I had the first dose of the vaccine yesterday evening and wanted to tell someone!

I know that normality is not just around the corner, but today I feel a little bit more hopeful and positive than I have been feeling over recent months. I'm really looking forward to a time where we can all collectively look back on this awful period of time and call it the past rather than the present.

Xmas Smile

Congrats OP, that's fantastic news and makes a huge amount of sense given you'll be working as a vaccinator :)

Thanks for brightening my cold lonely evening!!

My 94 year old nan had hers on Wednesday ☺️ she went to a local town hall in an East London Borough 👍 and my local GP surgery has already jabbed 100s of people 😁

LostInWales · 21/12/2020 22:45

I know the thread has stalled but I am so excited I wanted to join in, I started work as a vaccinator today and as they had a dose left at the end of the day (and they are being super careful about making sure none is wasted as it's so precious) I got the last vaccine of the day. Wasn't expecting it so I am totally made up to have got one. It was the first day for our area but I know there are teams starting to go out to care homes to do residents and we were mostly doing NHS and care home staff today, so happy that it is ramping up and getting out to more people.

SomethingWycked · 21/12/2020 22:53

I hope my 95 year old grandma can get hers soon. She is housebound at the moment so it will mean a home visit. She hasn't heard anything yet but has a medication review beginning January with my Aunt present so I'm hoping she finds out more then. I've only seen her twice this year.
Our neighbours daughter is a surgeon in Kent & she got her first jab last week. It was late on in the day & they were using up doses that would otherwise be wasted. She has asthma so in a risk group.

Ahhh that's brilliant LostInWales! So pleased for you... I really cant wait to get it too (sadly a long wait but still) hopefully once the other vaccines gets rolled out things will start speeding up more xxx

Congratulations Lostinwales!

FatherTedsBankAccount · 21/12/2020 23:17

OP, can I ask if they give you a COVID test before they vaccinate you? My gran is having it tomorrow and, bless her, she is not scared of the needle, but is scared of the swab test! I assume they check you’re not already positive before vaccinating you but I don’t know for sure. Thx. And congratulations!

Vargas · 21/12/2020 23:21

I love hearing about people being vaccinated! Please keep sharing stories.

Frazzled2207 · 21/12/2020 23:24

@LostInWales
That’s fab!

Please keep these coming I need some optimism right now.

I took part in a vaccine trial and really want to know if I had it or not but have to wait for now

LostInWales · 21/12/2020 23:28

@FatherTedsBankAccount Your lovely gran won't be swabbed ahead of the test, there are questions to make sure you are well but no swabbing is done in vaccination centres. We make sure people don't have symptoms but otherwise I've seen a lot of people today who didn't even realise they'd had he jab it's such a fine bore needle.

Thank you to everyone who made such lovely comments, I am so excited to both have the jab and to be helping it become available to everyone else. Every single person who gets the vaccine makes the world a safer place for people who are waiting.

Firefliess · 21/12/2020 23:28

My mum's best friend got hers last week. My mum says she's counting down the 28 days until she goes round and asks her for a hug SmileSmileSmile

Thank you so much! She will be so relieved. Smile

NigellaAwesome · 21/12/2020 23:36

Well done OP and others who have got it. 💉

I have a question though.

If the vaccinators are only just receiving their first doses, that means it will be another 3 - 4 weeks before it is effective. how are they achieving safety in the meantime if they are vaccinating others?

Icequeen01 · 21/12/2020 23:50

My 81 year old mum had her first jab on Saturday. It was really emotional watching a constant line of elderly people being gently guided by NHS staff into a nearby surgery (not our own one). I wasn't allowed to take mum in and was a bit concerned as usually if I tell her to go one way she ends up going the opposite way 🤣 but I needn't have worried she was in brilliant hands and I had a little weep in the car as she went in.

LostInWales · 22/12/2020 00:03

@NigellaAwesome we are masked and wearing visors and practicing good hand hygiene as we would at any other time when in patient contact. It's like any other time during Covid when health professionals were in contact with patients. There's so many people in patient facing roles where we have to be super careful. Otherwise we wouldn't be able to provide the vaccine to so many people. I am incredibly thankful I have had my first dose but will be acting as if I hadn't for the foreseeable future as we ask the people we vaccinator to too.

Rubinia · 22/12/2020 00:03

My 80 year old dad had his on Sunday! I'm really pleased.

Spitoutthebauble · 22/12/2020 00:51

This is a lovely and exciting thread! I won’t be getting it done for several months I imagine, but so pleased to hear of older people and health professionals getting it! Hurrah!

holibobs1 · 22/12/2020 06:38

Got mine booked for today.

Working in high risk areas in a very badly hit hospital.

We were invited to book yesterday and I actually cried with joy 💕
