Worried about DH temp still high after 12 days

HairyFloppins · 19/12/2020 18:31

He’s had symptoms now for 12 days. Had a positive test. Spoke to the GP about day 8 as he has a history of pneumonia and his chest was feeling tight. The GP prescribed doxycycline which he has been taking. He still has quite a nasty cough, is very lethargic and off his food. His temp however rarely drops below 38 and he gets the shakes when it goes above 39.

We have an oximeter which we use all the time and his levels are always fine. Is this just something we need to ride out with Covid or should we be seeking further help.

Thanks

Please contact 111 I think he may need admitting

Howmanysleepsnow · 19/12/2020 18:35

I’d be expecting improvements with doxycycline around now. I’d contact the gp/ ooh again as he may need another antibiotic in addition in case of a resistant secondary infection, or potentially some form of treatment for the covid if he’s really unwell.
He does need to eat as much as he can though, and keep fluid intake up too.

Norah8 · 19/12/2020 18:36

Yes I'd phone for advice.

Mindymomo · 19/12/2020 18:38

Yes, I have seen posts in the thread here for those tested positive that they have continued to have a high temperature after the isolation period has finished. I would ring gp again f no better by Monday, in case he has a chest infection and may need antibiotics to clear it up. Or ring 111 and see what they say.

HairyFloppins · 19/12/2020 18:38

Thanks I was expecting the meds to work by now as well.

He's just drifted off so will see how he is when he wakes up.

111 have called an ambulance for him as his oximeter dropped to 87, just waiting for it to arrive. He is very worried Sad

Hope he is okay op, he is in the best place. My DH was admitted around day 12, was discharged the following day and has recovered since, although it did take weeks. I know it is so worrying - I was the same x

HairyFloppins · 19/12/2020 20:54

Thank you Santa. Glad your DH is ok.

Hate this bloody virus. Don't know what to do with myself now.

indecisivewoman81 · 19/12/2020 20:57

Hopefully he will respond well to the oxygen and steroids and be home soon

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 19/12/2020 21:05

Please try not to worry too much. We are seeing lots of patients like this, and most respond quickly to a bit of oxygen and TLC. And sats of 87% aren't low at all for Covid (though you did totally the right thing to get help) - we are seeing patients tolerate sats much lower than for most other illnesses.

Chances are that he'll be back at home and on the mend very soon Flowers

pinkbalconyrailing · 19/12/2020 21:10

this really is a bastard virus.
I hope your dh gets better soon.
a relative had a high fever for 3 weeks and was on their home cpap machine almost continuously. relative is now almost recovered.

HairyFloppins · 19/12/2020 21:13

Thank you everybody.

Paramedics said the same as you MissLucy.

OrangeBlossom28 · 19/12/2020 21:23

Send you and your husband very best wishes. I was the same when I had Covid recently. Temperature in the 38s for 15 days and Doxycycline after 12 days. Keep us updated.

ChablisandCrisps · 20/12/2020 10:26

I hope your DH is feeling a bit better this morning OP, what a worrying time for you all Flowers

HairyFloppins · 20/12/2020 11:55

Thanks all.

He's doing ok on oxygen and had a bit of breakfast. Just waiting for the doctor to do his rounds.

Feels very surreal.

Best wishes to you both, I’m glad he’s responding well and that’s a really reassuring post from @MissLucyEyelesbarrow ❤️

PrivateIndoorXmas · 20/12/2020 12:03

Aw I am glad he is ok! I needed amoxicillin as well as doxy and steroids so maybe it was just the 'wrong' antibiotic. As others said you did the right thing, but I wouldn't panic. My sats were occasionally that low, though mostly around 90 and I managed to stay at home. He will be much more comfortable now in hospital though and hopefully will get started on the right treatment and be on his way to recovery.

My temp stayed high for about 18 days if I remember rightly, I didn't finish isolation until the 3 week mark anyway so something like that. I was told it is not unusual with covid.

lljkk · 20/12/2020 12:03

X fingers he will stabilise & recover now, OP. Flowers

Sounds like secondary pneumonia. Adam Rutherford (scientist/journalist in his 40s) had similar symptoms and has talked about his experiences online.
