park as all the gym goers and the school children arriving for swimming lessons. There are two car parks, so the nearest one could have easily been reserved for them and the gym/pool use the 'overflow' one.)
Everyone involved in the development, manufacture, testing, logistics, and delivery of the vaccine should be proud.

Baggiegirl · 20/12/2020 11:17

Thank you all 💐. I'm normally a bit of an old cynic 😂 but feel quite emotional about it all today

Wonderful. It’s amazing what can be done when things are in the hands of people who actually know what they’re doing!

We had a similar problem with people queueing in the rain initially yesterday. Soon sorted out. Hopefully as we go along we'll learn fand improve 😃

I have been seeing first hand all the behind the scenes work going on, outpatient clinics changing constantly to make sure we get to see the most urgent patients ASAP. It sometimes feels as though only the frontline staff get the recognition but our trust last weeks gave everyone employed by them a £25 shopping voucher with a lovely thank you message. Completely unexpected and very much appreciated by all. Reminded me that my colleagues and I regardless of being an ICU consultant, Porter, cleaner, clinic admin or health records clerk are in it together and striving for the same outcome.
It's shame when we get abusive patients on the phone threatening all sorts but the polite and patient ones make up for it.

Yes totally agree! Well done to you and your team. Real life is so often the complete opposite of what you see and hear on social media.

There is a GP surgery where my friend works that has achieved 100% vaccine take up. They didn’t have time for letters to get there via post so they hand delivered 975 letters with the help of volunteers and all 975 came and got jabbed.

It was an epic admin effort as well as brilliant work by the medical staff. I am so impressed!

Backbee · 20/12/2020 11:40

I think it's amazing, knowing how hard and how much red tape there is to navigate to get anything organised, especially in a situation such as this, its an incredible achievement.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 20/12/2020 11:43

@Baggiegirl that's fantastic! It is emotional & I think our older population is indeed made of sterner stuff! & mostly blessed with not being subject to social media.

@TheCountessofFitzdotterel. Wow, that's fabulous!! 💐

I have to go to my local surgery to have some stitches removed tomorrow. They have staff who have tested positive, I'm tempted to remove my own stitches!!

Nc135 · 20/12/2020 11:45

So nice to hear. Thanks for posting OP. We all need some good news.

That's amazing. Was about to add. I know that GP receptionists are often maligned on here ( most often unjustly in my opinion). Well there's an army of them working throughout this weekend to perform vital roles.

Great thread and a real antidote to all the unhappiness around at the moment. Thank you OP Flowers

WorraLiberty · 20/12/2020 12:07

That's lovely to hear OP Thanks

Unfortunately it's a complete shit show in my borough, with very elderly people being made to queue in freezing cold car parks with no seating or shelter, while the appointments run up to an hour behind.

My 88 year old dad queued for 40 minutes in the freezing cold, except he couldn't even wait in the warm car because the parking facilities were 10 minutes walk away.

Then with no explanation, a security guard came out to tell them vaccines were cancelled and for them all to go home.

He ended up taking to his bed because his legs were so sore and he was frozen to the bone....while I contacted the borough's head of health care to complain.

Thankfully he's booked in for early January, at a place with a car park, gazebo and seating so fingers crossed.

WorraLiberty · 20/12/2020 12:08

Sorry, I feel like I've put a bit of a downer on the thread Blush

Just to clarify, all of this was the fault of the council and not the NHS.
