When does the Scottish travel ban start?

Can't see any dates on the gov website.

Are people going to be stopped by police when crossing? How is it going to work?

@thennek it clearly states on the Scottish government website that the rules about traveling are both ways the wording is . It’s not permitted and is breaking the law

This applies to people who live in Scotland and to people who live in any of these countries who are thinking of coming to Scotland.

Peppafrig · 20/12/2020 03:04

You check the website of the country you are traveling too and follow their rules. If I was traveling to Wales I would go on their website for the rules.

Peppafrig · 20/12/2020 03:06

In fact it actually says on the UK government website that the travel restrictions are different for Scotland , Wales and NI and links to their websites to show what the rules are .

Scottishskifun · 20/12/2020 07:24

@thennek

having just spent about 2hrs looking through government guidelines,yes there is a travel ban on scots travelling to other uk nations.But there is nothing saying other uk nations cant travel to scotland.There is no restrictions on some1 travelling to scotland on any of the other uk nations websites,apart from what was introduced tonight in england.The border ban takes effect from 26th december,so surely until then you can travel to scotland.I have also looked into extended family bubbles,it states any individual living alone can create a family bubble,it does not state where they are from as long as they live alone,and do not have another bubble. So depending on how you interpret the rules they are very unclear From what ive read anybody from the other 3 nations can visit scotland up until the 25th december and would only have to leave if they were not in that persons extended family bubble.
Read the legislation, as its legislation it applies to anyone who is living or coming in to Scotland. Bit like saying drink driving law doesn't apply as my son is travelling from NI........ NOPE still applies Xmas HmmXmas Biscuit

You clearly know all this though given your son was due to travel and stay for the previous festive window dates only.

It's up to your son if he wishes to break the law by travelling and then staying with you like anything else in society. You may want to think about what his job role is and if it has larger consequences for him then missing Christmas day. For instance I would face disciplinary action as a public sector worker.

You said in one of your earlier posts that you were clutching at straws this was accurate.

Peppafrig · 20/12/2020 07:38

Reports in the media are suggesting she is coming down hard on people traveling to Scotland against the rules and is looking at policing it more. Monitoring trains and planes etc. You must know what your saying makes no sense. Why would Nicola stop people traveling out of Scotland into the rest of the UK but have a free for all into Scotland ?

DecemberDiana · 20/12/2020 11:20

Oh yes she is looking at ways to enforce this law now. Earlier on the police said they would not be stopping people.

Interesting how it creeps along.

Anyone understand the exemptions Re universities?
Dds friend wants to be with their family for minimum time (not particularly great home life) for minimum period. Then return to uni flat in Scotland. Would this come under travel for Education, even if the education isn’t starting yet?

TheDrsDocMartens · 20/12/2020 11:40

From Tier 2 England to tier 3 Scotland if that’s relevant

This will largely be dependent on the type of flat - a lot of universities aren't allowing return to halls between certain time periods and then staggered return so if she is in hall type accommodation she needs to speak to them directly.

In terms of the travel ban moving home is also exempt which means she can travel for education or moving home capacity. But once she is back at uni she cannot change her mind and travel back as she will count as her own separate household once she moves back. Currently she counts within her parents household.

@ssd

Police were in Glasgow shopping centres asking crowds of mainly youngsters their postcodes today
Most of which probably replied “What’s a postcode”

Unless it’s a feature on SnapTok they’ll probably have no idea about it.

cologne4711 · 20/12/2020 13:05

I'm not sure why they'd care about people leaving Scotland - it makes more sense to be fussy about who's coming into Scotland.

And yes for goodness sake ban non-essential overseas travel. Not that anyone is going to be letting people from the UK in anyway.

Because if from Scotland they then come back after spending x number of days somewhere where cases are higher so risk bringing it back.

Large percentage of the second wave was contributed by people going on summer hols then bringing it back to Scotland is the same for Xmas travel.

Gingerkittykat · 20/12/2020 15:33

@thennek

i may b wrong but i thought u could travel through lower tiers to a final destination tier the same as ur in as long as u didnt stop
You could travel between areas up until a couple of weeks ago when all non essential travel between areas (even the same tier) was banned.

You can travel on Christmas day but no other time now.

It's confusing to keep up with it all!

mumwalk · 20/12/2020 17:16

@scottishskifun You are a breath of fresh air!

Scottishskifun · 20/12/2020 17:39

@mumwalk Xmas Grin thanks my DH does a lot of covid work for LA so I probably know the rules and where to find the information quicker than most!

I don't always agree with all the decisions made but like a large majority of people I realise the more people who break up the rules the more cases the bigger effect on everyone!

mumwalk · 20/12/2020 18:54

@scottishskifun absolutely. I'm fed up listening to people claim their interpretation (which suits their circumstances) of the rules/guidance/law as fact. If you're going to break the law then at least own it. Willful ignorance at it's finest.

Its Halls and currently not with parents but another friend but cant stay for more than a week or so. We have no space otherwise we’d have had them here for Xmas.

Scottishskifun · 20/12/2020 19:48

@TheDrsDocMartens she needs to contact the university directly in that case they should have exemptions for welfare reasons but she needs to speak to them directly rather then turn up to find that she can't be there.
Suggest she does it tomorrow though as nobody will be available between Christmas and New year and very few will be in this week!

TheDrsDocMartens · 21/12/2020 07:30

Thanks, good plan!

Hotpinkangel19 · 21/12/2020 07:40

What happens with Freight? HGV's? Are they allowed in/out of Scotland?
