Can we move to Tier 4 before midnight?

Absolutely devastated by the news today. We were meant to spend Christmas with my DPs but they've been moved into Tier 4, or at least will be at midnight.

DH is out of work at the moment, and I WFH, meaning as long as I have my laptop etc I can work anywhere. If we were to go to my DPs before midnight tonight, and so temporarily "move in" with them, would we be OK?

It's just an idea, and my judgement is probably clouded by being desperate to see my DPs. My mental health has taken a battering this year, and DF has early stage dementia, so I'm desperate for him and DD to have a Christmas together before it gets any worse. I know I'm probably being UR so please be gentle.
@PicsInRed as if that scenario would ever happen. Plenty of people will leave today. I'm in London & the vast majority on my street aren't Londoners. Some are packing up now
I just came back from food shopping which is near one of the main roads out of SE London going to M25 - the traffic is absolute chaos heading towards the motorway.
I’m guessing a lot of people will be going now instead of next week.

Ethelswith · 19/12/2020 18:43

It's not illegal.

But Whitty did say very clearly that if he were advising someone in tier 4 with bags packed ready to leave before midnight, his message to them would be to unpack the bags and stay put.

If you are prepared to move in properly, and stay indefinitely, then that's fine - my DBro did this for DMum back in March as she needed support and he is still there.

If 'moving in' means having your Christmas mixing and coming back then please do not do it

flipapoo · 19/12/2020 18:50

@nancy75 Of course they are, literally everyone I work with, live near goes "home" for Christmas. They will be going now, just like they did for lockdown. Lockdown was a joy for parking as the street was empty not that I could go anywhere!

flipapoo · 19/12/2020 18:52

@PicsInRed I am pretty sure if the OP goes now she won't have to stay for a year. We can come back & check?

bigbluebus · 19/12/2020 18:58

Am I missing something? Why is this OK before midnight? Unless the OPs parents live in a Tier 1 area they are not allowed to have her or her family in their house under the current rules never mind after midnight!

Baileysforchristmas · 19/12/2020 19:03

Go and have a lovely Christmas, get packing 👍

Dotinthecity · 19/12/2020 19:05

I’d do it! I hope you’re packing as I type. Happy Christmas 🎄

CovidCarol · 19/12/2020 19:06

Just go, OP Thanks

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 19/12/2020 19:07

@AcornAutumn - tier 4 is basically the same as the national lockdown conditions?

Lemons1571 · 19/12/2020 19:10

If the parents are in tier 3 at the moment, then it’s still illegal to stay overnight with them isn’t it?

PicsInRed · 19/12/2020 19:10

Almost certainly it'll be fine so might be worth a punt. I wouldn't, but I wouldn't have gone to Peru or India in February either. Some gave it a shot - cos "what could go wrong I'll just get a flight home" and that went well.

Yes, that’s what I thought

So why are posters saying she’ll be stuck there for months!

WingingItSince1973 · 19/12/2020 19:15

Let's just ignore the guidelines then and do what we want then keep blaming the government when the virus is worse next month!

JacobReesMogadishu · 19/12/2020 19:17

If everyone does this a lot of people are going to die. Your decisions have consequences. You can not guarantee that you won’t bring the virus back, infect people in your home town, some of whom may die.

Bence69 · 19/12/2020 19:18

I hope you are packing, Boris is an absolute knob & hasn’t got a clue what he is doing. Have a very merry Christmas x

PurpleDaisies · 19/12/2020 19:20

Do you think the top scientists don’t know what they’re doing? I’m seeing one after another saying this action is absolutely necessary.

Don’t make this about Boris. Make this about what is going on with the epidemic right now.

I totally agree he’s a knob but I don’t think that’s any reason to ignore what the scientists who do seem to know what they’re doing more than Boris are saying.
Serenschintte · 19/12/2020 19:24

I would go anyway. It’s not within government remit to police your family life like this. Your mental health is as important as physical health. Go. Spend time with your family. That’s important too.

flipapoo · 19/12/2020 19:26

But the OP is travelling by car is she not? Unlikely she will need a flight home.

flipapoo · 19/12/2020 19:26

I wouldn't travel abroad either, slightly different risk levels imo.

RosesforMama · 19/12/2020 19:26

And this thread is exactly why the new variant will be across the entire country within a month.

Fucks sake.

Delatron · 19/12/2020 19:30

I really think there should be exemptions for people with mental health issues.

I am happy to hunker on down and not see anyone but there’s been lots of threads tonight of people struggling with their mental health. To me this is important to address and you should do what you need to do.

OptedForSome · 19/12/2020 19:31

No you shouldn't bit I really don't know what I'd do in this situation. I've been seeing my parents since about June when my mums dementia took a serious turn for the worst and my dad can't walk - so took on the role of their carer - so will be seeing them christmas day.

Practically everybody's mental health has been fucked up this year. I'm sorry but it's true.
